Being a tropical country, the Philippines has never and will never enjoy the sight of snow falling on the islands. And this is one of the many reasons why the country has not participated in the Winter Olympics, unless someone who trained abroad chooses to represent the Philippines in one. At any rate, there is a duo of Filipino-Americans playing for the USA in the current edition of the sports event in Vancouver, Canada. The Filipino-Polish American J.R. Celski is considered the next Apolo Anton Ohno for his prowess on the ice and his charisma off. At 19, he’s already a five-time medalist at the 2009 World Championships. He was the two-time U.S. Junior overall champion in 2007 and 2008. Just earlier this week, he snatched the Bronze in the 1500 Men’s Speed-skating Category. And then there is Amanda Evora, who has 100% Filipino lineage. Together with partner Mark Ladwig, she represented the US in the figure skating category. Although finishing only 10th, she showed so much heart and soul in her performance that experts are in unison when they stated that she has a very bright future in the sport.
I’m glad that these two Fil-Ams are doing well in the sport and making both the US and their Filipino kababayans proud of them.
