  1. @Jed & 4m

It is indeed expensive.. It’s the “golden south east asia pearl”AKA “pearl of the Orient”.. Aside from it’s name, I guess it’s used because it is the most expensive pearl originaly endemic to the Philippines…

I agree, that this would have worked better if it was set on a gold frame instead of silver… and the motif is sunrays that represent the sun on our flag or golden ibong Adarna (inspired by the Asian phoenix)feathers… Instead of a silver tree w/ leaves that I don’t know the historical symbolism or even it’s significance. Maybe it’s laurel? Which is very Roman Empire?

FYI, the Sun on our flag is actually the most important figure in our flag…. Not only does it represent the 8 provinces who revolted against our colonizers… The 8 rayed sun actually represented our precolonial empires.. The pre-colonial kings of our islands had the title “haring araw” or the “sun king”… the term “Hari or Har(i)” itself (Sanskrit: हरि, IAST: Hari or Har) is a name for the supreme absolute in the Vedas and Guru Granth Sahib. Hari refers to God who takes away all the sorrows of his devotees. It is derived from the Proto-Indo-European root “*ǵʰel- to shine; to flourish; green; yellow” which also gave rise to the Persian terms zar ‘gold’, Greek khloros ‘green’, Slavic zelen ‘green’ and zolto ‘gold’, as well as the English words yellow and gold. The same root occurs in other Sanskrit words like haridrā, ‘turmeric’, named for its yellow color.

Although we had silver… Gold was more prominent… it was only during the time the Chinese emperor wanted more silver due to it’s scarcity in China that the Spaniards took it as an opportunity to bring their silver mined in Mexico to unfairly trade it with the Gold of our natives… Our colonizers swindled our natives by bartering one tiny silver peseta in exchange for 2 “tìpak” or 2 “handfulls” of our gold. And this crown definitely represents that kind of ignorance. 🙄

Well, after reading polarizing comments on facebook… It definitely reminds us of the division created and perpetuated by our Colonizers and the Catholic Church- which ironicaly is the remnant business institution of the Roman Empire.

    • Very well-researched and -said, C2F. I couldn’t agree more. Tama ka na dapat it should be a gold base and not silver, tapos i-accentuate na lang ng ruby and sapphire stones in each column surrounding the crown.

      That’s all.

  2. The crown is good but DO NOT invalidate those who don’t see it as that beautiful. DO NOT expect ala Catriona level of praises because di deserve talaga ng koronang eto. A for effort but pang Top 10/20 lang ang koronang eto if this is an MU competition.

  3. Andami niyong kuda sa crown when it’s actually perfectly fine; somebody even suggested cutting circular-cut gemstones in half (gahhhh) because the pear shaped sapphire and ruby ‘looked weird’. Like, are you insane?? lol. Keep your photo-shop suggestions to yourself and let the real jewellers/craftsmen do their job.

But nobody thought of pointing out how garbled, how unidiomatic, incoherent, unconnected and banal, the rationale was in conceptualising the crown.

Achievement of one’s mind over body as a Filipina?? (is she paraplegic? Physically disabled??)
Elements that show triumph (What elements? And to triumph over what??)
It is a dream that inhabits a phenomenal woman’s mind, heart and spirit (Dream of what? Is she possessed? lol)
Leaves, symbolise women who seek success (In what mythology or social-cultural context do leaves symbolise women seeking success??? LOL)
Diamonds sparkle the lives of people she encounters (Unidiomatic to use sparkle as a verb)
Pearls optimism and fear of God (another made-up symbolical attribute)

Naubusan ba ng budget to hire a proper writer/copywriter?

    • @ Frankie Deleo If it is any consolation (to you), Siera & Leighton Berchell share your sentiments. 🙂

    • @Frankie

If you have low standards then it’s perfectly fine…

Natawa din ako sa meaning… Fear of God?! Doesn’t represent everyone… hahaha

      • I know that as pageant fans of the 1st order, we have high expectations, but for me the crown and the national costume have no bearing at all on a candidates chances of getting THE OTHER CROWN- the truly important one.

As crowns go, the organisers may decide to get a new one anyway down the line.

