Supermodel of the World 2010 winners (L-R) Lithuania (r.u.), Philippines (winner), Poland (r.u.)
Danica Flores Magpantay won the Supermodel of the World 2010 competition in New York City. She is the first Filipina to ever reach the top of this modelling contest after near recent wins by Charlene Almarvez (1st RU last year), Charo Ronquillo (2nd RU a few years back) and Giselle Paqueo (Top 8). Danica, who is the daughter of model Lala Flores – herself a Supermodel of the World candidate in the 90s – is joined in the Top 3 by the runners-up from Lithuania and Poland.

‘Silence of the Lambs’ is one of my all-time favorite thrillers. What sets this 1991 movie apart is the presence of Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster who both won Academy Awards for their work in the movie, aside from getting the Best Picture and Best Director (Jonathan Demme) nods. Fast forward to 2011 and a new supernatural-drama-thriller starring Anthony Hopkins is in the can and will open this coming January 28 in the US.
“The Rite” is inspired by true events. It follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) , who introduces him to the darker side of his faith. Directed by Mikael Hafstroem (1408), The Rite is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the devil’s reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth.
True, Anthony Hopkins plays a priest character, but he still evokes the creepiness associated with Dr. Hannibal Lecter – a role that made him famous around the world. And I’ll surely be watching this one. I’m such a sucker for horror flicks that look well-made and well-acted. This one should fit the bill.
“The Rite” is from Warner Brothers. It is directed by Mikael Hafstroem from a screenplay adaptation by Michael Petroni and Matt Baglio. It stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Rutger Hauer and Ciaran Hinds.
Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills
Next Tuesday, January 25, Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills will set foot in the Philippines together with MWO (Miss World Organization) Head Julia Morley to attend the formal contract signing with Cory Quirino – the new Philippine franchise holder of the biggest global beauty pageant. It will be remembered that BPCI (Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc.) took charge of sending local representatives to the Miss World from 1992-2010 and can be credited for a number of respectable placements in the competition such as 2nd Princess in 1993 (Ruffa Gutierrez); Top 5 in 2003 (Mafae Yunon) & 2004 (Karla Bautista); Top 10 in 2002 (Kate Manalo) & 1994 (Cara Subijano); and Top 15 in 2005 (Carlene Aguilar).
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Cory Quirino’s Fusion Excel group can eclipse BPCI’s performance and finally produce the Philippines’ first Miss World titleholder. 😉
Michael Copon in Philippine movies & TV...why not?
Remember Michael Copon? He’s the Fil-American guy who landed the role of Felix Taggaro in the series “One Tree Hill” and guested in shows like CSI: Miami, Greek and Hawaii Five-O. He was also a series regular as Vin Keahi in “Beyond the Break”.
Don’t look now, but the guy is planning to invade local showbiz. Jonas Gaffud of Mercator Model Management (responsible for the careers of Brazilian-Japanese hunks Akihiro Sato, Fabio Ide & Daniel Matsunaga plus Survivor Season 1 Sole Survivor JC Tiuseco) tweeted that he will most likely be Michael’s Philippine handler. And this should be a big challenge because the guy doesn’t speak Tagalog, well maybe a little but not enough to make him credible outside of balikbayan roles on TV. This should be his first major homework.
Competition is already stiff but new faces will always be welcome to join the scene. Let’s see how things will work out for him. 😉
Ophiuchus : The 13th sign of the Zodiac
Okay, maybe I’m over-acting a bit with my blog title because my Zodiac sign of Leo still remains as is (thank God!) but look at the new dates of the 13 Zodiac signs and yours may likely be a new one now:
Capricorn: Jan. 20 – Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 – March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18- May 13
Taurus: May 13- June 21
Gemini: June 21- July 20
Cancer: July 20- Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10- Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16- Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30- Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23- Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29- Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17- Jan. 20
For members of my family, there are changes galore! My mom is now an Aries. My brother and sister are now Leos, just like me. And my other sister is now a Virgo. And what’s with the very short period for Scorpios? Only a week?
Anyways, I’m not keen about Ophiuchus joining the fray. But since my sign remained unchanged, all I can do is look around and see the reactions of individuals who have shifted to a new one – not that it matters much.
How about you, dear readers? Are you now a disciple of Ophiuchus? 😉
The gorgeous Ariana Manibog Valera
This is purely wishful thinking on my part. But if Ariana Manibog Valera decides to join Bb. Pilipinas 2011, then we’re really in for a hot hot competition this year! This outstanding Fil-Am beauty is the reigning Miss Asia USA. Based in the US, she should have completed the residency requirements first before qualifying for a candidate’s slot in the national finals. But if there are things I’m not privy to and she has met the demands of BPCI, then wouldn’t she be a bombshell of a Miss Universe candidate?
If her middle name sounds familiar, that’s because she is the niece of Bb. Pilipinas-International 1982 Lisa Manibog. She is also the niece of Miss Guam World 1987 Francel Maribel Manibog Caracol.
Ariana Manibog Valera is the reigning Miss Asia USA - smoldering hot!
I really wish she would be part of Bb. Pilipinas 2011. Otherwise, there will always be next year to consider.
But then again, wouldn’t it be fantastic if she’ll wear the Miss Philippines sash in Sao Paolo, Brazil? 😉
The Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. has found a new home after more than a decade of stay at GMA-7. From a Kapuso, it has turned into a Kapamilya, along with Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2010 Venus Raj. Binibining Pilipinas will now be seen on Channel 2, at least from 2011-2015.
And what does this mean? First off, Bb. Pilipinas 2011 will be beamed worldwide via TFC (The Filipino Channel), which should make its subscribers very happy. And this is one of the principal reasons stated by its head – Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta – when she made the move. She also wants to implement changes in the pageant. What these changes are, we can only find out when the coronation night unreels on April 10, 2011 – much later than the finale dates of previous years.
ABS-CBN will handle the production (and I expect brilliantly exciting changes), as well as telecast the Miss Universe 2011 live via satellite from Sao Paolo, Brazil on September 12, 2011.
Let’s see how the new partnership works out! 😉

