    • i don’t think so.. i really feel rachel nailed the prelims, but since she’s also obviously among the leading the wildcard, they just put her there and chose other candidates instead.

      “my conspiracy, my theory, allegedly”

  1. Congratulations Ms South Africa. You may not be the most beautiful, the tallest or the smartest but you are the most consistent and most confident. To Rachel, thank you for giving it your best. You fought very well but perhaps the MU crown is simply not your destiny. Most of us are very very proud of you. I wish you all the best for your future.

Now on the matter of the final 3, I beg to disagree about jamaica being robbed this year. She had the best speaking voice yes but her content and delivery was the least coherent and impactful among the 3 of them. She pointed out drive or determination as her quality and justified that with her foundation but the linking came out forced. In so doing the fluidity of her answer was disrupted. Colombia chose being passionate fpr her outstanding quality and she was indeed very passionate with her delivery, her choice of words very universal and so her answer came out as sincere and relatable. As for S.Africa, the audience and the judges already knew her backstory very well so when she subtly hinted on it and connected it to her being fearless while speaking with full conviction and seamless delivery she had the crown in the bag.

    • She’s considered the face of this batch of Miss Universe, wyd. The photo attached above was simply a bad one, she looks haggard and her eyes are red, probably from crying because she won.

  2. the mikimoto crown has such an interesting design
    very unique
but how come it looks more like a shield or even a hat than a crown
    when put on somebody’s head?

    • That’s how unique the Mikimoto crown. you can really distinguish it from the others. I mean may sarili siyang buhay at identity. it’s a phoenix rising..

      • thanks, @MrManila
i had no idea about it being a phoenix rising motif
i’ve always thought they were stylized peacock feathers
i am looking at it differently now

  3. Let’s admit it: this year’s MU crown went to someone with a solid relatable personal brand. In a field of very beautiful women from all over the world, the one rose above the clutter is the one with a good back story to tell about her brand essence. What can be more powerful than a story of being held at gunpoint after crowning and lived to advocate self-defense! Admirable inner strength and unrelenting drive—these seem to be are the traits the MUO ascribe to the marketing tag “confidently beautiful”.

While the fans seriously agonize over evening gowns, swimsuit, pasarela, vital statistics, height, styling, language skills, MUO fusses more on personality which is discerned through interview (60% of total score on the semi-final round). Personality is largely defined by one’s values and character, attributes that are easily seen in the advocacy embraced by a candidate.

Lesson learned: Beauty is not a one-dimensional concept confined to the physical plane. Beauty is multi-dimensional to include brainpower, values and character. But this lesson has since been posed to Filipino pageant fans: when will we ever learn?

  4. Congrats to Rachel on a wonderful run, she did us proud! Winning MU really is about getting all stars to align – from being a strong candidate with beauty and wits, to being a favorable upgrade for the brand, to delivering a stellar performance in finals. It can be said that winning MU starts long before the candidates even show up to the pageant.

I will say that MU’s winners under IMG have a certain “look,” one akin to a Victoria’s Secret Angel (Pia included). That being considered, I do believe Rachel was the best bet we could have sent this year. Next year I vote for Charmaine Elima.

  5. The prettiest last night were Venezuela and Thailand . Napaka-Linis and expensive tingnan ni Maria . She reminded me of Pia on finals night .
I can’t believe Jamaica and Colombia made it into the top 16 . Beauty wise , they were inferior . I guess good articulation really mattered a lot .

  6. May scoliosis ba si Rachel? Lagi kasi nakataas ang balikat niya, which is dapata relax ang shoulders as per venus raj, iba talaga ang tayo at posture ng A & Q.

    • She has no neck and her shoulders are too broad. Na highlight Yan during day 1 when they had their photoshoot with the perfect face. Palpak agad Ang styling team nya when she wore that turtleneck.

    • I watched the pageant. Miss Philippines was one of the prettiest among the top 10, way prettier than Colombia, Thailand and Jamaica. The female host was even gushing about how beautiful Miss Philippines was. The one thing that I thought that she lacked was the determined facial expressions that both Colombia and SA had. They were smizing left and right, which the hosts also noted. In the end, the best smizer won. But beauty wise, Rachel topped them all easily.