  4. The crown looks good but not better!

For a crown worth 100k USD eh puede na rin dahil segurado ko na hindi ito personal property ng Empire production. I’m sure Villarica just loaned this crown for MUP just like the previous crown of Miss Universe from a Czech company!

    About the crown,

The blue sapphire and red ruby symbolizes the crown while the three yellow citrine symbolizes Luzviminda! The pearls of course, we are known as “Pearl of the Orient Sea” and if it is authentic from the South Sea Pearl of Palawan, nasa 5k – 7k per piece and precio niyan dahil mahirap i-harvest much more to produce a gold pearl!

The crown can still be modified, yung tinatapakan ng last two pearls on both side, puede nila tapyasin to lower down the pearl alignment para hindi mag mukhang balde! If that happens, ang ganda niyan kahit sa malayuan lalo pa’t naka-chignon hair style nung ko-coronahan!

Ang branding kasi ng Villarica is as pawnshop along with Cebuana Lhuiller and Tambunting kaya association with the crown connotes a negative one! Could have been loaned by the Panlilio’s, maiiba ang impact!

  5. not an expert here. But one thing for sure we can all agree is that the crown looks expensive kahit d mo pa alam ang presyo and beautifull. nagkakaiba lang tayo the way things put on the crown. example is the 3 pearls at the bottom is unnecessary for others which is for me i agree too. had they didnt put the pearl below then i think majority will not criticize the crown at kahit papano ma aappreciate talaga and more approved. second is ung shape ng red and blue and ung place nya. i dont know where to put them exactly and what shape. but my idea is to put them below sa taas ng pearl at the bottom my butas na malaking space doon. don ko like ilagay nila i fill nila ng red and blue ung space don sa baba na nasa taas ng 3 pearl sa baba. at alisin ang 3 pearl sa baba. thats for me. we all have different imagination and different taste.

      🙂

      • i dont know twist grip @flor. but i assume you are talking about the shape i want to the sapphire and ruby if placed below. the leaves of mikimoto isnt it? By the way. have u seen the leak mup stage? theres a leds in the flor and the background led looks like mu2015 stage pero hinde ganon kataas ung mup.

      • @jed, the twist grip design is incorporated in the tiaras of the runners up at Miss International. If you watch the crowning, the reigning runners up attach the tiaras to the new runners up by twisting it unto their hairs, thereby removing the need to put hairpins to keep the tiaras in place.

@Flor this is what you’re referring to, right?

      • @ unorthodox Yes! That’s what I was referring to. Domo arigatou gozaimashita!

@ jed Yes! I saw a photo somewhere… I don’t recall exactly where… na during rehearsal, parts of the BCC Ballroom carpet were outlined with tape, to denote “LED”…. As far as stage is concerned, I just ask/hope for a HIGH CEILING.

A high ceiling will create the illusion of big space in a small floor area. It represents HEAVEN. 🙂

    • @Jed & 4m

  6. by “sponsor”, does it mean made for “free” or at a discounted price? Anyways, Villarica should still be commended for sponsoring the crown that the new MUP winner will wear.. i am not a jeweller, nor an artist, but i find this crown okay.. and even if other commenters say it’s too “tall”, we’ll only know when the winner wears it, eh paano kung bagay naman pala sa ulo at balanse tingnan.. and just a thought, could another reason for the “bashing” be that in some commenters’ subconscious, Villarica ( a local brand associated with the “sanglaan”) made the crown, and not Mouwad (for MUT) nor Jewelmer? We may all disagree about the artistic merits of this crown, but fact is, it still costs at least P5 M, and we pageant fans should be thankful for the generosity..

    • @ Andy ‘Ay, nakoh…

      🙂

      • @ Flor Tula .. LOL!! Be that as it may, Villarica pa rin ang willing mag sponsor at “sumugal”..

  7. You know what would have made this super creative- had they used anahaw as the shape and structure of the crown. with the pearl details…. just my two cents…

    • That would have been really creative and a much more impressive artistic interpretation of Philippines (instead of using the flag colors). But the risk is that the anahaw shaped crown would look similar to the Mikimoto Universe crown

      • That’s OK as long as we have explanation for it..I hope they do a crown design contest in the future…. hihihih and have Villarica execute the idea.

