“The King’s Speech” has already harvested one award after another. It has gained Golden Globe nods for acting and is now nominated for 12 Oscar Awards (which will be handed out next month). My question is….how familiar are you with the Tom Hooper-directed movie? It’s not one of those highly commercial flicks that get exhibited in wide release, but something that grows on you and lingers long after watching the same.
According to Moviefone, here’s the plot of “The King’s Speech”: After the death of his father King George V (Michael Gambon) and the scandalous abdication of King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth) who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle.
Colin Firth’s portrayal is just outstanding. I reckon that he will take home the Academy Award for Best Actor. Not to be outdone, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham-Carter contributed brilliant turns as the speech therapist and Elizabeth, respectively.
Watch the movie when you get the chance because you won’t regret it.
I highly recommend the Black Swan as well! I enjoyed that much more than the King’s Speech. 🙂
I liked both actually.
