After the extended Holy Week break, I am finally ready to reveal my predictions for Bb. Pilipinas 2012. The Primer last Sunday night helped a lot in my assessment of the ladies. I graded them using three (3) categories: Beauty of Face (with a maximum score of 40 points), Beauty of Figure (with a maximum score of 40 points) and Personality (with a maximum score of 20 points) for a total of 100.
This is how my spreadsheet looked like after I scored all 30 Bb. Pilipinas 2012 Official Candidates in three areas:
Karen Gallman topped Face, Mary Jean Lastimosa aced Figure and Katrina Dimaranan was highest in Personality. After adding up all the numbers, I am happy that almost all my favorites made it. What amused me was #28 Marie Irisha Arcenas claiming the final spot in a tie with Elaine Kay Moll. But then again, gut-feel tells me that this Cebuana will make the cut. The seven-highest scoring candidates are so close to one another that – up to now – it could be anybody’s ballgame.
So based on the totals above, I was able to come up with my Top 12 ladies, ranked from highest to lowest (with assigned numbers used for order purposes in case of a tie), as follows:

My Top 12: (Top row L-R) Nicole Schmitz, Karen Gallman, Mary Jean Lastimosa Katrina Dimaranan; (Middle row L-R) Ma. Alicia Elena Ariosa, Patricia Lae Ejercitado, Janine Tugonon, Roxane Joy Jesalva; (Bottom row L-R) Sherlyn Gonzales, Jaine Hidalgo, Elaine Kay Moll, Marie Irisha Arcenas.
92 Nicole Schmitz (8)
91 Karen Gallman (1) tie
91 Mary Jean Lastimosa (9) tie
91 Katrina Dimaranan (13) tie
90 Ma. Alicia Elena Ariosa (6) tie
90 Patricia Lae Ejercitado (7) tie
90 Janine Tugonon (18) tie
88 Roxane Joy Jesalva (19)
88 Sherlyn Gonzales (30)
87 Jaine Hidalgo (4)
86 Elaine Kay Moll (15)
86 Marie Irisha Arcenas (28)
From the dozen ladies who made my first cut, I am now applying one more factor – ‘Personal Whim’ – that should cover my preferences among the ones who scored a total of 90 and above. Due to the very close race, this ‘Personal Whim’ is in the form of stars that I will award to the girls who I strongly deem are most appropriate for each of the four (4) international competitions where the winners will be fielded in – Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Tourism Queen International and Miss Supranational.
Seven contenders are graded 90 and above. And I am now giving my Personal Whim stars to the following:
Four stars to Katrina Dimaranan as I see her the best bet for Miss Universe 2012 which may just be scheduled in Las Vegas in December. This 18 year-old is easily the most malleable in terms of training and can have her body shaped to everyone’s liking in due time. Her superb fluency in English adds great icing on the cake so to speak. And to top it all, she has this unique face that exudes exotic features hard to forget.
Three stars to Nicole Schmitz because she is a perfect fit for Miss International 2012 to be held in China. At 24, this Fil-German stunner has all the qualities that will definitely be pedestalled by the organizers. With her beautiful face, easy vibe and competitive spirit combined, there is no way she won’t top the Asians right away. From there, she can target the rest of the competition and do better than all her local predecessors, possibly gun for the achievement of Precious Lara Quigaman in the process.
Two stars to Karen Gallman since this beauty is just right for Miss Tourism Queen International 2012 to be hosted once more by China. In a way, I surprised myself upon seeing her ranking high after tallying the scores. But it was such a pleasant surprise. Just like Nicole Schmitz, this doll-faced 19 year-old can survive the onslaught of competition in China. Petite height notwithstanding, she can breeze through the heart of the locals and charm everyone with what she does best – being herself!
And one star to Mary Jean Lastimosa who I can visualize as tailor-made for Miss Supranational 2012 in Poland. This one’s a no-brainer. MJ is, quite simply, the best candidate to be sent to Central Europe. She will definitely create a stir with her va-va-voom body as well as effortlessly stand out among the Caucasian blondes and Latina brunettes. Some camps may be disappointed that I placed her in this slot instead of Miss Universe. But I firmly believe that she will be in her best elements in Supra. Besides, wouldn’t it be just as fulfilling to be the first Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational and – fingers-crossed – the first Filipina Miss Supranational?
