Ina Dominica Guerrero: an exotic MPE for a change?

Ina Dominica Guerrero - Miss Mun. of Daraga, Albay in Miss Philippines Earth 2012

Among the 48 Official Candidates of Miss Philippines Earth 2012, one lady easily stands out because of her beauty, styling and long curly tresses. Her name is Ina Dominica Guerrero, representing the Municipality of Daraga, Albay. The Management junior at Bicol University is another clear proof how beautiful and diverse the Bicolana women can be.

That said, do you guys think Carousel Productions is ready for a more exotic Miss Philippines Earth? We’ve already seen a number of mixed-racial winners (e.g. Karla Henry, Sandra Seifert, Tamera Marie Szijarto, Jeanne Harn and Laura Marie Dunlap) and fair-skinned ones (e.g. April Ross Perez, Carlene Aguilar and Psyche Resus), but never a darker beauty in the mold of Ina Dominica Guerrero above.

I, for one, would be happy having someone like her represent us in Miss Earth. But that would mean ignoring the fact the she is facing heavy competition from the more hyped and more environmentally articulate contenders in the batch. Let’s see if she can hold up her own when judgment time gets tough.

Dianne Dreyfus: In or out for Bb. Pilipinas 2012?

Another beauty-in-waiting, this Dianne Dreyfus. The 20 year-old student and commercial model is one more possible participant for Bb. Pilipinas 2012.

Dianne is currently training with one of the country’s top beauty camps in preparation for screening in the national pageant.

Although her name doesn’t ring a bell to most, the young discovery has been making her presence felt in the media the past year. She was chosen as one of the image models for Solara (as pictured on the left) – a swimwear line co-owned by former beauty queens Maggie Wilson and Sandra Seifert. Let’s wait and see if she will indeed enlist for Bb. Pilipinas 2012. For me, she is definitely ‘in’ as official candidate, and possibly more once I get to study her possibilities in the next few weeks. ;-)

Miss Philippines-Earth 2010 Kris Psyche Resus’ send-off to Miss Earth 2010

More than ready for Miss Earth 2010, Kris Psyche Resus is! (Photo credit: Melvin Sia of OPMB Worldwide)

Miss Philippines-Earth 2010 Kris Psyche Resus has the sole distinction of being the country’s representative to the first-ever Miss Earth to be hosted by another country. All roads lead to Nha Trang, Vietnam between now and December 4, by which time Miss Earth 2010 will have already been crowned by last year’s winner, Larissa Ramos of Brazil.

At Villa Immaculada in Intramuros, Manila, Carousel Productions hosted a formal send-off for Kris Psyche Resus. She is all set to leave for Vietnam to join more than 80 other ladies from all over the world to vie for the most unique and noteworthy international beauty pageant title – Miss Earth. She knows that the chances of becoming the 2nd Filipina to win Miss Earth are not the brightest (since the people behind it are all Filipinos and making another Miss Philippines get the crown in only 2 years’ time might not sit well with most), but she is extremely focused and determined to give it her best shot.

Personally, I will be pleased seeing her place as high as the Top 8, if not one of the court elementals in the Final 4. To say that she will be facing extremely tough competition would be an understatement because majority of the delegates have either been selected as representatives in Miss Earth-dedicated searches or as part of the winners’ circle in their biggest national finals. In fact, Osmel Sousa has already acquired the ME franchise for Venezuela which means that he will be sending over one of his thoroughbreds starting this year, with a formally-conferred Miss Venezuela-Earth 2011 (Caroline Medina) coming to Manila next year. This goes to show that the pageant is already being taken seriously by all participating countries.

