  1. I thought I would not anymore dignify repugnant comments thrown in this blog because the highly charged atmosphere here would find an anyone with contrary opinion jeered to oblivion and hacked to shreds by partisan trolls—as if beauty contest is a life-and-death issue.

But I cannot let this one entry just below pass by without saying a word because its abomination goes beyond the issue of beauty to the issue of national identity. This is yet one example of a concept of beauty that is as narrow as an alley leading to a garbage dump. Since when did the surnames Calingo, Supsup, Tugonon make one “unmarketable”? Is it because they do not sound Spanish or American or European? It is not enough that some people regard Malay prototypes as not beautiful compared with those with pointed noses, fair skins, and long limbs. Some extend this prejudice to the notion that those with Malay-sounding names are “not marketable”.

The surnames Calingo, Supsup, Tugonon, to a non-Filipino is the most marketable one because they are authentic Malay-sounding names. To foreigners, the names sound exotic and carry an unmistakable mystique, far from the ordinary they encounter everyday. What’s more, these people are no ordinary beauty of Malay stock. Calingo is an honor graduate of an Ivy League school in the USA. Supsup is a magna cum laude in Architecture the premier university in the Philippines and a topnotcher in the National Licensure Exams for Architects. Tugonon is a magna cum laude in Industrial Pharmacy in one of the world’s most prestigious Catholic University. Supsup and Tugonon notched top honors in their respective MU contests because they personify the true “confidently beautiful” imagery—beauty, brains and character.

Maganda yung dating. Calingo Tugonon Supsup meh

  3. She is not my bet for the ultimate crown, pero i can see her winning one of the minor crowns kasi may ibubuga naman sya.

  4. she’s beautifu, sexy and very smart… but for me she has no wow factor/charming beauty for the crown esp in Miss Universe abd Miss International!

  5. To scorg who apparently is too proud and mighty to mention the names of the people that respond to him : your verbal diarrhea is not doimg your bet a favor. The resulting low potassium makes your argument weak and pointless.
BTw , this is not a literary contest . It’s just us talking casually here.

  6. 🎵And I am telling you, there’s no way, no, no, no, no way🎶 this girl will win unless may hokus-pokus na maganap. It’s not “panglalait” if we are saying the truth na hindi talaga siya maganda.

France, pangit ba? Or mediocre ba ang beauty?

    • Last comment ko na to kay little spoiled Charice. So ignore na lang after this. Lolz. Being a good speaker doesn’t make you einstein intelligent, magaling ka lang magsalita. Yun lang. I wish you well, at kung intelligent ka talaga sana you’re using your money sa Belo or Calayan, hindi sa paid supporters mo at kung anu-anong fake charity or ka-echusan. Gamitin din ang utak, minsan. Alam mo ba ang pinasukan mo ineng Charice? Again and again and again, beauty pageant po ito.

Period. Babush. Adios. Get lost. Chos.

      • Nice. Long and scathing .. but fun at least to Arienne non-supporters

      • U know AnaW, she may be honest abt charity . As u said , Mama and Papa are rich . Unlike Megan and Pia . She does not have to support her family so she can concentrate on her advocacies.
But what the hell, does anyone know any beauty queen who stayed with her charitos way past her reign? These girls need to make a living for themselves and thierfamilies .

      • Excuse me again po, Ms. Anawindang. God bless you po.

Ano ba yung contest? Pageant di ba? Beaucon?! Hindi speech and drama o quiz bee! At yung smart smart niya peke peke din!

“Calingo’s time at Woodbury was not without controversy. The wife of Woodbury’s prior president, Rose Nielsen, claimed she was fired in September 2012 after complaining of mistreatment of university employees by Calingo’s wife, Gemeline Calingo.”

    • Wow Anawindang. I commend you on your efforts to write this. Napakarami mo namang oras! You have so much hate for a person you have not met, yet you spent so much time writing an essay on Arienne. Almost 5 paragraphs! Imagine all the good you could do if you spent your time writing things that were not filled with disgust and contempt.

I am a close family friend of the Calingos, and I have watched their three daughters grow, and have definitely seen Arienne blossom into the beautiful, caring, and humble person she is today. She is a true woman of substance and a role model sa mga kababaihan. Wala siyang mga paid supporters – as you wrote. Hindi mayaman ang pamilya niya and, kung salaki mang may kayamanan sila, her family does not believe in cheating the system like buying a pageant as you suggested.

I wish you, Anawindang, all the blessings, and may God bless you. You seem to have some pent up anger, so I hope you find the help and strength to take care of it.
      God bless you.

