Miss Universe 2011 is Leila Lopes of Angola!

Leila Lopes of Angola being crowned Miss Universe 2011 by last year's winner Ximena Navarrete.

The dust has settled a bit after Miss Angola LEILA LULIANA DA COSTA VIEIRA LOPES nailed a glorious achievement by winning the Miss Universe 2011 crown – the 60th in a long line of titleholders from the 1950s to the present. She surpassed the competition from 88 equally stunning ladies during the worldwide telecast of the biggest global pageant from Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

First Runner-Up is Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine. Second Runner-Up is Priscila Machado of Brazil, with 3rd Runner-Up honors going to Shamcey Supsup of the Philippines. Completing the Top 5 is 4th Runner-Up Zilin Luo of China. Heavy favorites from the USA and Venezuela reached the Top 16, but no further than that. The biggest shock, though, was the non-inclusion of ever-popular Miss Malaysia Deborah Henry in the quarterfinals. It must have come as a shock to her countrymen. And the surprise of the night, on the other hand, is Miss Portugal Laura Goncalvez making it to the Top 10. Hometown bet Priscila Machado made the Brazilians proud when she climbed all the way to 2nd Runner-Up.

Miss Universe 2011: My Final Top 15 Prediction

Clicking on the logo above will lead you straight to the livestream site for the finals

Much has been said about how hard it is to pick one winner from the tough field of 89 delegates vying for the Miss Universe 2011 crown. And I am one of them. But then again, the yearly celebration of the Most Beautiful Woman in the Universe will never pass without sharing my final list of Top 15 + 1 (Global Fan Vote) who are likely to be called on finals night which will be aired on Livestream and ABS-CBN and Star World in the Philippines.

I have reviewed the beauties not just once or twice. I already lost count of how many times I actually sat down in front of my laptop to look at all the photographs and to watch the countless videos made available for everyone around the world to see. I’m quite pleased at how the people in Sao Paulo and other pageant sites have made it easy to experience the whole thing for netizens without leaving home.

So without further ado, here is my final list of Top 15 for Miss Universe 2011 (by region this time around since this is rumored to be the method of announcement in tomorrow’s live finale’ plus that one lucky girl who just might clinch the global fan vote and become #16 on the list):

From Asia & Oceania

Miss China Zilin Luo has been getting a lion’s share of attention even before she landed in Sao Paulo. And the moment she started strutting her 6′ frame in the host city, everyone swarmed around this Oriental beauty. Talks abound that she is being groomed to win the crown. But with the constant lobbying of her pageant director, one preliminary judge – Alvaro Genaro – got the axe for meeting Miss China in person and even posing in pictures with her. Regardless, Roseline has unmistakable strengths to enter the semis on her own merits. And up to now, she is one of a few with practically guaranteed placements – be it Top 15 or higher. One nagging question, though. Why was her Evening Gown during Preliminaries so strikingly similar to that of Miss India?

Miss Malaysia Deborah Henry is her country’s most outstanding Miss Universe delegate after more than four decades of undistinguished participation. She went to Sao Paulo fully prepared for the competition – with the most stylish of wardrobes, the most regal of bearing and one of the most successful trainers in recent years, i.e., Ines Ligron. And boy, did she live up to all the pre-arrival hype. This beauty constantly wows whenever she steps into the spotlight. Her previous Miss World experience came into play as her web interview is probably the best this year. Too, she will never be caught off-guard, not especially in front of the cameras. Her performance during the preliminaries is a testament to all these.

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup is on the verge of approximating, if not exceeding, the Miss Universe performance of her predecessor – Venus Raj – who placed fifth in Las Vegas last year. From Day 1, she has been selected to attend several activities that were anything but mundane. The minute she flashed her ever-winsome smile (for Operation Smile), the Brazilians started warming up to her presence in a big way. She was one of 20 shortlisted for the media interviews and gained the adulation of Sao Paulo’s gay community after being named one of the 5 rampadoras at The Week’s special fashion show. During personal appearances, she is one of the most requested for photo ops. At this point, only her scores during the preliminaries (which she rocked, by the way) are in the way of making it to the Top 15. But all things being equal, she is rightfully deserving of a slot and I don’t think she will be ignored by the judges, sentimental nationalism aside.