Lending their moral support during Kris Psyche Resus' send-off were Miss Earth-Air 2009 Sandra Seifert (L) and Miss Earth 2008 Karla Henry (Photo credit: Melvin Sia of OPMB Worldwide)

Other well-wishers who graced the send-off were: (L) the gorgeous Miss Philippines-Air 2010 Emmerie Dale Cunanan and Miss Philippines-Eco-Tourism 2010 Angela Fernando (Photo credit: Melvin Sia of OPMB Worldwide)

Here’s wishing Kris Psyche Resus the best of luck in Miss Earth 2010! ;-)

John Reyes wins Mr. Philippines-Earth 2010 title

This is a belated post. Just days before the finals of Miss Philippines-Earth 2010, the selection of Mr. Philippines-Earth 2010 was held to coincide with the pre-pageant activities of the former. John Reyes, a 5’11″ 20 year-old fashion model and student of University of Santo Tomas, was proclaimed winner at the Concourse Plaza of Manila Ocean Park last April 22. I’m not definite yet if he will be fielded as the country’s bet to an international Mr. Earth competition, but will give updates in this blog.

John was awarded by reigning Miss Earth 2009 Larissa Ramos and Miss Philippines-Earth 2009 Sandra Seifert during the event.

Congratulations, John! ;-)

Bb. Pilipinas 2010 Focus: The Showbiz Edge

Beauty pageants are typically used by contestants and its winners as springboards to brighter career opportunities. For some, entering showbiz has become an inevitable proposition – much like previous Binibining Pilipinas winners like Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz, Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez, Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman, Maria Isabel Lopez, Joanne Santos (Quintas), Miriam Quiambao, Dindi Gallardo, Nina Ricci Alagao, Carlene Aguilar etc. So it doesn’t come very often when the reverse happens, i.e., someone already from showbiz joining the Binibining Pilipinas and winning a title (or placing in the Top 5) and then going back to the klieg lights of both TV and movies. Perhaps, it can be quite a risky move but not for the likes of Ruffa Gutierrez, Maggie Wilson, Rich Asuncion and even Sandra Seifert (who used to be a TV host before joining and backing out of Binibining Pilipinas and then rejoining the Miss Philippines-Earth and winning the same).

This year, one candidate stands out because of her very familiar face. Candidate #11, Krissa Mae Arietta Kleiner is already a permanent fixture in her home studio, GMA-7. She was initially the ‘Gobingo‘ girl of Arnel Ignacio when she started in the biz a couple of years back. From there, she went on to guest in several TV shows and regularly performed on Sunday’s SOP before landing full support roles in primetime shows like “Darna” and “Gagambino.” Following her fellow network colleague Rich Asuncion who joined and placed 1st Runner-Up in last year’s Binibining Pilipinas, she was groomed by the GMA Artist Center to be their bet this year. And for a good reason at that – Krissa Mae has excellent chances of actually bagging one of the crowns come March 6.

Although Krissa Mae is currently being tagged as the girlfirend of R&B Singer Jay-R, she continues to shine on her own given the fact that she has already paid a good chunk of her dues as a showbiz upstart. The 5’8″ Fil-American is serious about becoming a beauty queen. She believes that representing the Philippines in the international pageant arena is one way of paying homage and/or giving honor to one’s motherland.

I believe this girl has a lot to offer. In the talent competition of the pageant alone, she surprised everyone with her martial arts-themed song-and-dance number that might just net her the Miss Talent award. But more than this, Krissa Mae Kleiner has what it takes to join the troika of Binibining Pilipinas winners this year – not just because of her showbiz edge, but owing to the fact that she is beautiful, articulate, ever-smiling and more than ready to be one of the shining symbols of Filipina beauty in the global stage for 2010.

Good luck, Krissa Mae!

Miss Earth 2009 winners on the beach

A day after the finals night of Miss Earth 2009, the four elemental beauties who were crowned as winners headed for the pristine beach of Fairways & Bluewater in Boracay for a pictorial with the press. The ladies wore their two-piece swimwear and crowns, while giving out victorious smiles to the photographers around. Here are some of the shots taken.

The elemental beauties of Miss Earth 2009 flash their victorious smiles to the press.

ME09 Larissa Ramos handed Brazil its 2nd Miss Earth crown and is set to become this environmental spokesperson of Mother Earth for the next 365 days.

