The online bashings for newly-crowned Miss Earth 2017 Karen Ibasco are brutal and unkind. And she doesn’t deserve any of the hurtful attacks thrown at her direction.
This is exactly my interpretation of her facial reactions when it was just her and Miss Colombia Juliana Franco left uncalled among the Final 4. One half is wanting to win the crown after such a sterling performance during the last Q&A, while the other half is showing uncertainty on whether she wants to be called Miss Earth for fear of what could happen next.
Being host delegate is really a tricky proposition however which way you look at it. Perform well and everyone in the country will want you to win. But ACTUALLY winning the whole thing brings about mixed emotions.
Right now, the online community is negatively feasting on Karen’s victory like being served a nearly-spoiled meal that leaves a bad taste in the mouth. But let it be known that the judges scored the Final 4 fair and square. I was initially hoping for her to get “Air” (or any of the other elements which are of equal importance) so that she will get due recognition for a job well done while still protecting the pageant brand from criticisms of being biased to Miss Philippines all the time. The tally of scores cannot be compromised, though. She is the rightful winner. And even the other delegates would agree that this is a well-deserved win from all counts.
Karen Ibasco may not be the most gorgeous of them all. But her voice, heart and mind may be just what Mother Earth needs to elevate the people’s response to the call of nature to real action about the environment.
Congratulations, Miss Earth 2017!