  7. Naisip ko lang… SA MGA CANDIDATES s Bb. Pilipinas 2017, parang wlang pwedeng ipalit kay Rachel eh…

Katarina is pretty pero mejo sablay s katawan.

    Elizabeth Clenci… pwede cguro…

Mahina ba ang Bb. Pilipinas 2017 batch? What do you think?

    • I think chanel thomas is a good candidate for miss u. Universal ang beauty niya. Plus personality niya na bubbly and witty.

      • Channel Thomas have an okey personality but not for Miss Universe type and her beauty is questionnable.
Clenci is the best choice! She should have win instead of Africa South.

  8. Well deserved win for South Africa.

I think Rachel got nervous and overwhelmed. She was not enjoying thus her stars did not shine the brightest. Its not her destiny but so proud of her! Ang ganda nya sa SS/EG. Di lang tlaga para sa kanya.

  9. Just watched the pageant again. I noticed that parang minadali ang contest.

Wala yatang natapilok or nadapa hehehe.

    • I wish they would have spent less on the very long top 16 announcement and introduction and more focus on swimsuit, evening gown and interview.

I also hope they bring back the top 10 casual interview in the future during Miriam’s time.

  10. Winning is destiny. 😚 I am very proud of Rachel Peters I know she gave her everything. Congrats to the new Miss Universe, deserving of the crown. Love love love!!!! 😉

  11. Moral of the story;
Bb. Pilipinas should send a delegate with an unquestionably gorgeous face, fit body, and is well spoken next year.
Maxine Medina made it into the top 5 even if her gown was not great because her face is one of the prettiest and she had that glow about her.
Willing nga yata ang MU na ipanalo siya kaya lang she’s simply not a good public speaker.

    • Agree. For me, facially, Maxine is the most beautiful delegate we’ve had in recent years.
Pwede ba na face of Maxine, body of Rachel, intellect of Shamcey, x-factor of Pia, grace of Venus at balat ni Ariela! Charot!

    • For me, Rachel is one of the prettiest in this batch of MU.

  12. Her hairstyle does not suit the Mikimoto crown! Kind of suits the french fries crown (I know the name bet ko lang tawagin na french fries)
Pero like Iris and Pia before her, her hair looked like it was styled to wear a crown!

  14. Factors which led to Rachel’s loss:

    1. She was not the best walker.
    2. She was not the prettiest.
    3. She did not have the most interesting backstory.
    4. She came from the wrong continent: 2014: South America, 2015: Asia, 2016: Europe, 2017: Africa
    5. She’s in a relationship.

Ask yourselves, saan ba nag stand out si Ate rachel? If wala, mag eexpect ba talaga tayo na mananalo siya?

Stop blaming Pia. Stop making excuses. She was just not the best last night.

      • I agree. But, why did she not exude the most confidence during swimwear round?

Rampa.

  15. Well at least Demi Leigh cemented her status as front runner all the way to finals and she probably gave the judges an easier time as well. Her styling was on point. Her gown was short since she isn’t very statuette.

It goes to show that facial beauty + personality + intelligence + relevance (accomplishments as a woman of today) are the main things that MU is looking for at the moment.

  16. ENOUGH! MOVE ON NA! PINOYS JUST CANNOT ACCEPT DEFEAT BECAUSE EVERY YEAR FILIPINOS ALWAYS THINK OUR CANDIDATE IS ALWAYS THE BEST AMONG THE REST. KAYA PAG NA TALO DI AGAD MAKAPAG MOVE ON. We need to start appreciating how blessed we are compare to other countries na minsan di pa nakapasok sa semifinal.

    • Huh? On the contrary majority of the pinoys accepted Rachel’s fate.