There's more to the earthiness of beautiful Larissa Ramos. She is smart and adventurous as well. This 20 year old will have her hands full as Miss Earth 2009.

Once more, congratulations to the winners!!! Boa sorte, Larissa!!!

Miss Earth 2009 Winners!

Here is the official list of winners in the recently-concluded Miss Earth 2009 at the Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center. The whole pageant had a very relaxed feel to it unlike in previous years. It helps that the venue is in the middle of a world-class beach which encouraged a more dress-down vibe.

Who will be crowned Miss Earth 2009 tonight?

Tonight will be the Coronation Night of Miss Earth 2009 at the Boracay Ecovillage Resort & Convention Center in the island of Boracay. The 80 official candidates have spent close to a month of promoting environmental awareness around the country, attending various functions, lending their presence to sponsors’ events, participating in the annual caravan which brought them to different key cities in the Philippines and endless bonding with the locals.

Who will win the title of Miss Earth 2009? Who will be named Miss Air, Miss Water and Miss Fire?

Here are my picks. Consider them my fearless forecast.

My Elemental Top 4

ME Spain Alejandra Echevarria

Alejandra started upping her momentum in the pageant early on, stepped up to the plate as one of the hot favorites and continues to do so without fail after landing the Top 15 in both swimsuit and evening gown preliminaries. Her captivating face has made many local pageant followers sit up and take notice of this senorita. If she plays her cards right, there’s a very excellent prospect that Spain will win its 1st Miss Earth crown.

ME Philippines Sandra Seifert

Will Sandra do a Stefania (Fernandez) and win the Miss Earth 2009 crown to score a back-to-back victory for the Philippines? It is a distinct possibility. She topped both swimsuit and evening gown preliminaries. Aside from that, she is articulate with a gift of gab so taking the responsibility of being an environmental spokesperson should come easy for our bet.

ME USA Amy Diaz

This Rhode Island native is the strongest American candidate the USA has sent for the past years that Miss Earth has been in existence. She has the elegant stride, friendly personality and sunny disposition that ooze with unbridled optimism. It also helps her cause that she is well-spoken and more than familiar with environmental issues around the world. Could this be the year for the USA to finally stamp its true class in the pageant?

ME Venezuela Jessica Barboza

The nice thing about Venezuela’s annual participation in Miss Earth is that they send candidates who are more relaxed and significantly less pageant-patty compared to the ones sent to Miss Universe or Miss World. This remains true with Jessica. She may not be as drop-dead gorgeous as, say, MU2008 Dayana Mendoza but this Law student definitely has the makings of a winner. If she makes it far in the finals, then it only means that she is not just beautiful but smart as well.

My Top 8

ME France Magalie Thierry

Magalie stands out effortlessly. Her doll-like features are more than enough to make heads turn. But it doesn’t stop there. Her whistle-bait figure adds more premium, on top of the more essential qualification she brings forth to the pageant – she is currently doing her Masteral studies in Biology-Ecology. Who could be a more commanding Miss Earth than a beautiful lady who has formal specialization in flora, fauna and other environmental concerns?

ME Cuba Jamillete Gaxiola

The other doll-like beauty in this year’s batch, Jamillete enthralls you with her striking facial features. She is the classic example of the fiery mestiza but with the extra of having the heart for charitable causes and the like. The locals are literally warming up to her and it comes as no surprise. Hers is the type that lingers without giving you the feeling of fullness.

ME Paraguay, Gabriela Rejala

No longer a newbie in pageants, Gabriela has the previous experience of wearing the Miss Paraguay sash (or tag if you will) in last year’s Miss World. This certainly adds up to her bearing and confidence. I may not see her getting fitted with the new Miss Earth crown tonight, but she will be up there with the other stand-outs alright.

ME Brazil Larissa Ramos

Larissa is earthiness personified. This exotic Brazilian lives up to the reputation of the country she represents. She is sexy, sensual and totally alluring. There’s a good chance that she will duplicate her compatriot Priscilla Meirelles’ efforts way back in 2004. Otherwise, making it to the Top 8 proves the consistently excellent track record of Brazil in Miss Earth.

