The Mr World 2019 candidates were given a rousing welcome at the Novotel Manila Araneta Center (Official Residence) earlier in the afternoon today. Actually, around half of the expected 88 have already checked-in, with the rest arriving tonight and tomorrow to complete the roster for Thursday’s Press Presentation.
Mr Philippines JB Saliba – looking stylish and spiffy in a Barong Tagalog – was on hand to welcome his new brothers. The atmosphere was very festive as loud banging of rhythmic drums filled the hotel’s lobby.
Between now and August 22, the candidates will have their hands full with different activities and fast-track challenges leading to the finals on August 23 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Based on these pics of candidates alone, our very own JB Saliba has a very competitive chance of snagging the crown on merits alone. He embodies both form and substance – a far cry from the mostly fluff Sam Ajdani and John Spainhour. And let us not put so much premium on the height factor. Mister World 2012 gave us Canadian Frankie Cena who at 5’5” was the shortest man ever to compete at the pageant and yet emerged as among the Top 10 overall. He then ended up hosting Mister World 2014 as well as Miss World 2017 and 2018. And who knows the extent to which Julia Morley recompenses the host country – not that JB needs it in the first place.
