  1. Paula and Apriel are my favorites here 🙂 Not only are they very talented but very beautiful as well! Paula’s cool Asian mystique is a perfect foil for Apriel’s sultry morenita 🙂

  2. Folks, I think talent contest is not Abt talent per se. Just like the natl costume, it’s another way of showcasing the aspirant’s beauty and personality.
In the pics above, Vina and 10 look the best. If Vina can talk, I’m all for Vina getting MUP.

  3. I think talent portions are old-fashioned and doesn’t really affect who wins in the end. If anything, it puts the less talented in a sore spot and pressures them into inventing talent that just humiliates them.

  4. I’m actually in favor cutting away the whole talent portion of beauty pageants for a couple of reasons:

    1. The talent portion of a beauty pageant is almost exclusively for talents related to the performing arts. Singing, dancing, acting, and even speaking are all talents that can be showcased in this event. But we all know that performing isn’t the only talent that people can have…some girls can be great writers, others can be gifted photographers, or exceptional athletes, or genius accountants, or amazing analytical machines. The talent portion is not conducive for showcasing these kinds of talents.

    2. It’s hard to construct a panel of judges that can adequately assess and award a talent competition when the contestants are displaying different kinds of talents. It’s impossible to say who is better between a singer and a dancer because they are two very distinct disciplines that have their own standards. Just like you wouldn’t ask a doctor about the law, or a lawyer about medicine, it is inappropriate for – say – a dance expert to render judgment on a singer’s performance. Apples and oranges, and the like.

That said, if they want to retain this particular format, then I suggest renaming the award from “Best in Talent” to “Best in Performing Arts” or even “Best Performer”. It might be a simple case of semantics, but it also makes it clear that what is being judged is the impact of the performance, and not the candidate’s skill in a particular field. It’s saying that when Candidate A wins, it’s not that she is a much better dancer than Candidate B is a singer, but that her performance was more impacting and more memorable than any other candidate’s performance.

I know that this sounds nitpicking. One can argue that “Best in Talent” award is already understood…but these little improvements in the format of a pageant are those things na unti-unti inaangat yung pageant.

    Naghelicopter habang nakaupo. Chos!