My Top 18

ME Thailand Rujinan Phanseethum

Rujinan has the sweetest face in the pageant. She is a local favorite and I hope she works this advantage with the judges when it matters most. Her inclusion in the Top 15 in evening gown preliminaries is a plus factor.

ME Switzerland Graziella Rogers

Voted as Miss Congeniality by the ladies themselves, Graziella is the true epitome of being equally beautiful and genuinely friendly. She also made it to the Top 15 in swimsuit preliminaries that jacks up her chances.

ME Poland Izabela Wilczek

Every year, Poland sends candidates who almost always look alike (read: Polish women are very attractive) and Izabela joins that sorority of adorably beautiful women.

ME Hungary Korinna Kocsis

Young and sexy, Korinna wowed everyone during the swimsuit preliminaries. Her innocent and unaffected looks could score high on the judges’ tally sheet.

ME Colombia Alejandra Castillo Munera

This Latina continues the strong tradition of Colombia in Miss Earth. Although nobody has yet won from her country, she could pull the rug from right under the leaders’ noses and zoom to the top if lady luck is on her side.

ME Kosovo Elza Marku

Elza fixes herself up like Miss Kosovo-Universe Gona Dragusha (complete with the hair bun on top of her head) and although they look different, she could be priming herself up for the big time if her lucky stars align tonight.

ME Italy Luna Isabella Voce

Her name reads like a character in an Italian fairy tale and her classic face reminds me of Roman Goddesses of yester-centuries. The evening gown she wore in the preliminaries is knockout elegant. She is, I believe, my dark horse to win this year. That’s going out on a limb for me.

ME Turks & Caicos Alison Capron

Alison poses an easy attraction to anyone who meets her face-to-face. Turks & Caicos should be proud of how she represented them in Miss Earth 2009. And they would be even heaps prouder if she places well in the finals.

ME Mexico Natalia Quinones Perez de Jalisco

I have to be honest. I included Natalia in my list because she made it to the Top 15 in both swimsuit and evening gown preliminaries. She must have a mystifying presence only a personal encounter can provide.

ME Ukraine Karina Golovata

Ukrainian beauty queens almost always raise the bar when it comes to beauty of face and figure. Karina is no exception. Her fresh pop-idol looks (a good cross between Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne) should make it a relatively easy route to the semifinals.

It’s no easy task trimming down the 80 ladies to just the Top 18. Truth be told, there are still around 3-4 names (like ME Latvia Diana Kubasova, ME Peru Leticia Rivera, ME Northern Ireland Kayleigh O’Reilly and ME Jamaica Jenaae Jackson) I would like to include but that would go against the fearless prediction I had intended for this particular blog entry. In a competition like Miss Earth where a candidate’s intelligence and environmental-savvy is given high marks in the semifinals en route to the elemental Top 4, there is no telling if a front-runner can hold up her stead as the actual contest progresses. So we will really see the prettiest and the smartest in one package as reigning Miss Earth Karla Paula Henry crowns her successor tonight!

May the best woman win!

Miss Earth 2009 Best in Evening Gown winner

ME Philippines Sandra Seifert scored a double victory in the preliminaries of Miss Earth 2009. After clinching the Best in Swimsuit award last weekend at Fontana, she went on to score the highest in the long gown category and was named Best in Evening Gown as well. This makes her a shoo-in for the semifinals and possibly a spot in the elemental Top 4.

Here is a video of Sandra Seifert modeling her evening gown during the final preliminaries for the event.

Miss Earth 2009 Best in Swimsuit and Miss Fontana

The official candidates to Miss Earth 2009 buckled down to real pageant business when all 80 of them participated in the official swimsuit preliminaries held at the Fontana Leisure Estate. They wore identical red two-piece swimwears that highlighted their shapely bodies. At the end of the night, the winner of Best in Swimsuit was announced. Miss Philippines, Sandra Seifert, took the honors. Another candidate, Miss China Xu Yan, was picked as Miss Fontana.