Janine Tugonon is my choice as 1st Runner-Up – matching her finish last year, but with the strong possibility of representing us in a fifth international competition (Globe or Maja maybe?) that has also been rumored to be a fresh announcement during the finals.
Lastly, Patricia Lae Ejercitado is my 2nd Runner-Up to complete the Magic 6. She can also be considered for one of the second-tier pageants abroad where she can compete with confidence.
So there. After weeks upon weeks of observing, analyzing and listening to the girls, I’m glad my armchair-judging is now complete.
Time to hear yours! 😀

Thanks for your predictions Norman. Although I am rooting for #19 Roxane Jesalva, I am happy that you have presented to us your own predictions. I’ll support whoever represents the country in the International pageants. Kudos Norman! 🙂
You’re welcome, foxy girl! 😉
To Norman,
I’m sorry for my comment about your vision. Anyway this is only predictions I myself also is predicting who will win. Thanks.
Apology accepted, Mark. Let’s all be glad and optimistic that our problem is not being united in our choices. It goes to show how excellent this batch has turned out to be after all the initial doubts we may have harbored. 😉
Yehey, bati na sina Mark at Kuya Norms.
Sana ganun rin sina Anabelle at Amalia para may WORLD PEACE na!

Choleng Katigbak, 25, Novaliches Fishport,Philippines!.
Polls have been all over social networking already since Bb Pilipinas fever started especially in FB where there’s functionality to do surveys. By sampling, data may be skewed to say it is people’s choice! Just a thought.
Instead of having a lìst of our faves,Kuya Norman would you please make a poll?thanks
I’m actually thinking of that just before you replied. 😉
Hi Norman! Here’s my top 12 in any order. Used your 40-40-20 (face, body and personality) scheme as well. Quite delighted with the outcome of the numerical scheme. Let me know your thoughts.
1. Karen Gallman
4. Jaine Hidalgo
6. Allen Ariosa
7. Patricia Ejercitado
8. Nicole Schmitz
9. MJ Lastimosa
13. Katrina Dimaranan
16. Liezl Alcantara
18. Janine Tugonon
19. Roxane Jesalva
26. Angelee de los Reyes
30. Sherlyn Gonzales
Love it, Markus. We have 10 similar choices and differed only on the last two spots. 😉
Thanks. Can’t wait for the finals. I made some of my friends use your scheme as well as opposed to just overall impression.
3 of my favorites are in your top 4..katrina,nicole s. and gallman…janine is the other, but you lìsted her in runner up..
That’s good to know, chief. 🙂
I don’t agree with the Miss Universe and Tourism International choices, I think MJ has what it takes to represent our country in Miss U. Katrina?I don’t see anything special in her. If we talk about good communication skills?well for me It’s not an issue we have sent many intelligent candidates internationally what happened? some didn’t even reach the semifinal round. Shamcey is an exception to that because she knows how to carry herself and she is beautiful but Katrina? I’d rather choose Tugonon over her. But this is only predictions let us see what will happen to the finals!!lots of surprises will happen. I’m still hoping MJ will win Miss Phils. Universe this time.
This year’s results could really go in many directions. And that’s what makes it more interesting.
Gloria Lawit-wit Ampatuan
Oh diba ang ganda!
Gloria Lawit-wit Ampatuan, 25, Tondo,Philippines!
you guys are hilarious! 😉
Norman, are your vision 20/20 🙂
I think 20/200!!! Imagine Katrina and Gallaman in the top? Katrina???her face and body is only for local pageant no for your international competition, Gallman????too short anf too fat she doesn’t fit to represent our country. Predictions can be bias sometimes.
Let’s not even go there, Mark. You don’t have to be all smart-alecky and pick on my vision (hopefully you’re saying it in jest). I don’t mind people criticizing the content of my posts, but let’s not get personal, okay? 😉
And you’re talking about being biased? Hey, these are all subjective predictions. Nobody shares their personal picks based solely on how another individual looks at the girls. If people are second-guessing the results by consulting only on who is popular among the majority, then why give fearless predictions at all? If I get a lot of flak for not getting anything right with my forecasts, then so be it.