    • Correction, Ms. Anawindang. We respect your right to express your opinion but we should not tolerate libel on social media.

    • @ carl i dont want to compare the two smart ladies but since you started this . I want to give my two cents. Nicole Cordoves is 5′ 8 (3 inches= 7.62 cm height differences ), long long legs, ateneo graduate , speech writer, miss chinatown winner , miss grand international first runner up 2016and ms. cordoves speak with humility, she also have nice cheekbones and (a flawless underarm di lang ako nakapansin) I assume Nicole is also fluent in mandarin and fookien. when Cordoves talk to the person she interviews she genuinely register as warm and interested.
Arienne is 5’5 ,fr an ivy school, first runner up mwp no amazing cheekbones, she doesnt register as humble, a polygot
I like these 2 smart ladies but cordoves whether you like it or not is incomparable.im even wishing Cordoves tries mwp in the near future.
Arienne can be mgi rep hand in hand w aces

    • Eh kaya nga naluz valdez din to di ba?

  8. If she wins MUP17, history may repeat itself. We sent Alagao in 2000, hoping that someone who has a good command of the english language would finally bring us home the bacon, because Quiambao faltered in the Q&A in 1999. If we really want to win the DIC crown in the years to come, we should send someone who is a total package. Someone who is not only beautiful but also intelligent, personable, talented, relatable and compassionate with a gorgeous body and a generous heart.

    • Marami sa candidates ngayon ganyan! Wag kasi magbulag-bulagan na si Jonas mangkukulam lang ang makakapagpa-win! Diyosko mga pagmumukha nga nila di nila maayos!

    • Nina was simply unlucky .
If she had repped the Philippines today, It would have been a different outcome.

  9. Someone replied to my earlier post on advocacy that “this is still a beauty pageant”. I agree– this is a beauty pageant, a celebration of beauty. But what is the concept of beauty in today’s world? We’ve got to admit it has gone beyond the physical, to include the cerebral and spiritual. And even the physical aspect is not absolute, as it is largely defined by cultural norms. Thus, pageant organizers have long realized that the survival of their business depends on how their brands meaningfully relate to the everyday lives of their audiences. Thus, almost all of them surround their brands with elements like “confidence”, “with a purpose”, “earth warriors”, “stop the war”, “charities”, etcetera. The labels are not sugar-coaters. This is now a sine qua non in the beauty pageant industry. A pageant business cannot hope to gain and maintain corporate sponsors, institutional partners, private donors and even government support if their brand equity is simply physical beauty. It cannot hope to capture and sustain the interest of worldwide audiences if the product offer is only about physical beauty. Thus we see an annual search for spokespersons on “confidence”, “humanitarian projects”, “ecology”, “world peace”, etcetera. To survive, beauty pageant brands should be no different from any successful consumer product– they have to sell their brand essence. Like Nike– it does not sell shoes, it sells “pursuit of excellence”. Like Coke– it does not sell softdrink, it sells “fun”. Thus, I look at any annual pageantry as a search for who will best personify a pageant organization’s brand essence, and it is beyond the subjective concept of physical beauty.

    • Yes indeed Scorg “beauty pageants has gone beyond physical but also cerebral and spiritual” but the thing is Arienne lacks one of those which is beauty. I am really sorry to say that but it’s the naked truth.

      • I respect your opinion Jeremy. Based on your own standard of physical beauty, she may be lacking. And I must admit, my perception of candidates are based only on online images, not from personal encounter. But I happen to also appreciate the non-Western beauty archetype, most probably because I work and studied abroad and have travelled in many countries. That’s why I can find some with Asian looks, or even African features, to be physically beautiful vis-a-vis European and Latina types. If we are talking about physical beauty alone, to me all of the candidates are very beautiful, and Maine Elima exceptionally ravishing. However, my overall ranking based on my own criteria puts Arienne on top, and– you would not believe it– Angelique de Leon second.

      • Scorg, I’ve lived and travelled in all continents including some obscure places in Africa and Eurasia but there is no way that Arienne typifies the so-called asian beauty or let’s just oriental beauty, let’s leave that to the likes of Mirriam Quiambao, Janine Tugonon, Michelle Yeoh, Karen Mok. Not only that, Ariene does not also typifies the so-called true pinay beauty, let’s leave that to the likes of Janicel Lubina, Charmaine Elima, Nina Ricci Alagao etc. I am sorry but I have to disrespect your opinion and let me say that Ariene is not beautiful at all. Pero ipagpatuloy mo lang yan hihihihi

    • Well, at least Scorg admittedly is a fan of Arienne based on his personal criteria. Let’s respect that. It all boils down to the trite but true “Beauty is subjective or Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. Many of us are just simply not admirers of Miss Calingo, and we cannot ignore the fact that there’s also a lot out there who are followers (paid or not). The least that non-fans can do is to bash her until she proves herself in MU, which I will not do since to me, it’s just a waste of energy and time. The question is will she be able to snatch a crown, and assuming that she does, would she get the highest title (the one that she apparently is dreaming of).

