  1. Umm. How about a costume inspired by the Subanen or T’bolis of Mindanao? It’s time to honor the indigenous people of the Philippines. Too much Spanish influence makes me sick. So, SUBANEN inspired costume please???

    • How about a Sinulog ball gown that uses Subanen fabrics, patterns and beadwork.. The whole ensemble will be attached with tiny Subanen brass bells in all the hems.. This costume would surely make a noise! *PEG: Charlene Gonzalez- MIss Universe Pageant 1994

  2. I got a new idea..

How about we merge the Filipiniana with the Sarimanok/haribon inspired costumes of the
Bench fashion show by Cary Santiago?

We could make it colorful sparkling and floor length with butterfly sleeves shaped like feathers/tiny wings.

We could create a headdress that artistically depicts our national symbols : the sun, the stars, waling-waling, anahaw, pearl, etc.

I hope our contestant will hold a sword but instead of the Hispanic escudo, she will be holding a Kalis/Kris.

*note : Prior to Singapore, we had the sea lion as a symbol since the Spanish era but ours is holding a sword.

    • LOL

btw, I want the color to be mainly Gold and Copper since since their a few of the TOP EXPORTS of our country.

It’s a way for us to help the currently suffering mining industry.

    • at kung mamari natin gawin ang iba pang kultura at tradisyon na humahango sa mga pista ng mga poon kagaya ng sinulog custome

  3. Here is my suggestion:
Headdress – Inspired by the famous Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo. Colorful gigantic feathers.
Dress – Inspired by the jaw dropping Sinulog Festival of Cebu. Elaborate ball gown with touch of Filipiniana.
Accessories – Inspired by Cordillera and Bagobo ethnic tribes.
Unitard – Inspired by early Filipino Pintados tattoo.
Hand piece – Inspired by the grand mardi gras of Masskara festival of Bacolod.

There are tons of artist in the Philippines who can create this. How about Mrs Araneta will launch a Philippine National Costume challenge for Miss Universe 2013? Calling all artist to create the best one and the winner will be worn by Arida. Proceeds will go to charitable works. This will create more awareness, use of talents and support to our rep.

    What do you think?

    • Nice suggestions you have there.

I’ve always dreamt of BPCI holding an annual competition for designers/artists to come up with National Costumes for our beauty queens. The Madame need not cough up big cash prizes for this one. The pride and honor of having one’s creative take put into form and used internationally should already be a priceless reward.

  4. I would love to see Ara wearing a similar costume worn by Zora Andam in MU 2001 or Charlene Gonzales in MU 1994. Another option would be an intricate design inspired by the Muslim royalties in Mindanao or a Fiesta-inspired terno.

  5. How about:
    1.Maria Makiling inspired.
    2.A Miriam Quiambao 1999 costume
    3. Sarimanok inspired ( it has to be fake feathers ) PETA is patrolling.
    4. Pahiyas festival inspired.
    5. Ati-atihan / Boracay festival inspired
    6. Santo Niรฑo festival inspired ( that’s IF, Inc will allow her )
    7. Gorgeous Terno designed by M. Cinco
    8. Darna
    9. Maskara festival inspired.
    10. Costume that promotes 7,107 islands.

    • LOL @ Darna

I love that idea. I thought about that too when Japan won before for their Anime Samurai costume. What better represent our culture than our national super hero, Darna. ๐Ÿ™‚ I just can’t figure if Ara should go with the 2 piece with boots costume or we should create a gown version. My idea is like a Goddess version of Darna. The 2 piece costume will be sculptured like lady gaga’s muscle dress http://gagafashionland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/gaga-leeroy-new.jpg. Another innovation here is a red almost trailing cape with sculptured shoulders that has the same design pattern as the Darna emblem. She will not be wearing the head cap but instead she will wear a tiara with a more intricate version of the Darna emblem on top of her wavy pageant hair full of volume. She will be wearing above the knee platform stiletto boots. The sash in between her legs will be gold instead of the usual white. It all sounds a bit tacky but It’s so in time with the super hero movies of Hollywood (Wonder woman) and it will definitely make her stand out.

      • I’m all for DARNA, para maiba naman at hindi boring, @Closer2fame design mo naaaaa!!!๎€ฐ

      • @Closer2Fame

I can imagine your idea and I think it’s briliant!!!! I am also tired of the traditional Filipiniana and it’s about time that we create something more refreshing. Darna is someone who inspired Filipinos of all generations . She is someone who best describes the modern Filipina. What better tribute to the “Father of Philippine Comics” than a national costume inspired by Darna. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darna

The intricately sculptured shoulders should be big enough to make a statement and it should echo the emblem. Ara’s thick jet black hair plus maybe add some gold hair extensions only around the crown would be perfect when curled as one. A bra that echos the emblem would also make it more interesting. I want to change the cape’s fabric material into something that would look more out of this world. It should be light but thick, distressed and deconstructed along the edges with the creases accented with gold sugar beads. The gold trims and the stars of the original costume would be replaced by yellow and gold sugar beads. It’s going to be stellar! ๐Ÿ™‚

