The different faces of Miss Universe Philippines Janine Tugonon
Looks-wise, Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon is no Venus Raj or Shamcey Supsup. In fact, her face is atypical of how our Miss Universe representatives looked like ever since Zorayda Andam in 2001. If at any, her mold is more leaned towards a Miriam Quiambao with strains of Nina Ricci Alagao in some ways. And it is for this reason that she stands out among the beauties of Miss Universe 2012 instead of conveniently “blending in”.

A couple of days back, I remember what the people from Chi commented about her register in front of the camera – Janine has a perfect face. I’m pretty sure the impression was based on how photographers/creative experts size up their subjects’ facial features and not the way a regular pageant enthusiast would be quickly enamored by a string of random photogenic snap shots. However which you look at it, every single candidate in this year’s roster has an ace or two up their sleeves – be it the face, body, personality or all.

At the end of the day, someone who stands out will always be better than the next lady who simply fits the look profile of the majority. Janine could be one of the former. She may not shoot to the top of an armchair judge’s rankings, but she will most likely be remembered (country-associated, if you will) more easily than a group of ladies who all look alike. 😉

I don’t want to be mean to Miss Indonesia, but Filipinos (and India) are the most globally appealing when it comes to beauties from Asia…I mean, you can group Miss Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Korea together, and each year, their delegates look the same. Miss Philippines on the other hand has several “homegrown” features…One year she can look Asian, another year aa mixture of Filipino/Spanish other, another brown Malay! I think one year one of those countries had a “half white-chinese” delegate and it didn’t look right.
What the Filipinos need to understand is that the “Chinese-pale faced-slanty eyed Kris Aquino look alike” contestants are not revered in the West, Europe or Latin America…It’s one dimensional. STAY AWAY from that look.. The last two Miss Philippines and Janine are examples of classic Island-Filipina beauty….NOT CHINESE…Filipinos are globally known to be passionate, kind hearted, generous and festive people….therefore THEY ARE NOT CHINESE! lol…
Janine has that striking beauty of Western/Asian/Malay mosaic -homegrowned- which the other countries mentioned just don’t have…
I would be shocked if Miss Philippines didn’t make the top 10, 5 or 3….

Look y’all…for whatever reason, inasmuch as the last two reps from the Philippines were drop dead beauties, this one stands out indeed! Since 1964, Philippines has had
:
– fourteen semi-finalists (65′, 66, 69, 72, 73 74, 75, 80, 84, 87, 92, 99, 10_
– seven finalists/runners-up ( 75, 80, 84, 94, 99, 10, 11) and
– two winners (1969, 1973)!
Norm, correct me if I’m wrong, but this has to be the best resume’ of any Asian rep to the Miss Universe pagaent, right? 1973 was soooooo long ago! It’s due and Janine just may do it !
Of any Oriental rep, yes. India has a mighty fine record as well. 🙂
Norman — Excluding India, I think Japan leads in the Asian rankings, followed by the Philippines with Thailand a distant third.

She’s never my bet. I don’t find her beauty a stand-out. I don;t like her styling, and I don’t think she knows what make-up suits her awkward facial features (except the cheeks). She’s the typical exotic Pinay that are found all over the world. If my pals are as tall as her, they prolly must be winning pageants by now. She’s not a shocker; just awkward neighbor-looking girl. Just saying. However, because the no. of gorgeous contestants seem to be lesser this year because the Latinas are mostly tacky (so to speak), she might place in the finals. Vegas and the massive Pinoy crowd might run riot if her name won’t get called.

I just voted (again) for Janine and there is a fourth picture there on “her site” and it’s not her. What gives?
That video clip of her during the photoshoot was stunning! Definitely, Janine is showing different styles. She can definitely change into something better and even better. Really can’t wait for the preliminary so we can see how she can draw the crowd. I am sure she’s intelligent enough to make something very memorable for all of us pageant fanatics.

As much as I love her and as much as I’ve voted for her, I’m still on the fence about her in this edition of MU. I’m waiting for the “AHA!!!” moment. I had that moment with both Venus and Shamcey at this point in their respective pageants. Haven’t had that yet with Janine but I’m still hoping…. She has transformed beautifully, she is more of a remembrance of the Miriam era than of the last two years and maybe that is what is throwing (and scarring) me. I want that “AHA!!!” moment to come soon, but I also trust her and her handlers to let that “AHA!!!” moment be unleashed at just the right time. I await…

Trust me, I’m not refusing to see her beauty. It’s that moment when she steps out of her shell and becomes the star that I know she has inside.

i must say i’m a fan also of janine’s facial bone structure. and it shows especially well when she do a straight face, not smiling. her look she projected during the photo shoot shown on the insider video proved it all! coupled with her knock out body and her skin tone makes her a real stand out!
For me, shes the best. And definitely she has a place for the miss universe 2012 not only for top 16 but rather down to top 5. This is not the time para punain ang weakness nya. Instead punain ang strength nya para masaya ang lahat. I believe she will make it because she is mentally awake and brainy. She is very ready to conquer the universe. Lets see.