    • Uh oh, Titos n Titas. You’re dead wrong. The pinoy pageant fans have matured over the years. Figuratively, and literally then siempre. Lol

Dont to get to vote vote vote for Chanel guys

  18. Let’s admit it, Rachel’s backstory has no social relevance compared to what most girls in the top 10 have. At ang kakulangan nya sa aspetong yan ay hindi nya nacompensate sa kanyang mediocre performance in the gown and swimsuit rounds. She simply lacked the personality and oomph factor like how Pia did it in 2015. Kitang kita naman kung paano nangabog ang personality ni SA at Colombia and even Jamaica, though hindi lang ito nasustain ng huli.

    • I’ve lurked through these boards but this is the first time I will be posting something. I agree, Rachel was lacking in a back story. If her camp had strategized well on how to package her, they could have hired a person with a PR background to help make a strong and interesting spin on her life story. Everybody has a story, it just depends on how you tell it. Seeing how Rachel is a bit shy (and nothing is wrong with that) KF could have at least helped her highlight interesting things about her life. What drives her, and how she can make a difference. She is an intelligent woman, and having those keypoints could’ve helped her sell herself to the MUO brand. Really loved Rachel and I think she had it, but didn’t play her cards right. All the contestants had their weaknesses too, but they improved on it because they had a strategy. I think Rachel did get nervous and let the weakness get the best of her. Anyways moving forward to BBP 2018, our next rep needs to embody the MUO brand. There is nothing wrong with the mahinhin shy Filipina personality, pero as an MU, you need to bring the IT factor. Know your way on the stage, excude confidence under pressure, be effortless, genuine and sincere, be humble but also know how to bullsh*t and get away with it.

Just as an example using another contestant who failed to win; Miss Thailand is really strong but has weaknesses too. BUt she was determined and hungry for the crown. Played her cards right by being in your face and getting sought out by MUO. But then she fumbled in the Q&A – and that’s because of a mixture or nervousness and because her advocacy seemed rehearsed to me. I really liked her when she won, but the moment she stepped into Vegas and starting being Miss Friendly Friend to everyone, I smelled BS. She talked about helping teen pregnancy in her interview – but was stammering for an answer during Q&A. If she was really genuine about her advocacy, that would have been the first thing she brought up. Anyways Q&A is there to weed out the superficial.

As for me, I think Apriel Smith needs to be the next MUP.

Thanks to this blog for great news on Philippine pageantry. I like how balanced the comments and news are. Also feel it isn’t as toxic as some other pageant forums available, but not as blind follower-ish as instagram fan accounts are as well.

  19. PART 1

My honest thoughts on the just concluded Miss Universe pageant:

    1. It’s a well-deserved win for South Africa. She looked beautiful, she exuded confidence the whole duration of the show, and she nailed the final Q&A (Obviously, her answer during the top 5 Q&A was not noteworthy na ‘di ko na maalala ang tanong sa kanya. Pilipinas–una muna ang supporting details, then the main idea. Ang ganda ng bagsak ng sagot niya. Ang lakas ng impact kumbaga. Tapos, her look! What an upgrade from her prelims look. Parang magkaibang tao sila. Gusto ko ‘yung gown niya na long sleeves–imposing and regal ang vibe. Kamukha niya si Zuleyka Rivera. Again, she’s really beautiful and smart and speaks English really well na ‘di mo na mapapansin ang height niya. Saan ka pa, right???

    2. I’m not particularly a fan of Colombia’s physicality (Big-boned ba tawag dun? Basta, malaking bulas siya, but her body’s really tight, ha.), but napaka-endearing niya while answering the questions. She reminds me a little bit of Paulina Vega.

    3. I love the fact na ininsert ni Jamaica ang advocacy niya during the final Q&A, but the transition from her answering the question then connecting it to her advocacy was not that smooth. She could’ve structured it better. I admire her conviction, however. Makikinig ka talaga when she speaks kasi well-modulated voice niya.