From Africa
Miss Angola Leila Lopes is the only African delegate I am putting in the Top 15 this year. Owing to a smaller number (only 7) of representatives from the continent, the conspicuous absence of ladies from Namibia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Benin and Senegal weakened the selection even more. But I’m not putting in one just for token reasons. This tall, exotic beauty from Benguela is a stand-out stunner with balmy looks and delicate features that add up to winning qualities. She may not possess the bubbliest of personalities, but her presence is quietly divine and her personal style entrancing.

From Europe
Reeling off the Europeans in my Top 15 is Miss Albania Xhesika Berberi. This enigmatic-looking lady is the exact opposite of her predecessor, Angela Martini, who is the epitome of sexiness. But don’t let that fool you into thinking that she is a so-so performer. In fact, she is everything but a weak contestant…a silent killer actually. She doesn’t hoard attention, but the moment she does, her captivating aura enthralls and doesn’t let go.

Miss Greece Iliana Papageorgiou is the supermodel who invaded the Miss Universe ramp with more sophistication than consciously limelight-hugging elan. The first week saw her with limited visibility. But thereafter, she began electrifying all pre-pageant appearances with a chic head-turning disposition. All her official photos in the website are consistently dazzling. And she translated this to full effect during the preliminaries where she owned the stage and gave one of the most fluid movements that shouldn’t get lost on the judges’ score buttons.

It is not very often when famous national celebrities represent their countries in the Miss Universe Pageant. Miss Kosovo Aferdita Dreshaj is one of them. Already a star, she has more to lose if she doesn’t make a clear mark in the competition. It could just be me, but her collective pre-preliminaries performance in Sao Paulo is lackluster. She is probably feeling stilted due to her celebrity status or just ill at ease outshining the rest in every twist and turn. Nontheless, the race to Top 15 won’t be complete without her in the field. She takes to the spotlight like second skin and her precious minutes of fame during the preliminaries were never wasted.

Gifted with one of the most beautiful faces in the competition, Miss Netherlands Kelly Weekers has been one hot Miss Universe 2011 property right from the start. And this doll can never be called dumb in any aspect whatsoever. She is, in fact, very smart and intelligent the moment she opens her mouth, and with the help of her academic credentials, she continues to express a level-headed mind that goes beyond physical beauty and other superficialities. If she is fated to do an Angela Visser, then the Dutch people can all rejoice in wild abandon. She is a real underdog at this point, if you ask me.

Her country is a perennial favorite of pageant owner Donald Trump, but Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko is not about to rely on that to shine in the finals. Her fresh face, tempered sensuality and vibrant ways contribute to a remarkable package that will make her effortlessly shine in a field of 89 contenders. The preliminaries became a showcase of all the good stuff she is made of. I don’t know with you, my dear readers, but I’d feel a bit flustered if she fails to crack the quarterfinals. This girl is, quite simply, a knockout!

From North America (including Central America & the Caribbean for Miss Universe grouping purposes)
The Caribbean has always been a good source of excellent Miss Universe performers, but instead of the usual countries that we see moving up the ladder in the finals, Miss Bahamas Anastagia Pierre is the gem of the scattered islands in my opinion. Her magnetic smile and captivating looks will never go unnoticed. And during the preliminaries, she delivered on the goods (inspite of a marginally tacky gown). She may not be on the upper tier in my list, but she is deemed a solid part of the quarterfinal cast.

At first, I didn’t pay much notice of Miss Panama Sheldry Saez (probably due to her tired look during arrivals), but in two weeks’ time, she grew on me in leaps and bounds. One minute, she evokes femme-fatale all over and then elegant & good-looking goddess the next. In swimsuit, she is a certified bombshell and in evening gown, a fashion plate. The one and only time a Panamanian technically won the title was when Oxana Fedorova of Russia was dethroned in 2002 and 1st Runner-Up Justine Pasek took over. In Sheldry, I can definitely see her booking a quarterfinal slot and confidently rising to the top to the delight of her countrymen. If she moves an inch away from the crown and takes a firm grab, then her victory would sit well with me. Should that happen, then Panama should consider hosting Miss Universe in 2012 instead of 2013.

