Pilipinas where the level of contention among the candidates is as sharp as the cutting edge of a high-carbon steel Japanese-style chef’s knife, there is a big difference between being summoned to centerstage for the first elimination during the Grand Coronation Night. It is at this point where the ladies with official placements are separated from those relegated to just stay in the background for the remaining hours of the competition.
In this year’s edition of Bb. Pilipinas, your blogger followed the format used last year where the Top 25 signalled the start of the filtration process. It also gives a relatively wider breathing space in that more deserving candidates are recognized for their hard-earned efforts in standing out and being counted as among the stronger ones.

Believe it or not, it breaks my heart to have no spot/s left for any of the remaining fifteen. But in the true spirit of pageant analysis, it needs to be done so we can move forward and zero in further on the more deserving fighters. This despite the fact that the afterglow of making it to Top 25 is relatively short-lived as the next cut to 15 beckons shortly after the swimsuit and/or evening gown competition.
Now if a People’s Choice Award winner is automatically selected as part of the Top 15, then I would go out on a limb by stating that #Binibini20 Catriona Gray is very likely to get the honor of being guaranteed a spot. Her fan base is undeniably strong, just like the time of MJ Lastimosa where crowd cheers/popularity is only part and parcel of the support. Text and online votes provide just as much proof of the same.

A lot of the still-standing Binibinis in my Top 15 are expected to deliver at this point. Based on previous performances in another national pageant alone, #Binibini20 Catriona Gray (Miss World Philippines 2016) has already proven herself well-equipped the minute she starts holding the microphone and dishing out an answer to the question that will be asked of her.
During last Sunday night’s “The Road to the Crown” TV Special on ABS-CBN as well, there were those who showed how good they are in expressing themselves more spontaneously during the speaking test where they were tasked to enter a room and pick a photo or item that represents their aspirations and motivations.
But the Final Q&A could be an entirely different playing field. I reckon that there will have already been installed favorites at this juncture. And if my combination of gut-feel and observations is to be relied upon, the following eight could be headed for victorious punctuations to their Bb. Pilipinas dreams, provided that they don’t falter big-time during this part:

I believe it is because of a certain candidate who we’ve been hoping to join and eventually did, this year pa. It’s like a dream come true for true blue pageant fans. Imagine kung hindi sya kasali this year, Binibining Pilipinas will be just an ordinary year , just like last year na walang masyadong ganap. Add to that, there are so many universally appealing girls who are loaded with potential this year, like Ahtisa, Muriel, Wynonah, Sandra, Anjame, Kayesha, Sigrid, Agatha, etc. I am hoping that next year or 2 years from now they will come back again if ever they will not get a crown this year. And the controversy, of course. This year, parang lumalabas, its Catriona vs Aya vs Michelle, a three way competition for the MUP crown. Plus, the drama regarding the redemption of Cat after that Miss World hullabaloo.

While the others are competing in a local pageant, Cat’s game is pang-international levels already. She’s in a class of her own. After all, she is, as what they call Miss U contenders, a certified National Delegate.

My personal preference for MUO is Wynonah Buot, and I hope and pray she will pull a pleasant surprise come finals night.
However, if the choice is between Catriona and Michele, we have to look at each contender’s winnability from WME/IMG’s business point of view.
MUO is on a brand-building mode. The new owners, WME/IMG is well entrenched into the business of events marketing, so it is a given that they know branding from inside out, and they know the market they are trying to reach out to. Inevitably, MU has now transformed into an annual search for an image model for its “confidently beautiful” message to its global audiences. Predictably, MU’s selection process of its image model could be very stringent this time— (1) considering human demographic characteristics (age, race and geographic origin), lifestyle characteristics (activities, interest, advocacy and opinion), and personality traits (extroversion, agreeableness, dependability, warmth, concern, and sentimentality), and (2) transcending outstanding physical and cerebral qualities to include all other augmenting attributes and circumstances surrounding the candidate’s personal brand, yes including the demeanor of her supporters, past and present.

I see Tito Norms may be making an allowance for “last time” participants Orais (age out after this year) and Huelar (3rd and final attempt?). I just don’t see the oomph in these ladies, especially in Huelar for Grand International when that pageant celebrates over the top Latina glambot antics. Orais is okay, but given she is 26 and has travelled the world you’d think her presentation would be more impactful. Even Manalo at her naïve young age of 19 (I think?) comes across more ready for representing the Philippines globally. I also see why Patalinjug may be given a runner-up position as she has time on her side. She’s come on very strong though. Lemonon also can’t be ignored, she has such a carefree yet assured quality about her – while some of the hungry girls may crack under the pressure. Rushton also can’t be ignored because of her connections.
Honestly, I’m wanting coronation night to be over. There is only one logical choice for MUP and all this side-drama has just taken all the energy out of this competition. Even the other delegates have been at like 70% throttle as I’m sure they know there is a single logical choice too and all this drama has taken from their experience.
Kudos to Guimabao for being a breath of fresh air this year, even if her dogs shouldn’t get a treat. Perhaps they know even in this Year of the Dog…