    4. Thailand. Correct me if I’m wrong, but to me she looked skinnier than when she competed in Ms. Thailand. Very prominent na ‘yung bones niya, especially ‘nung she went for a swept-back do during the EG round. Nagmumura na ‘yung cheekbones tsaka chin niya. She looked kinda dry. But, her classic beauty could save her anytime of the year. During the top 5 Q&A, she did good than bad actually, kaso medyo nalito lang siya the first half ng sagot niya. Nabawi naman niya in the end. How old is she na ba? Pwede pa ba siyang sumali sa Ms. World? Pwede siya doon. Sayang din beauty and height ng babaeng ‘to, tsaka she speaks English well. A woman like her is hard to come by. Baka matagalan pa bago makakita ang Thailand ng babae of Maria’s caliber.

    5. What else to say about Venezuela but that she came fucking prepared??? Ang linis ng paserela, and her projection couldn’t be more perfect. Magaling rin sumagot! She, however, just wasn’t destined to win tonight. I guess she lacked the winner vibe, or better yet, natabunan winner vibe niya ng winner vibes ng ibang candidates. And, I didn’t like the gown. Medyo outdated.

    6. I like USA. She’s pretty and smart, and THAT.BACKGROUND. Kasi baka lumamon ng mic at ma-overshadow sina Thailand and South Africa? Possibly.

    7. Kinabahan ako kay Iraq, akala ko she’ll be favored to win kasi articulate nga naman niya and her personal background is inspiring. Everyone loves some drama. Right? Wait… did she bleach her hair? Ba’t parang super washed out yata hair color niya tonight? ‘Di bagay sa kanya. She looked way more stunning sa clip na ipinakita during the show.

    8. Israel. Are you kidding me? She looked so beautiful. And, Germany as well.

    9. Ang funny kasi ‘di ba ‘yung pumapasok sa hot picks is Iceland? Tapos ‘yung nakapasok sa first cut Ireland. Wow rin this girl. She looks like Reese Witherspoon.

    10. Canada looked dry.

  20. My honest thoughts on the just concluded Miss Universe pageant:

    9. Ang funny kasi ‘di ba ‘yung pumapasok sa hot picks is Iceland? Tapos ‘yung nakapasok sa first cut Ireland. Wow rin this girl. She looks like Reese Witherspoon.

    10. Canada looked dry.

    11. What a pleasant surprise China was! Akala ko malayu-malayo mararating niya:( I didn’t hear anyone talk about her prior to the finals, tapos biglang pasok. Ako, I have never paid attention to her nor seen any pictures of her until na-aanounce siya as one of top 16 finalists.

    12. I’m kinda proud of Sri Lanka, kaso it’s obvious na she lacked training sa pasarela tsaka walang fierceness. The best Sri Lanka candidate ever sent to MIss U. Please verify my statement.

    13. Si Indonesia ‘di nakapasok despite the hype! Why? What happened? Na-jinx ang chances because of the hype? Tell me.

    14. I love this new format. So exciting! Kaso, mas gusto ko ‘yung lumalabas ang score beside the candidate. Ugh, I miss the old times.

    15. And, to our very own Rachel Peters… God knows I voted for her many times. Siya lang ang kandidata natin na binoto ko ng ganun karami because I believed in her. Top 10 isn’t too bad. Congratulations! But, after serious contemplation naiintindihan ko bakit she didn’t advance any further. She lacked fire in her eyes. In a sea of really beautiful ladies who are hungry to win the much coveted crown, mada-drown out talaga ‘yung subdued approach niya. It’s not enough to just be yourself. You need to be the best version of yourself when you’re on that kind of stage. But, I’m not blaming her whatsoever kasi baka ‘yun siya talaga, but I would’ve loved it if she’d shown more passion and grit. Siguro kinabahan siya, and I understand. Her batch is one of the, if not THE, most competitive in MU history. She did better during the prelims in my humble opinion. She was more confident that time. She was more inconquerable that time. Just like my comment kay Maria, a girl of Rachel’s caliber is hard to come by. The height, the body, the class, and the quiet confidence–she’s quite a rarity dito sa’tin.

Tsaka, ‘wag na tayong magpaka-ipokrito, Rachel’s facial beauty is not really her strength, but I applaud her and her team for coming up with a look na magha-highlight ng best features niya. Her look during the finals was more of a hit than a miss.