Mark, tone it down, Dude. No need to be rude. Katrina and Gallman are contenders–not country representatives (yet). I give kudos to every one of these women who not only have to convince themselves that they are worthy, pretty, and smart enough to go out for Bb Pilipinas, but they also have to develop a thickened exterior to the many eyes, wagging mouths, and quick-to-pass judgment calls made by the rest of us. I suppose these gals know that it’s just part and parcel to joining such a prestigious pageant. But, let’s not, as devoted followers, be so closed off to the opinions of others in regards to their favorites to win crowns this year. I’ve been following Norm’s blog long enough to know that he carefully and respectfully considers the attributes of all candidates, without once abusing, denigrating, slandering, and disparaging any of these women or any of those who post comments/opinions regarding his blog/s. I, on the other hand, am not so forgiving, and I’ll call it as I see it. No need to get personal now, Mark. Pare, just turn it down and kool ka lang.
i for one doesn’t believe that kat dimaranan is perfect for the bb pilipinas universe title. i’m rooting for ms janine taguntong to win this crown but i respect koyang norms opinion on this. mark, it is his personal opinion. intiende? i bet whether you accept it or not, it doesn’t matter to him. ang sagot dapat sa iyo ni koyang norms sa mnaldita mong blog ay ma and pa…malay ko, pakialam ko sa yo…etchos ka! and besides all people even you, and i can assure you this, have some form of bias perception to one another. one major case in point, when you see your reflection on the mirror, di ba napapangitan ka.
Okay, hold your horses, guys. Let’s all respect each other’s picks. I don’t nitpick at those who support other ladies because we all have our own say. And I’m not even giving my predictions to influence others. I would salute the person who can predict the results 100% because this is such a free-for-all competition. 😉
Norman — I’m with you. Supporting a candidate doesn’t mean you have to trash the others. One can also be passionate about it without being foul-mouthed, rude or vulgar.

LOL!
Norman — You mentioned that there’s a possibility that the Miss Universe pageant will be held in Las Vegas. If that is true (which I hope it is), this venue will be a big plus for the Philippines’ candidate. The presence of a large Filipino community in Las Vegas will brighten the spotlight on her, as it did for Venus Raj when she competed for the title in Las Vegas in 2010.
True, and even the ones from California will add up to the big numbers.
Norman — I like your choices, but I do have a couple of questions. How did you decide on the numerical scoring according to face (40 points maximum), body (40 points maximum) and personality (20 points maximum). This consequently gives facial beauty and body a hefty percentile weight of 80% of a candidate’s total score as opposed to only 20% percentile weight for a candidate’s personality (which I assume includes interview skills and subjective qualities such as confidence and poise). Is there a reason why you didn’t give these three qualitative standards equal weight (33.33%, or 33 points maximum for each)? And if face, body and personality had equal weight in which you rated the candidates, do you think the names of your top 12 would change?
Glenn, I gave more weight to Beauty of Face and Figure because it has been my practice ever since I started following pageants, especially the time when former Beauty Journalist Doris Nuyda mentored my mind on the same. The two areas are crucial before I add up the personality/interview impressions. If I allocated equal percentages to each instead, it would’ve still yielded practically the same set of winners since Katrina, Karen and Nicole S. scored high on the 3rd. MJ for me is unshakable for Supranational. 🙂
Norman — Thanks.
Hi Norman!
I’m not really a fan of Katrina Dimaranan but I wouldn’t mind her winning the BBPUniverse title. For some reason, she reminds me of starlet Alicia Mayer mixed with Shamcey’s aura – I don’t know, I guess that’s a good thing. I’m glad that Sherlyn and Jesalva made your final Top 12 because they’re actually part of my list as well. – will be getting back on your list after the coronation night. it’d be fun to see who actually made it. By the way, will you be watching the pageant live? – I already bought an upper boxB tix – uber excited for this coming Sunday!!! 🙂
Cheers!
I’m still uncertain if I can watch it live because of a previous engagement that might finish late. But we’ll see. 😉
donnie, miss international is not particular about height. maybe before, a long time ago. the last miss international from the philippines is lara quigaman. i don’t think she’s tall.