I didn’t pay much attention to this video during the first minute, but at exactly 1:22, it started to really make me watch with some amazement at what these guys are trying to do.
The moral of the video? Walk more, drive less. If the distance is manageable by foot, then get your shoes off from the accelerator and do some legwork!
Walking is a great exercise, and it helps protect the environment as well! 😉
The Baker King on GMA-7; Monday-Friday at 10pm

I don’t usually get hooked on Koreanovelas. In fact, the last one I religiously watched was “Jewel in the Palace” and that was not because I loved period dramas. Food was one of the main focus of the whole thing. And since I love food, it took me only one episode to further spark my interest in watching the very looooong series.
And now comes “The Baker King“. In this one, bread is the center of attention. Who doesn’t enjoy watching breads being freshly-baked? I know I do. The series actually started airing last January 3 and I missed the whole first week. It’s a good thing GMA-7 replayed everything in one sitting and from that point on, I got myself glued to the LED screen every night at 10pm to follow the story of Kim Tak Goo.
The plot is not hard to follow, but there are some twists early on that make for delectable viewing. Kim Tak Goo is the bastard son of a bread magnate in Seoul. His mother forced him into the household of his biological father at an early age. He he was subjected to harsh treatment by his father’s wife and right-hand man, but even moreso by a half-brother who hates his presence. But not to be put down by such, he soon discovered his uncanny ability to spot/sniff the right ingredients to bake the best bread – a talent inherited from his father. The story evolves from there where I’m sure you’d be fond of the characters and follow them with much interest.
Here is the official trailer of the Koreanovela on GMA-7:

“The Baker King” is Korea’s highest-rating drama for 2010 and has reaped major TV awards ever since. Watch it on GMA-7 Telebabad from Monday-Friday at 10pm.
Sabrinne Al-Tawil during the Miss Friendship International 2010 in China.

Sabrinne Al-Tawil represented the Philippines in the Miss Friendship International 2010 in China where she made it to the Top 15. The experience must have been an unforgettable one for her such that she wants to make it to the bigger pageant stage in the global arena this time around.
Just last week, she made clear her intentions to join Binibining Pilipinas 2011 when she presented herself for screening at the Araneta Center. Together with a very competitive group of screenees, she stood out with her good height (5’9″), alluring smile and marked presence (her face reminds me of Abbygale Arenas). If and when she makes the cut to become one of the Official Candidates this year, then pageant followers will have a field day selecting their favorites for the crown.
Personally, I think she is a shoo-in for a slot. With a little more effort to slim down and give her a more curvaceous figure, she is well on her way to greater things as a beauty queen.
I am really looking forward to Bb. Pilipinas batch of 2011! 😉
