Here are the nationwide screening schedules for Miss World Philippines 2012:

May 18 in SM Cagayan de Oro;
May 19 in SM Cebu;
May 27 in SM Naga;
June 1 at the SM Mall of Asia;
June 3 in SM Pampanga.

For inquiries, call Miss World Philippines Headquarters at Manila Hotel (this year’s Official Residence) at 527-0011 local 1248. Or visit their website for more details and application form.

Don’t miss the dates above. See if you have what it takes to follow the footsteps of the very first Miss World Philippines and Miss World 2011 First Princess Gwendoline Ruais.

The Miss World 2012 will be held in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China to be broadcast live via TV5 on August 16.

Let’s see which ladies will surprise us by joining MWP2012! ;-)

The Triumphant Three

All in one frame: (L-R) Shamcey Supsup, 2011 Miss Universe 3rd Runner-Up; Gwendoline Ruais, 2011 Miss World 1st Runner-Up; Venus Raj, 2010 Miss Universe 4th Runner-Up.

It is not very often that you can see all three beauties in one picture, so when they recently attended the wedding of Selena Antonio (a mutual friend who joined Bb. Pilipinas 2010) together with their mentor Jonas Gaffud, cameras started flashing to get Shamcey Supsup, Gwendoline Ruais and Venus Raj in one click – something that People Asia Magazine was unable to do.

Both Shamcey and Gwnedoline are largely responsible for catapulting the Philippines to runner-up to Venezuela as ‘Country of the Year‘ (courtesy of Global Beauties) in terms of pageant performance in 2011. Can that feat be duplicated this year?

I hope! ;-)

Is Elaine Kay Moll moving from MWP2011 to BBP2012?

If current plans bear fruition, Elaine Kay Moll could be the first alumna of Miss World Philippines 2011 to jump ship and transfer to Binibining Pilipinas 2012. She made it to the Top 12 semifinalists of the pageant won by now Miss World 2011 First Princess Gwendoline Ruais. And that placement could’ve been a good training ground and motivation for her to move on and seek better fortunes with BPCI. Why not? She is tall and with a pretty enough face that can be significantly improved with further polishing by her effective handlers. Besides, she is part of the camp that grooms the most successful Filipina beauty queens in recent years.

If and when she takes part in Binibining Pilipinas 2012, expect a more dramatic makeover for Elaine Kay Moll. She can always take full advantage of lessons learned from MWP2011. :-)

Gwen and Shamcey and People Asia magazine with Manny Pacquiao

The Holiday issue of People Asia Magazine should be of particular interest to pageant fans out there. Aside from Manny Pacquiao, the crown jewels of Philippine participation in the 2011 international beauty competitions grace the cover. 2011 Miss Universe 3rd Runner-Up Shamcey Supsup and 2011 Miss World First Princess Gwendoline Ruais join Manny, albeit shot in two separate covers instead of the two ladies together in one frame. Blame it on the fact that they belong to different groups – Shamcey with Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. and Gwendoline with Miss World Philippines/CQGQ Global Quest.

At any rate, Shamcey and Gwendoline still come from the same beauty camp – Aces & Queens – so don’t go thinking that they have a running feud or animosity. Let’s be happy that our ladies have brought honor to the country – keeping the Philippines within striking distance of being a sash factor in the global pageant arena.

Onwards to 2012 and, hopefully, an even better record for our next beauty queens!

The search for Miss World Philippines 2012 is on!

Gwendoline Ruais, Miss World 2011 First Runner-Up

Not to be outdone by the bigger Binibining Pilipinas Pageant, Miss World Philippines is jumping the gun on the former by opening the search for its 2012 winner. Cory Quirino is launching this early to get a better headstart, aside from Miss World 2012 being scheduled in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China for an earlier date around June or July. Next year’s edition will be tougher since Gwendoline Ruais was able to set the bar high after placing 1st Runner-Up in Miss World 2011. It sure is a tough act to follow, but the challenge should spur the beautiful Filipinas out there to give it their best shot.

So if you’re interested to take part in Miss World Philippines 2012, you can contact their secretariat at (02) 789-4789 ext. 7171 for more details.

Who knows? You might just be the next. ;-)

Gwen’s Parade

image

Late yesterday morning, the motorcade of Miss World 2011 First Princess Gwendoline Ruais was finally held after it was postponed earlier this week due to bad weather. From the GMA Network Center in EDSA all the way to the SM Mall of Asia, she gamely waved and acknowledged the cheers of fans, supporters and onlookers along the way. It took all of two hours before reaching the end point, but she never complained. Accompanying her atop the float were the Miss World Philippines runners-up Nicolette Henson, Chloe McCulley and Jaysel Arrozal.