Here are my personal bets for each title, in random order:
UNIVERSE
Gina Joy Howell – a sweet face that will stand out from fierce beauties, height, figure, smooth skin, confident wit
Nicole Schmitz – universal beauty, figure, pr skills, okay height
Katrina Dimaranan – exotic beauty, height, pr skills
INTERNATIONAL
Gina Joy Howell – a pretty face that is so Miss Internationallike, smooth skin, slender figure, height
Patricia Lae Ejercitado – super gorgeous, super beautiful face, great figure, attractive brown complexion
Nicole Schmitz – perfect face for the title, perfect figure, attractive brown complexion
Karen Gallman – beautiful face, period
TOURISM
Mia Arcenas – oriental beauty, sexy body, excellent pr skill for tourism owing to her wit
Janine Tugonon – fierce oriental look, x-factor
Nicole Schmitz – appealing face, great tourism spokesperson owing to her communication skills
Gina Joy Howell – lovely face, oriental body, flawless skin, height, confident ability to speak
SUPRANATIONAL
Patricia Lae Ejercitado – beautiful face, great body, okay height, exotic complexion
Nicole Schmitz – attractive face, excellent body, okay height, great pr skills
Gina Joy Howell – demure face that will stand out from her fierce counterparts, height, conservatively great figure, skin so soft
Janine Tugonon – oriental beauty, x-factor, a good mixer
agree ako para kay gina howell, kasi matangkad siya, 5’9″, maganda ang mukha, makinis ang kutis, at magaling magsalita. yung iba, mukha at talino lang, pero kulang ng height, so medyo alanganin sa packaging. si gina howell kasi, nasa kanya na lahat, so safe na safe siya. kunting polishing lang ang kailangan. the others kasi, kahit no need na sa polishing yung intelligence at personality and styling nila, pero yung height nila hindi madala sa kahit anung klaseng polishing. so, dun nalang tayo sa safe. salamat po…
we have the same choice for Universe – Kat Dimaranan…but my International is Ellaine Moll bcoz i remember Melanie and Gemma cruz’s towering heights were a factor in winning Ms. International…my BBP Tourism – MJ Lastimosa and my Supranational – J Tugonon…
I would like to make believe that Katrina is good enough, but their also other ladies that are worthy of the crown like Patricia,Janine,Gloda or Eliane., predictions are good to spice up the pageant world.
Nicole S. is definitely the best choice for Miss International.
I don’t know about Katrina for Miss U. though. Don’t get me wrong, I had been and still a fan of Katrina, and I really wanted to want her represent us in Miss Universe but I still have my reservations; I can’t really figure out what it is. Maybe she’s too young and somehow that reflected in her presentation? She appeared too disciplined perhaps. (If only the Miss Philippines World was up for grab, Katrina would be the perfect fit.) I think Janine is a better choice for Miss U, but not a tad more than Katrina. So I’ll be happy either way.
Anyways here’s my top 4 bet. All of them are in your top 6 list. I only listed 4 because they’re the only ones that have great potentials representing us in international pageant.
– Katrina
– Janine
– Nicole S
– Patricia
Thanks for sharing, Asian. 😉
On Dimaranan – maybe I’m just being mean but I really don’t see a round-faced girl winning the Universe crown. No amount of training could change the natural shape of one’s head. I guess that same fact applies to Ejercitado, another so-called frontrunner.
I don’t care about the height issue. Beautiful faces should be sent to international competitions. I know my predictions would seem unlikely but in a perfectly unbiased world, they’d definitely win this BEAUTY pageant:
Universe – Gonzales
International- Forbes/Gallman
Tourism- Howell
Hands down, these are the best girls in this batch, facially. I don’t get the hype around Ejercitado, Schmitz and Lastimosa. I asked around my foreigner buddies and none of them found any of those aforementioned girls even remotely attractive. Sorry.
Thanks for sharing your picks! 😉
i actually find Katrina’s face beautiful. so to each his own. I suppose a beautiful face counts, but judging by the recent winners in the major international pageants, the most beautiful face hardly ever wins. Body proportions, height, etc., have as much weight as facial beauty in most cases. Then there are other factors such as the candidate’s communication skills, confidence, intelligence which although can’t be measured by specific standards quantifiably, these subjective qualities certainly play a significant role in the judges’ decision. Each of us have our own subjective impression of what beauty is, and our impression of each candidate is determined by an infinite number of personal and objective factors. Although I can’t speak for your “foreigner buddies” who you say didn’t find any of Norman’s choices “remotely attractive”, my American buddies here in Napa, California, definitely think they are beautiful. But your comments leave open these questions — why should a foreigner’s opinion matter? Are you implying that Philippine candidates be chosen by foreigners’ standards? My reply is this: foreigner’s tastes in beauty is as personal and individual as everyone’s personal taste. There are literally hundreds of ethnic and cultural groups, each of which have their own standards of beauty. Filipinos should choose their beauty queens according to their own vision of beauty — and not tailor it to suit “foreign” standards. : )
Absolutely correct, Glenn! Filipinas are beautiful and they don’t need to fit into the standards of the foreigners just for them to be satisfactory to the eyes of these critics who don’t understand what a real beuty is.
