   There are indeed Billions maybe even Trillions worth of Marcos Wealth… but was it actually stolen wealth or UNEXPLAINED WEALTH?!… THere is a huge difference… and question is if it is indeed stolen… STOLEN FROM WHO?!… Stolen from our Government Coffers?! HOw is that possible if that amount of Govt BUDGET never existed from the beginning until the end of the MArcos regime?! Even the TOTAL debt incured in those 2 decades did not even come close to a parcel of those estimated funds…. SO WHERE DID THOSE NUMBERS COME FROM????… If you could explain to me where that UNEXPLAINED WEALTH that you claim as “STOLEN” came from then maybe I would be as quick to label FEM as the biggest Thief in History.

     Philippine foreign debt in 1970 was just $2.19 billion. By 1986, foreign had increased exponentially to to more than 14 times — to $28.2 billion. And the Philippines is still paying this debt to this day.

     This does not include the billions of dollars of U.S aid the Philippines received during that 16-year period. Had these billions of dollars been invested properly as it should have back into the Philippine economy and infrastructure, it would have generated trillions of dollars of economic return over 2 decades.

     And guess who got stuck paying this foreign debt, and still paying it today? Yeah, right.

       The late dictator is number 2 on Transparency International’s MOST CORRUPT leaders in modern times. And because we Filipinos have such a high tolerance for corruption, we are (embarrassingly) the only country in the world with 2 leaders on that list (look up #10–Estrada).

       The estimated amount of government money pocketed by the dictator is around US$5 to 10 billion dollars. Yes, I understand the rest of the funds haven’t been traced, or, perhaps, nahiya young dictator and he actually inhibited himself from pocketing more.

       However, we do know that US$475 million of Marcos deposits were identified in Swiss bank accounts in 1995. A Swiss court transferred the Marcos money to the PNB in 1999, where it was held in escrow while our courts were deliberating on its ownership.

       These funds were finally turned over to the Philippine government in July 2003 (during the Arroyo administration) when our Supreme Court finally awarded the deposits (by then around $658 million) to the government, as the Marcos family FAILED to prove that the deposits were lawfully acquired. The SC vote to award the money to the government was 12 to 0, with 1 abstention.

       $658 million divided by 20 years (the number of years the dictator was in power) = $32.9 million a year. The dictator gave himself a bonus of almost US$33 million a year while he was in power. $33 million = P1,650,000,000. Essentially he gave himself a bonus of around P1.6 billion for every year he occupied Malacanang.

       So, yes, I understand that the late dictator did leave behind a legacy of public infrastructure projects that benefited the country (and also his family and his cronies). And I understand that this constitutes so much of his appeal (hell, he was in power for 20 years, he was bound to get some things right). But did he really deserve that bonus?

       For me, big no.

       A middle finger to ALL the traditional political dynasties who almost always only serve their interests (Marcos promised a New Society … except his New Society resembled the old society except this time it was his cronies / oligarchs who benefitted from government business).

       For me, the leadership of the future should come from the middle classes. I can’t wait for Vico to become old enough to run.
