Looking forward to this coming Saturday (January 29) for the announcement of the 24 Official Candidates for 2011. This year’s batch is sure to be one of the best! 😉
These photos are just a sampling of the ladies who received their callbacks for the screening last weekend at the Gateway Suites. So far, so good. But I wouldn’t single out my favorites yet.

More gorgeous ladies for 2011! The Bb. Pilipinas 2011 screening last weekend was a successful affair as beautiful Filipinas flooded the BPCI screening venue at Araneta Center.
Armchair judges, time to check them out! See for yourself the best of the bunch so far. 😉
Supermodel of the World 2010 winners (L-R) Lithuania (r.u.), Philippines (winner), Poland (r.u.)
Danica Flores Magpantay won the Supermodel of the World 2010 competition in New York City. She is the first Filipina to ever reach the top of this modelling contest after near recent wins by Charlene Almarvez (1st RU last year), Charo Ronquillo (2nd RU a few years back) and Giselle Paqueo (Top 8). Danica, who is the daughter of model Lala Flores – herself a Supermodel of the World candidate in the 90s – is joined in the Top 3 by the runners-up from Lithuania and Poland.

‘Silence of the Lambs’ is one of my all-time favorite thrillers. What sets this 1991 movie apart is the presence of Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster who both won Academy Awards for their work in the movie, aside from getting the Best Picture and Best Director (Jonathan Demme) nods. Fast forward to 2011 and a new supernatural-drama-thriller starring Anthony Hopkins is in the can and will open this coming January 28 in the US.
“The Rite” is inspired by true events. It follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) , who introduces him to the darker side of his faith. Directed by Mikael Hafstroem (1408), The Rite is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the devil’s reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth.
True, Anthony Hopkins plays a priest character, but he still evokes the creepiness associated with Dr. Hannibal Lecter – a role that made him famous around the world. And I’ll surely be watching this one. I’m such a sucker for horror flicks that look well-made and well-acted. This one should fit the bill.
“The Rite” is from Warner Brothers. It is directed by Mikael Hafstroem from a screenplay adaptation by Michael Petroni and Matt Baglio. It stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Rutger Hauer and Ciaran Hinds.
Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills
Next Tuesday, January 25, Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills will set foot in the Philippines together with MWO (Miss World Organization) Head Julia Morley to attend the formal contract signing with Cory Quirino – the new Philippine franchise holder of the biggest global beauty pageant. It will be remembered that BPCI (Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc.) took charge of sending local representatives to the Miss World from 1992-2010 and can be credited for a number of respectable placements in the competition such as 2nd Princess in 1993 (Ruffa Gutierrez); Top 5 in 2003 (Mafae Yunon) & 2004 (Karla Bautista); Top 10 in 2002 (Kate Manalo) & 1994 (Cara Subijano); and Top 15 in 2005 (Carlene Aguilar).
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Cory Quirino’s Fusion Excel group can eclipse BPCI’s performance and finally produce the Philippines’ first Miss World titleholder. 😉
Michael Copon in Philippine movies & TV...why not?
Remember Michael Copon? He’s the Fil-American guy who landed the role of Felix Taggaro in the series “One Tree Hill” and guested in shows like CSI: Miami, Greek and Hawaii Five-O. He was also a series regular as Vin Keahi in “Beyond the Break”.
Don’t look now, but the guy is planning to invade local showbiz. Jonas Gaffud of Mercator Model Management (responsible for the careers of Brazilian-Japanese hunks Akihiro Sato, Fabio Ide & Daniel Matsunaga plus Survivor Season 1 Sole Survivor JC Tiuseco) tweeted that he will most likely be Michael’s Philippine handler. And this should be a big challenge because the guy doesn’t speak Tagalog, well maybe a little but not enough to make him credible outside of balikbayan roles on TV. This should be his first major homework.
Competition is already stiff but new faces will always be welcome to join the scene. Let’s see how things will work out for him. 😉