O Miss Impakta Speaking Contest! Miss Universe lalabanan ng mga yan!

  10. She needs to make sure she looks good in swimsuit and EG… or she will suffer the same fate as Maria Gigante or Mia Howell who never got the chance to show their speaking skills.

  11. Beauty is subjective, based on the past winners of Miss Grand. The Thai based pageant also wants to create a statement just like Miss Universe hence both may crown an unconventional beauty this year. And on top of all that, Miss Grand require a high level of intelect for a contestant to make it to the TOP 5… We should never falter in sending the smartest girl. Arienne may be an exotic native beauty who’s far from Filipino ideals but she is miles ahead of the Thai representative Pataporn Wang who won Miss Intercontinental. She’s the same height as Ali Forbes who was 3rd runner-up of Miss Grand and Gloria Diaz, who’s our 1st Miss Universe. And let us not forget that Arriene is 1st runner-up to Catriona Gray which is a huge feat specially for a girl with native ancestry. Height is not an issue here since she’ll become representative of a country with an average female height of 5′ flat and her real height of 5’5 1/2 is within the height range of a qualified contestant… And finaly, based on academic credentials, Arriene excells over all those girls including my personal fave, Nicole Cordoves who was Miss Grand, 1st runner-up.

  12. Really, Arienne actually said “I am a woman of substance” in this interview? In my experience, only arrogant people with grandiose egos would say that about themselves.

Sorry to say that, but it’s true.

    • I don’t see anywhere she said it . And even if she did, I do not see anything wrong with that at all.

      • She did say it, last sentence of her response to first question. Medyo me mahangin nga ang dating. Palampasin nlang…

      • Arienne is a woman of substance. Why? Arienne has embraced her individuality and is happy with the way she is. She uses her voice to speak about her advocacy – the plight of disadvantaged children – even before she joined pageantry. She has found her dream in life and is pursuing it. She has lived up to her morals and values. Isn’t this what we wish for every Filipina to be?

    • @Melanie

I don’t think there is anything wrong with that if you really have the goods to back it up and she does. Its the same as Pia anouncing to the universe that she’s confidently beautiful with a heart.

    • While this comment will be deleted by Norman as she favors Calingo, please tell this girl to learn some lesson on being humble, being real and to be kind. She needs those virtues and she can be appreciated.

      • Hello Gloria Moran,
I am repeating this to you as well (I wrote to Melanie also). You mention that saying “Woman of Substance” is arrogant. Do you even know what that term means? I am going to leave this link here, so you can see what it means: http://swsg.org/be-a-woman-of-substance/. If you do not wish to click the link, here’s a brief explanation – a woman of substance is a woman of positive influence, someone who uses her voice to create change, and someone who lives up to their morals and values. Having known Arienne and her family for many years, she is all these. Now I ask, where is the arrogance here? Isn’t being a woman of substance what women’s liberation is all about? Have a blessed day.

    • We’re sorry to disagree, and we’re glad that there is still freedom of speech in this country. Why did we brand Arienne a woman of substance? Arienne has embraced her individuality and is happy with the way she is. She uses her voice to speak about her advocacy – the plight of disadvantaged children – even before she joined pageantry. She has found her dream in life and is pursuing it. She has lived up to her morals and values. Isn’t this what we wish for every Filipina to be?

That’s all

    • Jeremi every single one of them wants MUP. This should not even be an issue , tse hihihi

      • Fabian be realistic naman. There’s no way in a million years that Arienne coould win over the likes of Elima, Peters, Sutton, Ambal, Ibe, Tomas, the 2 de leons and yes even your Dindi. Yes Fabian, I would choose your Dindi at anytime of the day over Ariene. Sabi nga nila If you had to choose between two evils, choose the lesser one! Tse hahahahaha

    • Ilusyunada!

