Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2009 Bianca Manalo was recently feted by the local organizers to a homecoming press conference at the Gateway Mall. She may not have placed in the competition, but she did the country proud with her efforts of doing so. She became one of the favorites and was even highly regarded by many pageant enthusiasts around the world…well, that is, until the shutout of Asian candidates in the semifinals.

Manalo said, ” I am so blessed and honored to represent the more than 80 million filipinos in the most prestigious pageant in the world. There were lessons learned during my 3 weeks stay in Bahamas. I’ve found not only 83 new friends from different parts of the globe but also won the respect and admiration of filipinos who took their time to gave their supports during my campaign in the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant.”

The same press conference was graced with the presence of the two other reigning Binibining Pilipinas winners – Marie-Ann Umali (Bb. Pilipinas-World) and Melody Gersbach (Bb. Pilipinas-International) – who are next in line for competitions in South Africa and China, respectively. Mrs. Stella Marquez de Araneta, Chairperson of BPCI, was also around to welcome Bianca Manalo back.

If I am not mistaken, this is the first homecoming press conference hosted by BPCI for a non-winner so Bianca must have really done a great job in the Bahamas regardless of the outcome.

Welcome back, girl!

Thank you, Bianca!

As we close the chapter of Miss Universe 2009, let me take this blog opportunity to send my heartfelt thanks to our representative, Bianca Manalo.

Bianca may not have reached her objective in the Bahamas. But in the eyes of all Filipinos and supporters from other countries, she made all of us proud with her mesmerizing beauty, unstinting fighting spirit and total grace under pressure.

Bianca will always be remembered as the Filipina beauty who gave the Philippines reason to hope. I know that it was heart-breaking for her not to make the Top 15 at the very least, but all things being equal, she did an excellent job all around. Many external factors may not have gone to her favor and….on second thought, let’s not even go there so as not to spoil things up.

You should come home to the Philippines with head held high. We know how you tirelessly fought to reclaim some glory for your country and for that, Maraming, maraming salamat!

Mabuhay ka, Bianca!

One final smile from Bianca. We're proud of you, girl!

Post-Miss Universe Thoughts

The euphoria has died down.

A new Miss Universe has been named.

No use sourgraping over the results.

The drought for the Philippines continues, but I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to Bianca Manalo for giving her absolute best in representing us in the Bahamas.

There will be always next year to look forward to and other pageants to blog about.

Congratulations are in order for Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela for achieving the almost impossible – i.e., winning the Miss Universe title for her country back-to-back with her predecessor, Dayana Mendoza. If that is not enough, the 18 year-old multi-racial teenager from Merida gets the honor of being the first to wear the newly-designed and globally-chosen “Peace” crown.

Congratulations as well to Osmel Sousa (President of the Miss Venezuela Organization) who is definitely on Cloud 9 singing hallelujah. And I am honestly happy for him because he is reaping the rewards of his hard-earned efforts in bringing back Venezuelan beauties to the forefront of the international pageant arena, and in the process, producing the 6th Miss Universe crown for his country.

Osmel Sousa (President of Miss Venezuela Organization) is at the latest peak of his career.

At the end of the day, I’d sum up everything in these statements:

The business and politics of beauty pageants is not without its (many) flaws.

Gone are the years when the search for traditional beauty starts and ends in spreading peace and goodwill among nations.

Fierce is the word, and if fierce you are not, then you can only pray that lady luck stays on your side when the elusive crown is up for grabs once more. If you’re as fierce and as lucky as these Venezuelans, though, be proud and grateful while hoping that the winning streak lasts long.

Miss Universe 2009 is…

Newly-crowned Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez

Newly-crowned Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez

STEFANIA FERNANDEZ OF VENEZUELA!

Her victory makes Miss Universe history as she was crowned by her compatriot Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza, thus making the first back-to-back victory of one country in the pageant.

Her court of beauties:
1st Runner-Up is Ada Aimee Dela Cruz of Dominican Republic
2nd Runner-Up is Marigona Dragusha of Kosovo
3rd Runner-Up is Rachael Finch of Australia
4th Runner-Up is Mayra Matos of Puerto Rico

Congratulations, Stefania!

Bianca Manalo says “hi” to all from the Bahamas!

Isang tulog na lang! The Miss Universe Pageant 2009 will culminate tomorrow night, August 23, and will be aired live via satellite by ABS-CBN in the Philippines on Monday morning.

Here is a quick video of Miss Philippines Bianca Manalo saying ‘hi’ to all her supporters. This was taken at the lobby of the Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

One last look at Bianca (during the parade) before she battles it out for the Miss Universe Pageant…

HOT!!! Bianca Manalo parade videos from the Bahamas!

Since the finals of Miss Universe 2009 is just a couple of days away, let me share with you these fresh videos of Miss Philippines Bianca Manalo courtesy of our friends at OPMB Worldwide Forums. This was taken during the parade of all the candidates around Nassau. Her beauty remains remarkable here and her candid take on the other ladies is just cool! I love how she enjoys the company of her roommate (Miss Colombia) and differentiates her from the other Latinas. She is wearing her arrival outfit (very comfy for the sunny weather of the islands) and accessorized the same with some stylish necklaces.

She also paid tribute to the late former President Cory Aquino during the preliminary interview and did it with grace and sincerity.

Enjoy the video!

In this second video, you can see Bianca with the other delegates as they board the float for the parade. Still fresh and lovely despite the hectic schedules. Can you imagine these ladies surviving on less than 3 hours of sleep almost everyday? I cannot blame the others for looking tired and haggard.

What are Bianca’s Miss Universe chances?

Minutes before the preliminary interview, Bianca took the time to pose for a picture.

Minutes before the preliminary interview, Bianca took the time to pose for a picture.

Every year since 1999 when Miriam Quiambao placed 1st Runner-Up in the Miss Universe Pageant held in Trinidad & Tobago, Filipino pageant fans have been eagerly anticipating another respectable placement – if not a well-earned victory. In fact, the Philippines can take pride in having wins, near-wins and semifinal rankings every decade since the annual beauty contest started in the 50s. As a result, it is just normal to expect something wonderful from this year’s edition since it is a good 10 years since we last did.

But, honestly, what are Bianca Manalo’s chances in the competition? Before excitement gets the better of me, I would just like to point out that my optimism is not based solely on wishful thinking and the like. Feedbacks from friends who have saved money to make the trip to the Bahamas are not only encouraging but downright bright. Aside from being a hot favorite among the Bahamians to win the crown, Bianca has been consistently performing in all pre-pageant activities and racking up points to reach the Top 15. Her beautiful face and porcelain complexion is the talk of the town and not a few pageant pundits have chorused that this is the year that might end the drought.

I am keeping my fingers crossed – and tight. Bianca underwent preliminary interviews with the judges yesterday. A good friend was able to speak to her after the same (via overseas call) and our girl sounded very positive.

I am trying my best to set realistic expectations. At this point, all I’m hoping is for her name to be called as one of the Top 15 come Sunday’s finals night (Monday morning Manila time). From there, it will be Bianca’s game to turn on the charm full force and hopefully be rewarded with something that will make all Pinoys proud of her even more.