Truly like your choices for top 12 except perhaps for Mia and Elaine.
Thanks, Frankie. At least I met 10 of them. 😉
Norman — Great choices! I agree. Katrina Dimaranan would be the best choice to represent the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant. She will have 7 months to prepare which is enough time to further transform this 18-year old beauty into a serious international contender.
Thanks, glenn. The December dates for MU made all the difference.
Norman — A few weeks ago, the predictions were pointing to MJ, Nicole Schmitz or Patricia for the plum title — isn’t it interesting how Katrina seemed to have come up from behind and is now leader of the pack? This makes for a very good case study.
Indeed. Katrina is slowly but surely inching her way up the ladder. One reason could be the fact that she left a very good impression during the Primer. I’m sure there are other factors contributing to the same, but I’m glad things are turning out this way.
Great selections Kuya Norman, but I would be happier seeing Liezl Alcantara and Gina Joy Howell in the top 12 replacing Ellaine Mohl and Mia Arcenas.
DIMARANAN-Universe
SCHMITZ-International
GALLMAN-MTQI
EJERCITADO-Supranational
TUGONON-1st R-U
ALCANTARA-2nd R-U
Thanks, basil. Dapat talaga Top 20 na ginawa ko, but that would be extra cruel.
Is it the practice of BB Charities to automatically place the highest scored candidate as our rep to the Miss U Pageant, the second to Miss International, the third to Miss Tourism Queen International, and the fourth to Miss Supranational? I just think that once you whittle down the girls to the Top 12, and then Top 6, then the Top 4 should be placed not by their rankings, but by their chances and “fit” with whatever international competition they can best be competitive in. Is that what really happens? For me, Norm, I think MJ is a strong contender for a crown, but I, too, believe she’ll be a force to be reckoned with at either the Miss U (which I still believe, with her height, puts her at a disadvantage) or the Miss Supranational Pageant. I’m not really sure where Katrina D. fits. I think she has the communication skills and personality for MIss Universe, but while her face is exotic, her features are a little strong. (To me, kasi, I think she has a wide face, but this is not meant to disparage her. Same with Patricia E. Her forehead is quite pronounced, but again, this isn’t mean to disparage her either. I just don’t think they fit the Trump ideal, and he has some sway in the way things go as we all know.) Methinks Katrina will represent PI well as Bb. Tourism. I think that Janine Tugonon can still represent PI well at the MIss U, and she’s still got a few months to ready herself for the Miss U Pageant. Nicole will be a GREAT representative at the Miss International Pageant and has the best chance of all the Bb. candidates to win there. I think the surprise of the evening will be Sherlyn Gonzales—if (and only if) she turns up the fierceness. She’s naturally blessed with good looks, but it’ll be up to her to break into the Top 6. The two runner-up positions are all up for grabs. All in all, I am not in complete disagreement with your picks, Norm. It’s just gonna have to come down to coronation night and which candidates will shine brightest. Hindi natin talaga alam, right?
When BPCI still held the MW franchise, the common practice was for Madame Stella to recommend the placements of the Top 3 to the judges come final deliberation. As a result, the top scorer doesn’t automatically get Universe since all titles are of equal importance.
Norman….. your top 4 choices are also mine. SILA NA NGANG APAT, NICOLE SCHMITZ, KATRINA, KAREN AND MJ…. WALA NANG IBA!… Well few more nights to sleep…..
im super excited…agree ako sa predictions but not for miss u, i think mia arcenas no. 28 will snatch the spot light…
At least she’s in my Top 12, nice. 😉
xoxo mau aba imbiernakish xoxo
Mau, at the back of my head, Janine remains a solid contender. 😉