  14. Arienne’s advocacy, education reform, is a compelling cause for any international pageant organization to espouse. In this day and age where truth is under siege by “alternative facts”, propaganda, half-truths and downright lies, propagated by forces out to obliterate critical thinking, and unwittingly abetted by Twitter and other social media, it is imperative for social institutions to fight the systematic anesthesization of the human mind. I know Arriene is in the league of Shamcey Supsup, Theresa Licaros, Zora Andam, Nicole Cordovez, to name a few, who have what it takes to bring an organization towards owning an advocacy.

One of my favorites ko cya to get a crown!

  16. I really want to Arienne to win a crown! I am thinking she will place in the Coronation night given she has beauty, grace, and outstanding credentials. She is the perfect candidate for a victory in Miss Grand International but we may not know she might be our representative in Miss Universe. I do agree Miss Universe Organization being owned now by IMG now is looking for a girl who can represent the Organization well and I believe Arienne has that. She is like Anna Theresa Licaros but I think when she speaks she is more subtle and clever maybe because she is also a lecturer. The problem I see that Binibining Pilipinas might not give her the Miss Universe Philippines crown is her height. But now I know why Olivia Culpo put on that hairstyle in Miss Universe 2012 that many of us did not like. She lack on height and that hairstyle make her seem a bit taller. But I don’t suggest her to put on that hair style especially in the coronation night of Binibining Pilipinas because it might hurt her chances of winning if it does not look good on her. I think she should still stick to a hairstyle that looks good on her. But I saw her instagram and I think she transformed on her styling.

  17. I strongly suspect that post-Trump MUO is trying to reinvent its brand essence encapsulated in the “confidently beautiful” tagline. The choice of Miss France as the personification of this message reveals a brand-building effort towards an integral beauty– physically and cerebrally beautiful and projects this beauty with ease in verbal and body language. There are several candidates in this year’s batch who very well fits into this mould. But if MOU is also looking for someone who can be an effective spokesperson for its advocacies, and convincingly win corporate sponsors, Arienne is a good candidate. Her Ivy-league credentials will certainly add value to the MOU brand. That would be her differential advantage over the rest of competition. Can she be the personality that could easily connect to worldwide audiences, and win over corporate sponsors? I believe she has what it takes.

    • @ scorg : Good afternoon/morning/evening. Sorry, I do not know where everybody’s time zone is.

Nicely said! Iris Mittenaere would be flattered.

  18. i would suggest a bun na medyo angat ang hair sa front.parang makaluma bun for ms arriene to give additional 1-2 inches sa height .

  19. If she wins MUP17, history may repeat itself. We sent Alagao in 2000, hoping that someone who has a good command of the english language would finally bring us home the bacon, because Quiambao faltered in the Q&A in 1999. Someone who is not only beautiful but also intelligent, personable, talented, relatable and compassionate with a generous heart.

  20. Bakit gumanda yata lahat ng mga candidates after announcement of the Top 40.
Good Luck Ms Calingo and Congrats Nawat for choosing Miss Arienne Calingo as MGI 2017 🙂

    • It’s not the MGI she’s dreaming to have, it’s clear that she’s rooting for MUP based on her statements. Mas okey sana kung inuna nya muna na sinabing she has the traits that the BBP is looking for. Sabagay, mukhang may laban naman siya, Pinay beauty+body to die for+ smarts= winner. #bawi-bawipagmaytime

      • I want her to win MUP but she can’t.

      • @ TheNewbieObserver : Good afternoon/morning/evening.

Speaking of which, Puteri will have its 2017 conclusion tonight! Natalie Glebova, Ariska Putri Pertiwi, and Iris Mitenaere are in Indonesia ATM for this.

With C-1000 as a loyal MU sponsor, we can expect Indonesia to consistently place in the MU pageant in the immediate future. After all, MONEY talks in this Donald Trump era.

  21. I believe aces and queens has a total repackaging prepared for her once she wins one of the crowns. So far, she is performing well in the activities and photoshoots. Go Calingo! Not to mention she is well liked and applauded by the 2016 queens.

  22. Nichole Cordovez 2.0 well-spoken but not that pretty. I guess everyone here knows that I am not a fan of Nichole so the same goes to Arienne.

      • Hahahaha Fabian sorry iniisip ko kasi si Nichole Manalo, one of the prettiest binibinis (post surgery of course)

      • Fabian I never said that nicole is boba hahahaha it’s just that I find her cocky sometimes but well, I stand to what I’ve been saying na di sya maganda yun lang

  23. Arienne, get some pointers from Ibe on how o make your nose smaller. Right now , I see Jaya and Charice rolled into one

  24. Hi,#Binibini2 Arienne congrat…& I cheers my greets to our/my #QueenP #MissUniverse2015 for her hard working in #65thMissUniverse held in #Philippines may #God kept on strength her with healthwise.