One more thing. Saan ang pasabog na sinasabi nila? Akala ko magtu-twirl siya ng bongga during the swimsuit round or kung may anong paandar siya during the evening gown round? So, ganun na ‘yun??? Rodgil, please explain. CHOS.

Tsaka, ‘yung profile video! Sana kahit sinama man lang ‘yung nag-birthday siya with the less fortunate kids of Tondo. She loves the beach and owns a coffee shop? I mean, what’s inspiring about those things? Just wrong on so many levels.

PS Naghahanap pala ako ng jowa. Message me if you’re interested. Cute naman ako. HAHAHAHAHA

  21. I just noticed that in the usual strong “P girls”, only the Philippines made it.

Michael Cinco pala young red gown ni Iris. The look is the same as what Pia wore last year (also a Michael Cinco) in blue.

    World Peace.

  22. Just wondering… Was Russia eliminated even before the finals night/even before the competition? Russia was not grouped in Europe, neither in Asia Africa Oceania. Watch again the global map flashed on Screen several times, The map of Russia never lit up.

    • Russia is divided into Europe and Asia by Ural Mountains.
The European side of Russia was lightened while Siberian Russia was ment just blackened. She was in European group. Tbey intend not to lightened Siberian map and only the Eropean side of Russia

Dapat kc ni retain ung top 6 format just like last year tyak pasok sya.. Charot. Thank you Rachel for representing we’ll our country.. Ganda ng gown..and it suited you we’ll..

    • And “Paula Shugart” will have aneurysm in 2018. Will survive, but comatose until 2055. Just in time to witness the winning of Ms. Philippines. Lol.

      World Peace.

      • Philippines will never win MU again unless they buy the franchise and it will be held in Philippines like homecourt win of your ME

The first few weeks of her reign was mired with so much bashing from fans of the other aggrieved party. The happiness wasn’t full or complete. I think that is why we are still hungry for another win in order to feel complete as victorious fans.

    • While Colombians are still getting the same trauma everytime their candidate is in Top 3 . That trauma of being called the winner then demoted. Or by reminding them that they will always be runner up and no more crowns for them. Very frustrating feeling.

  25. Dear SMA,

While I’m sad that Rachel didn’t reach Top3, I feel vindicated for the second time around!

    Ansabi sa comment pre-Binibini?

The “mongoloid” look is not acceptable to Western archetype daw!!!! Ayyyy-uhhhh! Kasama si Miss China sa Top 16!

    Looking forward to BBP 2018!

    #evilsoul

  26. Miss universe is looking for a really pretty face! Height doesnt matter at all as long as you have the language of confidence that you believe that you are a miss universe mattmerial i the final round. Maybe each segment they are looking a particular look. The org likes tough woman not the sweet one thats what iris and pia have in common and now demi.

  27. @Norman

I have been an avid reader & commenter since 2010. My name went from MU2010 to now, 2017.

How come all of a sudden my comments are needing authorization???

    I NEED ANSWERS!!!!

    • It’s with the email address , I reckon. WordPress screens email addresses of commenters regularly and it takes time to lift off their auto-moderation of the same. 😕

  28. with the placement of China in the wild card, I am just wondering whether the casino lords in Vegas who also own properties in Macau are lobbying to get the MU 2018 to be held there next year … just a conspiracy theory stuff…

    • China is one of my favorites.
I like her look and personal style.
She’s like the cool chick you want hang out with.

    • it’s the Victoria’s Secret on the 29th being held for the first time in China. Mileage makitang nag place sa top 15 first ang China sa MU before VS event

  29. She is meant to win. Congratulations.

Upon closer scrutiny though of her face, I couldn’t help but wonder. Most beauty queens have prominent upper bites (chicklet teeth). A few times, we’ve seen queens with prominent lower bites (pointed chin) ala Wyn Wyn Marquez. This is the first time I am seeing a queen with both. Lol. I couldn’t decide. Anyway, just saying.

    World Peace.