      • @Marcus

Thanks. I already accepted this is all just wishful thinking. I hope @Norman would consider creating another post about it… hahaha

        @Norman

Is it OK if you create a post with a list of all our suggestions?.. Maybe you could create a poll or something.hehehe
        ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. I love what Marcus mentioned about her Maria Clara National Costume with a modern twist. It inspired my own slightly revised version of his with the following PEGS:

    1. Miss Philippines Earth 2013- Nagcarlan’s national costume http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad39/kattera09/Miss%20Philippines%20Earth%202013/Nagcarlan_zps4bd2f957.jpg

    2. Catherine Zeta Jones in “The Mask of Zorro- http://cineplex.media.baselineresearch.com/images/293092/293092_large.jpg

    3. Venus Raj wearing Theresa Licaros’ national costume at Miss Universe 2007 – http://i54.tinypic.com/jrwheu.jpg

    4. The History of Alaminos http://www.alaminoslaguna.gov.ph/index.php/about-alaminos/history-alaminos

    5. Fruit exports of Nagcarlan – Rambutans and Lanzones

    6. HIbiscus hybrid- Ariella Arida

    7. Binibining Pilipinas Gold 2013

    • Correction: Fruit exports of Alaminos – Coconuts, Rambutans and Lanzones

    • @Closer2Fame

Thanks! Miss Philippines Earth 2013- Nagcarlanโ€™s national costume was also my inspiration.

  7. If you saw the painting of Fernando Amorsolo’s Princess Urduja, that would be great.

      • Bud? can you clear up something? National Costume meaning “one” costume that represents a nation as one. How come there are different interpretations/inspirations? Like “maria clara (borrowing from Closer@fame) , urduja (borrowing from chief) , sarimanok (borrowing from Pinaygem), on and on and on …. is there an identity crisis when it comes to which/what national costume that represents Philippines ?

      • Identity crisis? I think not. That’s where creativity and cultural diversity play an important role. People get tired of seeing the same concept utilized year after year. It gives our national costume more refreshing takes, and at the same time, pay tribute to the lesser-known aspects of our heritage. Thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • ok bud, how bout she will be in a BIG white dough, like a siopao inspired, my fav bolabola siopao, that would be tacky huh ?

      • um…on her forehead? maybe? .. Oh no! she will be mistaken as miss India ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Another idea. Since she is so proud of being from UP why not an OBLATION costume. Tipid pa! Fig leaf lang!

  9. @Marcus under Ara’s hibiscus had a stunning idea for a national costume which incorporated the hibiscus named after Ara.

    • @Philip Bobby Advincula de la Torre Senior

Thanks! One of closer2fame’s pegs gave me an idea.. Ara should have the Catherine Zeta Jone’s hair and make up in Zorro for the national costume round. but with a payoneta and fresh Waling-waling. http://cineplex.media.baselineresearch.com/images/293092/293092_large.jpg

I also want the tucked barong to expose the decolletage by having a large head opening but still bordered by the collar.

  10. I think an Igorot inspired costume is fitted for Ara.

Pitoy’s creations are good as well. He has a lot of ternos to choose from. Materials and design are authentic.

A Tinalak costume is also an option.

  11. I want a dress made up of zesto foil pack and a head dress weaved from water lilies.
May costume na ,mababawasan pa ang basura sa mga estero at sapa.

    Mula po sa Tondo,
Ang babaeng bumihag sa pihikan na puso at pumisil sa itlog ni Dingdong Dantes,
    Marian Makiling,69, Tondo!

  12. What’s Alaminos, Laguna known for? Maybe the costume design should reflect Ariella’s hometown. Just like Irene Esser, she grew up in a cocoa plantation, hence, her costume is a chocolate box inspired delight.

Maybe MPE should let Ariella borrow one of their costumes during the National Costume presentation.

  13. How about a costume inspired by the Iglesia ni Christo churches? I’m imagining a skirt based on the pointy architecture and of course it will be white.
Second idea is a REYNA ELENA COSTUME!

    • Or how about the Ifugao costume with the Bulul statue suggested by Norman above? Not sure if that might get Ara in trouble with her elders though.

  14. ANYTHING BUT A BARRAZA!

Janine’s costume by Pitoy Moreno was perfect. Although it wasn’t the most colorful or eye-catching, it was authentic, elegant and showed off Janine’s sexy curves.

  15. Our next best bet is to look at Pitoy’s collection… Janine wore a Pitoy creation and I think it works well- Charlene and Janine both did well in the MU wearing a Pitoy creation

I would suggest making a competition to dress our MU girl at least in the national costume like what happened once in Thailand. I would also suggest adopting an annual theme like Ms Venezuela… This would allow us to showcase our local culture like the Sinulog or the Massacara… But let’s be realistic with what SMA… Our next best bet is really the Pitoy gowns…. And that’s going to be marvelous Becoz he is a national artist and dress would be vintage and really expensive ๐Ÿ™‚

    • @jay. I agree. I hope they resurrect Pitoy’s creations as national costumes. What better way to honor a national artist than to show his works to the world.