  25. She is beautiful. di ko lang masyadong bet sakanya yung ponytail hairstyle. I believe she is eyeing for MGI title. saw her instagram post and she posted a photo of her na naka thai costume (i believe) with thai caption. feeling ko lang ha.

  26. She is sweet, smart, and sexy. Her photo shoots remind me of Isabelle Daza, Nadine Lustre, and Mafae Yunon Belasco – who happens to be her mentor if I read correctly. Please let’s crown her!

  27. As we’ve seen before, expect wonders from Binibini#2! “It ain’t over till it’s over.” #GoCalingo #Binibini2 #ArienneForTheCrown

  28. Yung 3 wish list ko: Dindi for MUP, Sirene for MS and Arienne for MGI.

Pag nakuha niya MGI crown, it would be a 2way process. Maganda para SA future ng career Niya and beneficial para SA organization ni baklush given Yung background Niya.

E2 Ang subtle version ni Nicole this year. I’ve listen how Arienne answered question at MWP and at Binibini FB page and kailangan PA Niya i-tone down ng konti yung mga statement Niya Kasi parang authoritative Ang dating. There is no doubt that she can express her thought succinctly.

I know maraming nainis sa kanya for flaunting her Ivy League degree pero there are other girls also who did the same if their introductory video will be replayed.

I drop her as alternate to MUP Kasi mas ramdam ko si Angelique to be more fitted as alternate. Issue ko lang Kay Angelique is less Asian yung dating Niya thus I opted for Dindi.

Dahil medyo kinulang SA height si Ate, I suggest a high bun or chignon styling for her para magmukha siyang matangkad since proportional naman leeg and shoulder Niya.

  30. I like her. She was 1st runner up @ MWP 2016. Her communication skills are off the charts and she has a physique that rocks! Look at her swimsuit photo… an hourglass⌛

    👍👍

  31. Not a fan of her beauty. But she has a good chance because of her Q&A skills, educational background and Aces & Queens training. I’m sure medyo kapalan lang ang make-up ma-transform din to diff looks. So far pare-pareho looks nya. Iffy lang ako sa height nya. If she can pull off a stunning looks, the height wont matter. She’s more MW than MU.

  32. Too many pageants now don’t just want looks – they want a girl with a brain, diba? Let’s not disclude her! Go Binibini 2! She has confidence!

    • Sadly, I agree. Its been a decade since Licaros.

Let us learn from our mistakes. Or history is doomed to repeat itself. 👋🏼👋🏼

But, I think she would be an amazing MWP. Pretty sure Vegafria will not crown another halfie for a while, she would be an amazing inaugural rep.

      • Well, Licaros sounded very arrogant …. which prob irritated the org and the judges… plus she had a square body.
Arienne’ body looks a lot fitter and she sounds confident but sweet and not pushy.

As for beauty , I hope she gets some pointers from Ibe who transforms from extremely ordinary to extremely gorgeous .. with make up.

      • @fabian

Fair enough but Licaros competed in the Trump era. It was all about facial beauty then.

So sad that Phils missed out on the Asian Invasion of Mexico City that year. Maggie Wilson would have rocked the Auditorio Nacional en DF.

But, Filipinos were blinded by her credentials at home. So, that’s what she brought back home.

      • It was all about beauty during Trump’s time? Uhmm Riyo Mori won that year. So much for beauty, right? It was business as usual for Trump.

      • @Ryan

I find Mori to be a beautiful Japanese woman who defied her county’s norms of boring stage presence.

Plus, she was very well dressed $$$$.

      • @ryan I respect that riyo is not ur cup of tea, but dont be so smug. I dont think your opinion of her represents everyone. so dont touch riyo mori haha . as for saying it was a business decision, I dont think so, if this was the case edi sana the first time mikimoto became a sponsor namayagpag na japanese reps, pero hindi rin naman. ilang years din silang sponsor. also that edition of ms.u , is relatively transparent compared to recent editions as the total score of each candidate appears on screen. riyo was on fire that night, she is my asian dynamite. and for me kung fierceness at style ang paguusapan shes ahead of pia and other recent ms.Us from asia. si pattaporn na lang pagdiskitahan mo, yung pagkaka panalo niya as ms.intercon ang tunay na wtf moment.

  33. Her highest possible placement could be Miss Grand…. next would be a runner-up position…

There are too many front -runners this year based on beauty…
