After months of preparation and weeks of pre-pageant activities, it all came down to this. Last night, Miss World Philippines 2011 was crowned in the person of GWENDOLYN RUAIS -a 22 year-old 5’11″ Filipina-French stunner – who will now be the country’s official representative to the Miss World 2011 to be held in London, England on November 6, 2011. She was crowned by Miss World 2010 Alexandria Mills during the end of a glittering pageant presentation that saw 25 ladies vie for the first-ever beauty title. With the victory, Ruais pocketed PhP1,000,000 in cash, a condo unit at Chateau Elysee plus the crown and scepter costing around half a million pesos.

Her court includes 1st Princess Helen Nicolette Henson (with Php250,000 cash prize), 2nd Princess Martha Chloe McCulley (with PhP200,000 cash prize), 3rd Princess Ma. Paula Bianca Paz (with PhP150,000 cash prize) and 4th Princess Jaysel Arrozal (with PhP 100,000 cash prize), all proclaimed during the finals held at Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) and aired over GMA-7.

It is interesting to note that all Top 5 ladies are products of previous Binibining Pilipinas editions in the last two years and the current. Also, both Gwendolyn and Helen Nicolette come from Jonas Gaffud’s Mercator Model Management which produced Miss Universe runners-up Shamcey Supsup and Venus Raj.

Miss World Philippines 2011: Tonight’s the night!

One lady will have her life changed tonight.

Miss World Philippines 2011 will be crowned during formal pageant ceremonies at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) and will earn the right to represent the country in Miss World 2011 to be held in London, UK on November 6. Since we’re more than halfway through September, the winner will be immediately whisked to more trainings, makeovers and fittings because she will definitely be flying to the contest site next month.

Among the 25 contenders, I have fearlessly trimmed down the list to what I term my “Pick 7 Ladies” – the ones who I feel are best fits for the mold of a Miss World candidate. They are, in this particular order of personal preference:

#13 Gwendoline Ruais

#24 Helen Nicolette Henson

#9 Martha Chloe McCully

#17 Erin Dolores Lane

#25 Erina Ann Lightholder

#1 Samantha Nerville Purvor

#12 Elaine Kay Moll

Obviously, my pick to win is Gwendoline Ruais. I simply love this statuesque Fil-French stunner. Gut feel tells me that she will rock the Miss World stage if ever. But close on her heels is Helen Nicolette Henson who will definitely give the former stiff competition. If not for a middling height, she could easily be a shoo-in for the top spot. Let’s see if one of these two ladies will nail the title tonight!

Reigning Miss World Alexandria Mills will crown the winner. The Board of Judges will include boxer Manny Pacquiao, actress Iza Calzado, Dr. Vicki Belo and Fashion Designer/Make-up Specialist Fanny Serrano.

Who’s your pick to win? ;-)

Miss World Philippines 2011 will air over GMA-7 tonight at 10pm after Protege’

The Miss World Philippines 2011 Talent Competition was recently conducted as a crucial pre-pageant activity of the competition. We all know that Miss World gives a high premium on the natural talents of the candidates – it being a fast-track event that rewards the winner a slot in the semifinals.

Watch the video above to see what talents the ladies displayed with the some of the candidates’ photos below.

Chloe and Nicolette take their chances in Miss World-Philippines 2011

Martha Chloe McCully

There’s nothing new about ladies joining and re-joining beauty contests. In fact, such attempts display their fierce determination to win and represent the country in international competitions. What makes joining Miss World-Philippines 2011 (MWP2011) a bit unique is the fact that the pageant’s franchise was just recently-booted from the roster of Binibining Pilipinas titles and previous joiners of the latter had to give up something (loyalty, for one) in the process.

Such is the case of two lovelies who have decided to jump ship and screen for MWP2011 last weekend.

Martha Chloe McCully was a favorite to figure out well in Binibining Pilipinas 2011. But such was not the case after the dust settled and the actual winners crowned. The former ABS-CBN talent (she was a member of Pilipinas Deal or No Deal’s 26K) thought better than to get stuck with the network and wait for next year or 2013 to try her luck in the same beauty contest.

And then there’s Helen Nicolette Henson who placed 2nd Runner-Up to Venus Raj in Binibining Pilipinas 2010. Having made it to the Top 5, she was asked to sign an 18-month contract with BPCI. And since there is an overlapping of dates between the expiration of the same and the scheduled screenings for Miss World Philippines 2011, she had no choice but to resign her post. Besides, she is more identified with GMA-7 (having co-hosted Party Pilipinas in the past) which has exclusivity to the new contest.

I don’t blame the two. They are both gorgeous and competitive. And since beauty queen wannabes have shorter expiration dates, they have to take advantage of the opportunity. Chloe just turned 24 (ceiling age for Miss World) and Nicolette will turn 23 later this year.

All I can say is….”Go, Girls!;-)

Dethroned Maria Venus Raj gets interviewed on ‘The Buzz’

If you watched ‘The Buzz’ yesterday afternoon, you would’ve seen the exclusive interview of Boy Abunda with dethroned Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2010 Maria Venus Raj. The show milked the issue to the fullest, taking advantage of the fact that its’ rival network (GMA-7) is identified with the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) and would not make a one-on-one so as not to displease the organizers. Anyways, for those who missed the interview, I am posting a transcript of the same (c/o ABS-CBN news), plus the video showing the full 10-minute spot on the show.

Dethroned beauty queen: I deserve the crown

MANILA, Philippines – Dethroned 2010 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Maria Venus Raj on Sunday vowed to question the decision of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) to strip her of her crown due to “inconsistencies” in her birth records.

