Mercegrace Raquel is back!
You saw Mercegrace A. Raquel last during Bb. Pilipinas Gold back in 2013. She was still this 19 year-old morena
from Licab, Nueva Ecija who made heads turn with her exotic vibe and statuesque height of 5’10”. She may not have placed during that very strong batch, but many pageant followers believed that she needs to return to the competition and mature even more at the right year. She certainly took the time out. A guest relations work at Solaire Resort and Casino kept her busy as a bee ever since.
Now at 22, Mercegrace could be looking at resurrecting her pageant dreams via Bb. Pilipinas 2016. This time, she is more determined, more polished and full of soul. And methinks she has more aces up her sleeve this time around. Do you think that she has what it takes to complete an unfinished business of becoming a Queen?
Watch out for the brand-new version of Mercegrace A. Raquel soon! :-)
A brand-new Mercegrace is on the way!
Numbers-wise, Kagandahang Flores is dominating Miss World Philippines 2013.
It just dawned on me that, compared to the single entry (Megan Young) of Aces & Queens, friendly rival Kagandahang Flores has fielded a grand total of fifteen (15) ladies for Miss World Philippines 2013. And they are as follows:
#5 Zahra Bianca Saldua
#6 Karla Patricia Alas
#7 Samantha Bernardo
#8 Frances Claire Vintola
#9 Pia Kamil Ochengco
#10 Janicel Lubina
#11 Mercegrace Raquel (do I see raised eyebrows?) ;-)
#12 Angelica Lopez
#13 Paula Estenzo
#14 Vina Openiano
#17 Aikah Dindah
#18 Omarie Linn osuna
#19 Bianca Paz
#24 Zandra Flores
#25 Melanie Barret
With these beauties alone, the competition is looking like a field day for the beauty camp of Rodgil Flores. Of course, given the huge percentage of their participation, the likelihood of getting a Top 5 placement is extremely high. At the same time, the mortality (or loss) rate will be higher since only a few (at most) can get to the highest tier come finals night. At any rate, the experience earned will definitely allow the non-placers the much-needed training and polish to help in their next pageant attempt/s.
The photo above also confirms that former Team JDV member Mercegrace Raquel has already hopped to her new ‘home’.
Okay, dear readers, who’s your Top 5 among the KF entries alone? ;-)
Below are the headshots of the 26 Miss World Philippines 2013 Official Candidates. One of them will take it all the way come August 18 and become our country’s representative to Miss World 2013 in Jakarta/Bali, Indonesia.
Who are your picks, based solely on these shots? Give me 12.
My Preferred (not Final) Twelve are: Megan Young, Zahra Saldua, Vina Openiano, Patricia Lae Ejercitado, Janicel Lubina, Ria Rabajante, Samantha Bernardo, Pia Kamil Ochengco, Bianca Paz, Zandra Flores, Mercegrace Raquel and Omarie Linn Osuna.
At this point, Megan is still my top pick. ;-)

I followed the tweets of Mercegrace Raquel (@mercegrace) during the final day (July 29) of Miss World Philippines 2013 screening. It was evident that she only decided to show up at Solaire Resort and Casino just before the closing of the extended deadline. She really had no solid intentions of joining this year. Otherwise, she would have attended the original dates of the first and second casting calls. Her heart was not into it, to sum it all up.
But now that MG has qualified, she should muster all the learnings acquired from Bb. Pilipinas 2013 and rise from that defeat to make her MWP journey more successful.
And yes, everything was unplanned. But the lovely lass from Nueva Ecija is just too happy that she did not change her mind and went with her gut. No regrets for the Team JDV bet!
How do you size up Mercegrace’s chances? Do you see her doing a lot better than Bb. Pilipinas Gold? Or will this be her last stab at pageant success? ;-)

Actually, I should have titled this post “The Ones I Fancy After
Megan Young” because that is how this batch is turning out to be. It’s like Megan against the 25. I know it sounds so premature but just basing it on how they presented themselves at Solaire Resort and Casino, the Aces & Queens bet is already pulling away like a thoroughbred leaving the other running horses struggling for mere
2nd place finish at best. I’m getting ahead of my objective, though.
The eleven remaining ladies in my initial shortlist are also stand-outs in their own way. Patricia Lae Ejercitado, Ria Rabajante and Zahra Saldua come closest imho, with Pia Kamil Ochengco and Nicole Marable shaping up as as this year’s possible spoilers. Ma. Paula Bianca may have re-packaged herself somewhat, but the nose knows that she might have a harder time pulling in a Top 5 spot unless someone intervenes. I like Vina Openiano enough to be cited as another fancied one. But with the way she handled her Mutya Q&A, I’m putting my reservations in check. Mercegrace Raquel is capable of doing slightly better than what she accomplished in BBP Gold, but that should be it so far. Samantha Bernardo and Jennyline Malpaya are still raw, but the potentials can be sighted. And Paula Estenzo being the tallest should mean something for Cory Quirino.
So where is Janicel Lubina in all of this? Well, she is in my Top 15 (along with Zandra Flores and Ma. Lily Salazar) if only I decided to share that much number.
My list will definitely get a shakedown still, but only from #2 to #12. ;-)

These ladies caught the red eye of MWP2013 final screenings. (Photo credit: OPMB Worldwide/Melvin Sia)
Yesterday, July 29, saw the arrival of many familiar faces who signed up and screened for Miss World Philippines’s final hurrah for candidates in this year’s edition. Makes me wonder why it took this long for most of them (save for those who just completed their Mutya ng Pilipinas stint last July 26) to actually show up and be counted.
Anyways, there is the very tall (5’11”) Paula Estenzo who is a relative newbie in our eyes. There is also Vina Openiano who failed to capture a top Mutya spot inspite of being a strong favorite. You can also check out Bb. Pilipinas Gold alumni Mercegrace Raquel and Zandra Flores (who also took part in Mutya), plus BBP2012’s youngest candidate – Nicole Marable. And then there’s Miss Bikini Philippines 2013 Janicel Lubina. The one who surprised me, though, is MWP2011 3rd Princess Bianca Paz who is taking the risky move of re-screening after already placing before.
So back to my original question. Why book the red eye of final screenings instead of taking part in last week’s more appropriate casting call at Solaire? Perhaps, it’s the more desirable impact? Or it could also be the fact that some of these beauties were tugged and convinced just in the nick of time to try their luck? Or is it because, as some kibitzers remarked, a sort of desperate move for the organizers to assemble an extra news-worthy group of contenders. However which way you look at it, Miss World Philippines 2013 is gearing up to become the most time-pressured national pageant our country has ever witnessed.
Good luck to all the joiners! ;-)
MG may have lost Bb. Pilipinas 2013, but she will still compete abroad.
After a disappointing non-placement in Bb. Pilipinas 2013, Mercegrace Raquel seemed headed back to her normal life. But since Team JDV’s John de la Vega is the go-to-guy in the Philippines of the organizers of Miss Humanity International, she found herself in the spotlight again. While the Barbados-based competition lacks the prestige and huge following of other international beauty pageants, it remains solidly on track going into its 3rd edition.
And so, Mercegrace will soon follow the footsteps of Czarina Gatbonton (2011) and Ayelee Marie Dasalla (2012) who represented the country in the same and wound up in the Top 5. She could be looking at finally nailing the crown, given MHI’s propensity for dark, exotic beauties.
Once all her traveling documents and wardrobe are in order, she should still have enough time to condition herself for the competition’s crucial dates – July 7-15, 2013.
Bridgetown, watch out for Mercegrace! :-)