Brave predictions. I am crossing my fingers all will bode well for the girls whom I believe will be the best reps for the Philippines in the international pageant season this 2018, namely, Michelle, Eva, Karen G. , Jehza ( please don’t waste her potential ) & Wynonah.
Ahtisa , Anjame, Muriel, Vicky, Kayesha & Sophia should be given a few more years before they are sent to international pageants, like what they did to Pia. I still find them raw & underdeveloped as beauty queens. Let them live their lives and finish their studies or attend to their careers first, and come back more mature, wiser , confident and more well rounded as women of substance. I put those girls I mentioned as the girls who will be the next big thing, in the same league as Daisha Jimenez, Apriel Smith, Gazini Ganados, The Aberasturi sisters, Julia Gonowon, Cynthia Tomalla & Samantha Lo.
Sigrid, Patrik, Samantha, Ena, Edjielyn & Agatha are the dark horses of this season, same as Elizabeth Clenci last year. I have a feeling they will pull a surprise in the finals.
Aya, no matter what crown she clinches, will be criticized for having the family connections instead of recognizing her own merits. Being a daughter of a Miss Universe 3rd Runner Up is a curse, in her case.
I see no other candidate formidable enough to sent shock waves in this edition of Miss Universe other than Catriona Gray. Controversial, talked and buzzed about in the pageant community, a classical beauty and strong weapons in her arsenal as a beauty queen , and broad, mass appeal to the pageant fans, she has all the elements necessary to be a future Miss Universe, and to be included in the short list of IMG as the front runners for the crown this year.
Kayesha is already a college graduate. I think she’s not raw. If she performs well on pageant night, I’d like to see her win a crown.

Something tells me that there is more to this than meets the eye. I agree with the top 2. Michele and Catriona are going to be the top 2 but it pains me to see Michele in MI not because she doesn’t deserve it but it would be an uphill battle for her to fit in the MI mold. She’s better off in MGI and Jehza in MI. I don’t think that the crowns matter really but just making sure that we send the girls who have qualities of what these organizations are looking for.
I still say that we are possibly in for a big surprise on Sunday.

However, let’s look into it closely, technically speaking:
1. Q&A’s scores are increased to ~30% from 10% starting BBP 2017. Meaning, Q&A plays a vital role especially in the crown placements. SMA learned her lesson in MU 2016.
*Maxine won in 2016 despite faltering during Q&A, because her SS and EG scores compensated for her total score. Nonetheless, it was never enough to let her through the top 3 in MU.
2. There are no BBP titleholders in recent years standing 5’5″-5’6″. You have to be exemplary in the pageant night performance to secure a crown. Meron man, sobrang rare.
*Elizabeth Clenci was the first in 8 years to win a crown, standing only 5’6″.
3. Since 2012, MUP is either a repeater, or a crossover. In short, pageant experience is imperative.
*Janine – BBP 2011, BBP 2012
*Ara – MEP 2012, BBP 2013
*MJ – BBP 2011, BBP 2012, BBP 2014
*Pia – BBP 2013, BBP 2014, BBP 2015
*Maxine – BBP 2012* (disqualified), BBP 2016

4. Age is a deal breaker. However, that doesn’t mean that girls beyond a certain age cap will be switched to a higher crown due to international pageant qualification/disqualification. Top scorers are MUP. They are well justified.
*Kylie vs. Maxine (’16) – Maxine outscored Kylie on both SS and EG. Though Kylie, gave a good answer, it was only 10% at that time and it was just enough to take over Jennifer H. and Joanna E.
*Janicel vs. Pia (’15) – Pia was just few points behind Janicel. So at the time when Q&A is at play. she took advantage of it and gave a solid answer. She won by a hair.
5. Take note of this. Best in Swimsuit and Best in Evening Gown seals the deal. Whoever wins these two special awards are BBP Queens already. No doubt. It’s just a matter of crown assignment.
Unpredictable ang finals. Pero if these predictions, especially the top 3 crowns, would materialize come March 18, it’s the most clear cut, distinct, black and white edition of BBP to date. And I’m happy with that. Based on my observations and preference…

Janicel vs. Pia in 2015, I think Janicel wins over Pia, it just so happened Pia who is already 26 that time is no longer eligible for MI. Buti na lang at nagkaganon naging MUP si Pia.
Possible, but Janicel failed miserably on the Q&A part.
FYI, Pia was 25 when she won, she could have been placed in MI but she wasn’t, meaning, she scored higher.
It’s curious that you chose to start with 2012. In 2011, the top winner was Shamcey, who was a pageant newbie.

I think placing Jehza as MGI is a consolation in itself. We all know she’s lost her luster throughout the competition although we never know what happens in the finals night. Aya is fit for other crowns except Universe. Michelle? Too strong for MI. She’s the one for MGI. Based on Tito N’s predictions, I can form mine as follows:
MU – Catriona (no-brainer. We can’t afford to lose a 4th Miss Universe in her. That’s all.)
MI – Karen (she’s a traveler and for sure she’s been immersed to a lot of cultures so MI is perfect for her not to mention her gorgeous looks)
MS – Aya (with her industry experience in modelling, this girl can certainly rock Europe. I really don’t see any problem with Aya not winning a crown (except Universe of course). To all pageant warriors, please just pomote who you love instaed of bashing who/what you hate. Aya, after all, is worthy of a crown.)
MGI – Michelle (I am seeing a Nicole Cordoves 2.0 in the way she communicates though she is a shoo-in for other minor crowns except Globe)
MIC – Jehza (give this to her now. We can’t afford to send a strong candidate like Eva, Wynonah or MJ to this “puchu-puchu” pageant when we really have no idea what their organization is looking for in a winner. Every year, we have been sending the best ladies yet they still can’t bring the crown. I think Jehza is the perfect lady here.)