During her live interview on “The Buzz,” an emotional Raj maintained that the officials of the BPCI knew from the very beginning the incorrect entries in her birth certificate, and that the inconsistencies were not her fault. She said she was transparent about her background during the screening of candidates.

The beauty queen from Camarines Sur said up until now she is clueless why she was stripped of her title. She said she is ready to fight for her crown.

Below is Raj’s full interview with “The Buzz” host Boy Abunda.

Boy: So, ipaglalaban mo ang korona mo?

Venus: Of course.

Boy: Kasi hindi na-mention ng Binibining Pilipinas Charities ‘yong sinabi mo ngayon na you were born out of wedlock.

I was born in Doha, Qatar but I was raised here in the Philippines. And then, may one-on-one interview, sinasabi ko rin po ito.

Sa isa ngang interview, sinabi sa akin nang nag-interview, ‘So what is is so special being born abroad?’ So, para sa akin wala pong problema at alam ko po from the very beginning alam po nila ito.

Boy: So, bakit nila ginagawang dahilan ito? Would you know why?

So, what’s the truth? That is one inconsistency. How do you explain that?

Boy: So, you have nothing to do with the inconsistency?

Venus: Exactly.

Boy: Were you aware of the inconsistency when you joined Bb Pilipinas na nakalagay doon sa birth certificate mo CamSur samantalang sa Doha ka pinanganak?

Venus: Yes, I am aware and I am telling them from the very beginning.

Boy: Didn’t you correct the inconsistency?

I’m hearing for the first time you were born out of wedlock. Bawal ba sa Bb Pilipinas rules?

Venus: I don’t know.

Venus: Totoo.

Boy: What about your father? He’s an Indian national.

Venus: Yes, he is.

Boy: Naiintindihan kita. My father was born out of wedlock. So, right now given where you are, ano ang mga gagawin mo?

You’re going to the courts of law para ilaban na you deserve the crown?

Venus: Yes. I know I deserve the crown at wala akong nakikita na dapat i-disqualify nila ako for that.

Boy: Venus, final words.

Boy: Do you still see your dad?

Boy: So, you have no contact with your father?

Venus: Wala po.

Boy: Pero wala kang kinakargang galit?

Venus. Wala po. Pasalamat po ako at buhay ako ngayon.

Boy: Go ahead. Talk to your mother, talk to your dad, talk to Bb Pilipinas Charities.

Kasi ang alam ko po I deserve what I got from the very beginning.

You totally question the decision?

Venus: Exactly.

Here’s my two-cents on the issue: I’m a stickler for rules, but not on a belated mode. If I were part of BPCI, I will not let matters reach this far (especially not after the winner has already been crowned) and would have utilized all resources to make sure that there won’t be any impediments (legal or otherwise) should a particular candidate win. It’s particularly irritating why ‘inconsistencies’ in Venus’ birth documents (which should have been meticulously verified during pre-pageant activities) have become the issue for her dethronement instead of having settled everything at the onset of preliminary or final screenings. The mere fact that she went on to win the crown without being disqualified prior to the coronation night indicates that she has been cleared. Now that her replacement (Helen Nicolette Henson) has been named, all Venus can fight for is to clear her name on the matter, but not the right to represent the country in the Miss Universe 2010 anymore. ‘Nuff said. ;-)

Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Maria Venus Raj dethroned; 2nd Runner-Up Helen Nicolette Henson takes over

Amidst my Holy Week reflection blogs, I need to make space for this item because it is big news in the local pageant scene. Recently-crowned Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Maria Venus Raj has been dethroned and will now be replaced by 2nd Runner-Up Helen Nicolette Henson. Whew! This is indeed a sad development, especially for the battalion of Venus fans and supporters around the country. Here is the official press statement of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) on the matter:

“Today, March 29, 2010, Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc., (BPCI) decided, with a heavy heart to let Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2010 Ma. Venus Raj go, after the organization discovered inconsistencies contained in her birth records, in contrast to her personal accounts of her birth.”

Maria Venus Raj: Bb. Pilipinas-Universe no more

Helen Nicolette Henson: the new Bb. Pilipinas-Universe

Don’t ask me why the 2nd Runner-Up became Venus’ replacement because I have no idea why. Suffice it to say that BPCI must have a perfectly good reason for making this decision. (P.S. Now I know the reason…it’s because 1st Runner-Up Dianne Necio is only 17 and Miss Universe contestants are required to be at least 18 years old by the time of the pageant.)

Time to move on. Nicolette may not be my personal bet for the title, but let’s support her nonetheless.

Bb. Pilipinas 2010: The crowning glories

Here are photos of the Binibining Pilipinas 2010 Coronation Night last Saturday, March 6. Of the three winners, one came out as a complete surprise (Czarina Catherine Gatbonton) while the two others (Maria Venus Raj and Krista Mae Kleiner) have been strong favorites ever since the candidates were announced early this year.

Krista Mae Kleiner, Bb. Pilipinas-International 2010

Dianne Necio, 1st Runner-Up

Helen Nicolette Henson, 2nd Runner-Up

Let’s see what’s in store for the Top 3 ladies this year. I am most optimistic with Krista Mae Kleiner because she is the perfect fit for the Miss International competition. As for Maria Venus, I hope that she breaks the drought of a placement in the Miss Universe because it has been more than a decade since the Philippines last did. And for Czarina Catherine, I wish her lots of luck. Miss World is very unpredictable so if Julia Morley takes a shine on her, then good for us. I hate to think that it will be another forgettable Miss World turn for our bet, but who knows? She might even surprise everyone if she has all the lucky stars aligned in her favor.

Congratulations again and best of luck! ;-)

Many thanks to Melvin Sia of OPMB Worldwide for the images above.
