2014 has been a relatively good year for American beauty queens to date. It may not be a truly winning year, but they have managed to score key placements worth noting for an on-and-off pageant powerhouse.

While the crown won by Tabitha Lipkin as Miss Scuba International 2014 is not in the same level of the bigger competitions, it is interesting to note that she is one of only a handful of ladies who nailed both the top victory and the Miss Congeniality award in the process.

And to add up to that feat, Andrea Neu got Miss Air in Miss Earth 2014, Elizabeth Safrit took the 2nd Princess nod in Miss World 2014 and Allyn Rose managed to get 3rd Runner-Up during Miss Supranational 2014. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Next stop is technically Miss Tourism International 2014, but I’m pretty sure fans and followers are more eager beavers for the 63rd Miss Universe in Doral Miami next month. How strong will Miss USA Nia Sanchez register in a batch considered to be one of the toughest in years? Another runner-up placement in the offing, perhaps? Olivia Culpo’s win last 2012 in Las Vegas is still too fresh in our minds.

  2. I think MJ already got the skills…. It’s now upto Trump, Paula Shugart and the Judges if she should become the next winner. Remember, Miss U is different from Miss World… In Miss World, aside from their current beauty and background they are also tested on how to handle pressure and if they are real nice people wherever whenever. In Miss Universe, you have to be lively, confident and pleasant to work with… You should be a walking commercial ad because the whole pageant is a giant marketing and PR campaign who is in search of the next endorser of big brands. MJ already has the goods when it comes to looks, skills & background. Kailangan lang natin sya ipamayagpag sa buong mundo… ikalat na sya sa mga pinaja magaganda nyang kuha! 😀

  4. I just realised something very interesting about the patterns of the gowns the winners have worn in the past years.

    In Miss Universe, from 1999 – present, the winners either wore a white gown/off-white gown or red. Riyo Mori, Miss Australia, andDiana Mendoza being the only exceptions.

    In fact since 2010, it the red-white-red-white trend has begun.

    In Miss World meanwhile, from 1993 – present, white is the predominant hue. The next is blue (1999, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2012,) powder blue.

    To complete this interesting trend I hope MJ wears red. 😀

    Miss America looks stunning, but MJ can handle it certainly.

  5. You beat me to the punch on this one Norman. When USA became a runner up in MW, I thought that the USA was doing pretty good in pageants and may just be Country of the Year in pageants with all their runner up placements. Of course there is Thailand and what they’ve accomplished, however, it is arguable on one or two of their placements/wins. In any case, USA is doing well and congratulations to them! Nice to see them do well in this year’s pageants other than MU. MU always seems to be a “given” for USA so seeing them do well in other pageants is refreshing.

For me a Miss Universe does not need to be the most intelligent girl…does not need to be well verse in English….does not need to have done a lot of charitable works….for me once I see the character of the percent…a character that separates her from the rest….that for me is the winner….at nakita ko yun kay MJ….at nakita rin yun ni Gabriella Isler nung nag judge sya dito…..thats why…I like MJ very much….di sumusuko and she is a big dreamer…everything else will follow…im excited for her.

  7. Off Topic: That is some weird looking crown on Ms. Scuba International.

    Sir Norman, if you may. After the Miss Universe pageant and after we see the new crown, can you feature the crowns for each pageant (especially the “big 4”). I am sure that a lot of your readers and followers like me are just curious on the evolution and design of the crowns for each pageant. Thanks in advance.

    And Oh I think that USA will be included in the top 5. With the Latin community in Doral, business is business with Mr. Trump.

    • While MJ has improved a lot in her oral communication skills (specially in spontaneity and being succinct and curt), it is her body language while speaking that I am worried about. She must learn how to relax without losing her poise…she has the tendency to close in her shoulders and arms to her body when she delivers her words. She must learn to open more her arms (with a carefree attitude) to compliment her already much improved speaking skills.

    • I think MJ should just answer in Filipino. I dont think it will make her lesser beautiful & smart. She can’t afford to lose points by stammering like in d video. At d MU stage u stammer even once & it will cost u d crown!

      We can learn 2 things from Janine’s experience on that MU 2012 finals night. She had it in d bag that night until she answered d final Q.

      Lesson 1. Delivery delivery delivery
      Janine’s answer was certainly d best in her batch. Wise if not philosophical. But there was just 1 point where she stammered. Then Olivia answered her Q in such a relax manner & came out witty. Witty + smooth delivery was chosen over Wise – stammer.

      D answer to d Q is d key to winning d crown, but delivery is how u use that key to get to d crown.

      Lesson 2: message over language.
      As what Janine answered that night, it doesnt matter what language u use as long as u have a strong mind & d heart to serve then u can be Miss Universe (or something to that effect).

    • Aj…Review again the QA in the Finals of MU 2012…see how many time Olivia stutters and stammers…see SEQ 3:47-3:50 and 4:00-4:01…and tell me what are those tentativeness are? Yon O:

  11. The big difference between Miss World and Miss Universe are their preliminary activities and scoring process leading to the finals.

    MW is a month long marathon of various contests and events, while MU is more an interview – swimsuit – evening gown 400 yard dash.

    Both have their own “pageant” style and personality and are very enjoyable to watch. Congratulations Miss South Africa and go for the MU crown Mary Jean Lastimosa!

  12. I think USA will place in the top 5 – with Venezuela, Philippines, Brazil and France.

    But I think USA will win its 9th Miss Universe crown.

    In misso, I predicted USA will win last 2012 – and she did.

    In recent years, the number of beauty pageants, local and international competition had increased incredibly in number thus giving every woman crowned the opportunity to stand out at celebrate femininity in a lot of ways and advocacies…My question is what makes Miss Universe winner nowadays different from other pageant winners (MW, MI and ME etc)?…I wanted the top 5 in Miss Universe 2014 to answer that question…especially MJ. 🙂

    • MJ needs to practice her english communication skills if she wants that MU crown, otherwise, she needs to answer in Filipino with an interpreter. Like what Molly Isler did in 2013. But MJ has to be confident the way she answers the final question.

      • MJ can speak English pretty well but she is not concise and direct. That will bore the judges.

      • Answering in Filipino is definetely ok and not a problem at all Minorka…lol small thing..kaya ni MJ mapa English or Filipino at walang problema sa pag gamit ng sariling wika.