    • I agree with Anahaw…. or incombination with the rays of the sun in our flag… Which could be a perfect match for Catriona’s earcuff….

  8. Have you seen the voting in Lazada?

    • Biliran is the only one who can catch up with Michele Gumabao in the voting. I hope she gets one final push to make it

    • @ kevinkevins That’s the way!

In the final stretch of the race, you will need to make a choice – who to leave behind for good and whom to throw your support behind 100%. This is when you start being realistic.

Skelly is probably benefiting from a “solid Leyte/Waray” voting bloc. That’s the cities of Tacloban and Ormoc combined, at the very least… We have no reason not to encourage her. She is beautiful in her own way. 🙂

The Popular Vote will translate to future monetary opportunities for whomever puts in the most.

In contrast, I imagine the Cebu bloc is three-way divided. They will soon have to choose…

  9. IT looks nice, but what matters Really is the cost. How lucky is the winner. But then again, “ IT is not the crown That makes a Queen but IT is the Queen That makes the crown

I love buying golds and diamonds so I assume villarica will use gold or platinum and real precious stones then diamonds.
Salamat sa pagpapahalaga sa pipiliin representative Ng ating bansa Villarica

  11. Personally, I am not feeling it. I mean the intention and symbolizing is good but the execution hindi. For example, kung -re-do ko sya…I would play around with ruby and that blue gems. Hindi ko sya literal na gagawing flag but convery in a more creative way. Parang MW crown ang iconic. This is not bashing the crown, ang ganda ng intention sana nagpa contest na lang sila. Sana mag grow sa puso ko yung crown pero on the onset hindi ko sya feel ang rating ko sa kanya – mapagpanggap! sorry

    • @ Garga Yup. The flag reference was literal. Kaya ang dating, kulang sa creativity at necessary element otherwise foreigners would have now way of knowing it was “Filipina”.

But I agree, this can eventually win over skeptics. There is nothing to prevent the creators to tweak-refine in the years to come without taking any element out. This is just the beginning.

I can appreciate the silver setting for the diamonds. I initially said gold was mandatory for a proper “Filipina” crown. But I had no gems in mind when I said that… Had this been all-gold, it would have been garish-disastrous. Btw, the blue gem is sapphire.

  12. It’s T-A-L-L kasi if it’s “pungok” (stunted), it will look more like a princess’ tiara. Even the “Power of Authenticity” was tall. By contrast, the “Canary” looks modest. But perhaps THAT’s the whole point! Let the comers-pretenders wear BIG crowns. True kweens can get by even with a tiara. 🙂

The gold pearls look faux. Natural, even cultured, pearls of such color have lower value, I think, than the old-school “pearly-white”, the color of moonlight that provokes spawning out at sea.

Because of the two gems at the apex, I am reminded of the ornate gate of The Mansion. Those of us who have seen it up close will understand… This would have been a fitting crown as a token of the City of Pines to the inaugural MUP they hosted. But in general, I’m OK with it. Carry on!

  13. I think the other crown posted earlier here like “waling-waling, sampaguita & pearl combo” is way way better than this one. It may not be costly but looks more elegant than this basket-look-alike crown.

  14. I think the crown is too tall. Parang mga old crowns sa BbP. It is better sana if the blue and red stones ay nilagay sa bandang gitna dun sa branch na may dalawang stem. Sorry I am not an expert, this only my opinion.

  15. Looks good to me
Again , I find it irrelevant .. what crown the winner wears
It’s the quality of the winner that matters the most
If we can get another Pia or Cat among the 50 candidates , she doesn’t even have to wear a mask crown
But the crown really appeals to me

  17. Haàays…

    Sabihin ko na nga…
it violates several laws of Aesthetics..

    1. Symetry… the 2 different colored gem makes the whole thing asymetrical.

    2. Color… I see 1 major color: silver…. and 3 accent colors that are not evenly spread-out- gold, red, blue…

    3. Rule of thirds… yup… it didn’t follow that…

    4. Golden proportion/ratio/spiral….. there is obviously little to none..

    5. Grouping… There is little of that…

    6. Contrast…. there is definitely a contrast… and not a good one..

    7. Peak shift principle… if you remove the jewels… from afar, it does indeed look like the old bbp-supra crown… do we have fond memories of that old crown?… No!

