Thailand’s National Costume for Miss Universe 2011: A winner or not?

The Norasingh-inspired National Costume to be worn by Miss Thailand-Universe Chanyasorn Sakornchan in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Will Thailand win another Miss Universe Special Award for National Costume via Chanyasorn “Fah” Sakornchan? Gut feel tells me that another country might clinch the same for 2011.

The photo above shows the Norasingh-inspired creation that will be paraded in Sao Paulo. And while I like everything that I see from Fah’s shoulders & up, everything from the bra top & below is – in my opinion – not a very successful fusion of the modern and the traditional.

The bra top, for one, is a bit tacky for my taste. It reminds me of one of Madonna’s Gaultier-created stage costume during the 90s, though without the pointed tips which have been flattened to look like circular gold icings on top of a cupcake. And what remains of the supposed tail of the half-human, half-lion Norasingh is now a figurative take in the form of a gold oversized table runner with one end tightly wrapped and knotted around Fah’s waist and the other end flowing like a wedding train that can be played with while gliding down the stage. The footwear is high-heeled punkish and not the most graceful to walk with.

I feel that 50% of the design was overthought or the whole thing was collaborated upon by several designers who strapped together their respective contributions to the finished product. Sometimes, creativity need not be boundless, especially if the designer/s can’t seem to achieve satisfaction after sleeping over what has already been finished or finalized the day before.

Anyways, I still believe that this National Costume will be a contender. The very regal headdress and the inverted golden arch resting on Fah’s collarbone to frame her beautiful face are winners. 😉