It was a long and successful journey for Gwen in London and now that she is back home, she’s more than ready to face the next challenge before joining Miss World 2011 Ivian Sarcos and Julia Motley in their world tour come January.

Some showbiz engagements before that, perhaps? :-)

And our Miss World 2011 First Princess returns!

image

Gwendoline Ruais, Miss World 2011 First Princess, arrived in Manila fresh and triumphant from London where she achieved the highest placement of a Filipina in the contest since 1973. She was immediately whisked to a Presscon at Midas Hotel (photo above). A day after, she was lined up for several TV guestings with GMA-7 including an interview in Startalk where she detailed her wonderful memories of the pageant.

Today, she will be part of Party Pilipinas. Catch her production number together with Miss World Philippines Princesses Nicolette Henson, Chloe McCulley and Jaysel Arrozal.

Welcome back, Gwen! :-)

Quo vadis, Miss Philippines?

How well will Miss Philippines Earth Athena Mae Imperial deliver in Miss Earth 2011 to add up to the plus points earned by Shamcey, Gwendoline and Dianne?

Without a doubt, 2011 is the best-pageant-performing year of the Philippines since 1973*. Although we have not yet won a single grand slam pageant title this year, all three Filipina representatives to the Big 3 competitions placed. And considering the evolution of beauty contests into something tougher, extra complex and more rigorous, the performances of Gwendoline Ruais, Shamcey Supsup and Dianne Necio are nothing to be sneered at. In addition, the upcoming Miss Earth 2011 will most likely add some glitter despite the lack of faith in Athena Imperial’s ability to shine. The tilt will be hosted once more by the country so entering the Top 16 is almost always a given.

The question now is…Where does Miss Philippines go from here?

2011 is a tough act (or year, if you will) to follow. Exceeding – let alone duplicating – these feats is close to being an herculean task, but not totally impossible. So what should be done in order to sustain the continuity of stand-out records in the international stage?

My suggestions could be a repeat to the ears of some who have passionately contributed their two cents worth in the past several years. At any rate, I am reiterating the same because we are presently riding the wave of a very encouraging turn of events in the beauty pageant world.

1) This is the right time to encourage the dilly-dallying or hard-to-convince beautiful Filipinas within the last few years to join in next year’s Binibining Pilipinas or Miss World Philippines. Having seen the positive glory brought about by both Shamcey and Gwendoline might just spur them to give joining a try. There is always this inexplicable joy and pride in wearing the Philippine sash and representing the country to the best of one’s abilities and physical attributes. And I’m not even sounding off the female celebrities who are being thought of as beauty queen-worthy. There are hundreds of qualified ladies who can excel in the international level if given the right training, motivation and preparation.

2) Maximize all local resources in grooming our ladies for competition. Top of my head right now is to utilize Filipino designers (both amateurs and professionals) in designing and completing their wardrobe. From the national costume to cocktail dresses to casual wear to evening gowns, we have so many talented and creative minds who are available and more than willing to share their time in insuring that Miss Philippines effortlessly stands out abroad. A circle of fashion designers can be formed to do just this. As the saying goes, “two (or more) heads are better than one.”

3) Prepare them early. Majority of the Latin American countries select their representatives at least eight months or more before their actual fielding in Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth. This gives the winners longer periods to get ready, correct their weaknesses (and some ‘imperfections’) with time to spare (or properly heal if you will).

Having said the above, nothing beats enriching the psyche of our winners in bringing on their A-game to the max. Wanting to win the crown and give honor to the country just doesn’t completely cut it anymore. Take for example Shamcey Supsup. The girl did not go to Sao Paulo, Brazil armed with just the external complements to her already beautiful face and figure. Her background in academics helped in instilling top-level discipline and focus. She was not a mere learner, but a truly diligent one at that. She was never contented with going through the motions of mastering the art of pasarela or perfecting the ‘tsunami’ walk or choosing the right dress to wear in what function or activity. She lived, breathed and internalized the role of Miss Philippines-Universe like an award-winning actress who has the cameras following her 24/7. She played the part so well that hours after arriving in the host city, her star started to shine and got even brighter throughout the days and weeks leading to the finals.

And so I state this line again. Quo vadis, Miss Philippines? Hopefully to a path of continuous improvement, consistent performance and concrete discipline in fulfilling the demanding duties and responsibilities of a national beauty queen. :-)

* – The year 1973 saw the Philippines winning the Miss Universe crown (Margarita Moran), placing 1st Runner-up in Miss World (Evangeline Pascual) and 4th Runner-Up in Miss International (Maria Suarez Ojeda).