I could go on further but….its pointless… I doubt if they would replace this crown that is worth 5Mpesos… I don’t blame anyone for not apreciating this because I do understand we have been shown several crowns from different international pageants on this blog and I have seen you all show apreciation by giving credit where credit is due… Pag maganda e maganda talaga… as for this crown… 😬🙄😒🤐

  18. I agree with most of the comments that the big blue and red stones seemed a bit off. theres a tendency for that part to overpower the design and not see the entire crown as one. yung sa kanya ka na lang mapapatingin rather than the crown itself. when i try to cover it, mukhang mas mapayapa sa aking paningin. i was also trying to imagine na nasa the lower middle section baka sakali instead n nasa tuktok. so parang syang element sa design n pedeng meron pedeng ding wala. I also agree n baka kung mas maliit n blue and red stones like making them look like rays of sun instead of two big ones baka magblend smoothly in the design. siguro for me kapag subtle yung atake sa design mas exciting kesa supergiven. in this case parang ganun yung nafeel ko na, ahh flag ng pinas. oki. parang ganun. i love the pearls, especially the color. 🙂

  19. mas maganda pa mga crowns sa divisoria
    suot sa barangay and santacruzan

ito eh ginaya nila sa miss q&a g showtime

    • They are trying to be symbolic about the Philippines but the execution os very cliche, parang project lang ng high school students sa section 1 ang design .

  20. It looks good.. until the gems were jammed in the middle. Parang tinamad ang designer. It distracted an otherwise elegant crown.

  21. The only weird part for me about the design is the shape of the sapphire and the ruby. Together, mukha silang pwet honestly. If ginawa na lang nilang bilog yung shape, or kung tinangal na lang nila yang red at blue stones altogether baka mas maayos pa yung naging itsura

  22. Very acceptable crown. I think the blue and red stones would have been cut differently but I like the gold pearls.

    Kudos!

  24. Hmmm, okay, so I’ve been someone who has rooted for Jonas & his team (& I still root for the success of the new MUP, as it were).

I know Mama J is not perfect as a pageant coach. I think he botched Catriona’s chances at World, for instance, by molding her presentation too closely to Megan Young’s. However, we all know that failure resulted in our 4th Universe crown, which I personally value more than a 2nd World crown.

So I’ve taken on Mama J’s haters–those who bash him for daring to be more than just a pageant coach by disrupting the beauty pageant infrastructure in the Philippines & taking over the local Universe franchise. I have defended Jonas (not that he needs it) & have always tried to give him & his team the benefit of the doubt & the space to improve on their efforts.

Having said that, I actually prefer the tiara posted on this board the other day versus this crown. I love the context in which this crown was made, the fact that the company that designed it is an all-women team. This certainly plays into the women empowerment drive of the new MUP organization. I also love the symbolism in the design & choices of precious stones used. However, the design itself is not exactly pleasing to my eyes & taste.

I guess it’s just a personal thing, this is my initial gut reaction, and maybe in time I’ll grow to like the crown. Let’s just say for now that it is not love at first sight.

  25. parang nasobrahan sa pearls…pero yun nga, nagawa na so be grateful na lang.

  26. Whokey… at least theres a lot of intrinsic value w/c is way better than BBP crowns I guess… Be greatfull as Catriona says.

Haha!

I find it too tall sa head ng winner. In short, it does not stand proportion. Though it looks expensive, the position of the south sea pearls do not accentuate better the color of the stones. I admit that I am not a jewelry designer (so please do not debate with me), but I can see if it is beautiful or not. And, unfortunately, it is not beautiful.

If crown designers want to come up with a beautiful one, they may Google and see how the crowns or tiaras of Queen Elizabeth are done.

    That’s all.

      • We are only speaking about what we feel is true based on our observation. Pero, kagaya ng nasabi mo sa itaas, we have to be grateful.

        That’s all.
