  1. The first ever beauty pageant was in the Bible, when Esther became the rightful queen chosen by the king thru a pageant.

  2. I thought the first beauty contest happened between goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite.
The price then was the “apple of discord”. Though it was awarded not because Aphrodite was the most beautiful (all are equally beautiful that even Zeus can’t decide) but because she offered the best offer to the judge (Paris). This is the reason winners should be of goddess level pulchritude.
Of course this is from a myth:

Back to reality. A Singaporean colleague asked me why Pinoys are so obsessed with beucons. I told him even before MU, MW etc were conceived, we Pinoys already have Carnival Queens.

    • Oh Johnny,

That’s a good point. But in fairness to Norman, we are talking about recorded history. The stories of Hera, Athena and Aphrodite are mythical and not considered factual or historical. It’s like the story of Maria Makiling or Poison Ivy.

  3. Hi Norman,

Let me just correct you here: the first known beauty pageant, by Biblical accounts, is well documented in the Book of Esther.

The book of Esther has become famous for two reasons. Although the record is included in the canon of Holy Scripture, God was never mentioned by Mordecai, the author. Reasons for the omission are debatable, for there were many occasions when the writer could easily have referred to the Almighty. Throughout the history of the Hebrew nation God’s protecting hand was never more evident than in the deliverance wrought through the ingenuity and courage of a Hebrew girl. Secondly, the book is unique in that, as far as is known, it describes the first beauty pageant in history. This is to be known as The Miss Persia Pageant (Esther 2:8-15).

Now, after China, Vietnam and even Myanmar has opened itself to the world, we now have more evidence of documented history that dates thousand of years Before Christ (BC), way earlier than our previously known recorded history. These includes accounts of women being known for their beauty and brains… and activities that seems like a beauty competition where the winner becomes a queen not just for a year but for life. So even the Book Of Esther seems like a younger version.

    • @Jay, I’m glad you wrote the Biblical account of the first beauty contest ever. The story of Esther took place during the reign of King Xerxes I of Persia (486-465 B.C.), more than 100 years after the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish nation under Nebuchadnezzar. King Xerxes was displeased with his wife and sought her replacement. He decreed to find a new queen via an elaborate beauty contest of all the kingdom’s beautiful maidens. From all over the 127 provinces, beautiful women are brought to the palace for the king to select his new queen. The reps from the various “APs” included Esther, an orphan and a concealed Jewish exile to the Persian capital city. After a 12 month “pre-pageant”, where the “finalists” were perfumed with myrrh and allocated certain foods and servants, Esther is adjudged the fairest of them all. She became the queen.

      • It was only later in this thriller that Esther revealed her real ethnic origins. This is a powerful story of redemption and freedom from oppressive exile similar to the Exodus, a narrative of someone who, due to gender, culture, and circumstance, was powerless and invisible, but was transformed by God to be a pivotal, formidable heroine.

  4. Sir Boss, three things come to mind when I think of (btw, resort looks DREAMY)…..

    1) Unahan sa pag-reserve sa right to use “International Pageant of Pulchritude” among your pageant organization-wanna-be friends! Advise them to apply for no less than a 25-years. Either The Camp or Korona, maybe? Puwede rin ‘yung isa’ng nag-reserve sa “Miss Young International”, para “sibling/sister pageant brands” ang dating. 🙂

    2) We hope to eventually see a MrTB alum go on to (senior-level) Nationals! Their age is exactly when the benefits of carefully-supervised gym + diet are best realized. By 19-25, men are at their physical prime. Hanapan niyo po ng sponsor/s! Naalala ko tuloy ‘yung isa’ng nag-compete dati sa Hannah’s Ecotourism (the 2018 batch won by Nicole Minano & George Reylor de Lumen) – a sixteen (16) year-old-already-BORTA and MUY LINDO. Whatever became of him, po? I don’t believe he placed…. And what’s Prince Argel Saycon up to now?

    3) Continuing from #2, both Chiara and Gab are Leytena, no? Can they eventually serve on the MrTB Board oif Judges?

    • You must be referring to Kyle Dwight Sabina of Cebu. He is continuing his studies before COVID19 struck. Argel, on the other hand, is preparing for his first ABSCBN teleserye with sexy actress Ivana Alawi.

  5. I lived in Galveston . Didn’t know about that part of her history . I wish I knew

    • Galveston is a crushing port .
I wish I had known that too before I left the island city .