Sash factor or not, Miss USA Alyssa Campanella is another shoo-in to the Top 15. Her gorgeous face sets an excellent benchmark for all the wannabes in 2011. One source of worry, though, is how she dramatically lost weight the past two weeks. Perhaps due to the pressure of the contest, she must have been eating a lot less (feasting on just salad and water) and exercising more. And that won’t augur well in the finals should she formally claim her quarterfinal position. In swimsuit, she is model-thin and not in a very pleasant-looking way. She can easily ace any Q&A, but she needs to score big-time in the first two rounds in order to reach the last 4 who will be given a chance to speak their minds out.

From South America
Her country may not be the best-performing South American nation in Miss Universe history, but Miss Argentina Natalia Rodriguez could just be what the doctor ordered to regain a dose of supremacy in the pageant. She is endowed with one of the most classic faces that true-blue missosologists can attest to as both queenly and ravishing. I can see a potential winner in her. Now if she can only translate the external belief into an internal boost that will carry her through the rest of the finals, then the Land of Pampas may have reasons to celebrate on September 12.

To some, Miss Peru Natalie Vertiz is already a Latina overload as she is the representation of all the tried-and-tested features that make Spanish-speaking senoritas a cut above the rest, year in and year out. But coming to the defense of this statuesque mujer hermosa, I will add that she has the exquisitely-moderated oomph and sizzle that do not make you feel full. Her looks and moves are highly-refined. Care has been given so as not to play up her styling to the max. The blend is right. She displayed this during the preliminaries, especially during the Evening Gown round. And her inclusion in my Top 15 is but a fitting reward.

It is a rare year when an Osmel Sousa ward fails to make the first cut in a major beauty competition. 2011 will be one of the usual. Miss Venezuela Vanessa Goncalves can very easily outclass her predecessor Marelisa Gibson who was shut out of the Top 15 in 2010. No secrets at all about the major, major cosmetic surgeries to perfect her looks. No regrets there because the results are nothing short of amazing. And not to be outdone, her body was similarly ‘sculpted’ to excellent effect. In jest, some may quip that her abs look photo-shopped in the flesh. But that’s as far as how some people would seal their disbelief. This vivacious and voluptuous vixen wants to blow away the competition. Will she add another grand-slam crown to her country’s collection? Your guess is as good as mine.

And who will get the hotly-contested Global Fan Vote? Well, since the Philippines is already in my Top 15, I reckon that the 16th slot will be a close toss between two ladies who are neck-to-neck in this regard.

Miss Nicaragua Adriana Dorn (L) and Miss Dominican Republic Dalia Fernandez will face-off for the last slot. And with good reasons. Both ladies are breathing down each other’s neck in the Telemundo voting, so it is logical to think that they will just be as active in pursuing the position in the Miss Universe website. But beware! Miss Thailand Chanyasorn Sakornchan might just spring a surprise this late in the game.

Whew! This is such a lengthy blog to finish. I shall take a much-needed breather first. As for my choices for the winner (or Top 4 if you will), a separate entry is in the offing.

In the meantime, I would love to read your choices. Feel free to post a reply. :-)

Miss Universe 2011: My Favorite Evening Gown Shots

It’s hard to come up with just a Top 15 again so I decided to stop the count at 17. There are some very fabulous creations here but I also need to assess the way the candidate wore the same.

And so, here are my favorite Evening Gown shots for Miss Universe 2011 in alphabetical order, as photographed by Patrick Prather:

Miss Angola Leila Lopes

Miss Aruba Gillain Berry

Miss Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs

Miss China Zilin Luo

Miss France Laury Thilleman

Miss Greece Iliana Papageorgiou

Miss Haiti Anedie Azael

Miss Korea Jung So-ra

Miss Malaysia Deborah Henry

Miss Netherlands Kelly Weekers

Miss Panama Sheldry Saez

Miss Paraguay Alba Riquelme

Miss Peru Natalie Vertiz

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup

Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko

Miss USA Alyssa Campanella

Miss Venezuela Vanessa Goncalvez

I can go out on a limb here and pick my Best in Evening Gown because she is just ahead of the rest. My top choice is Miss Panama Sheldry Saez. If I had to pick 4 others for a Top 5, I will add Miss Greece Iliana Papageorgiou, Miss France Laury Thilleman, Miss Peru Natalie Vertiz and Miss Angola Leila Lopes.

Who are yours? :-)

Miss Universe 2011: My Favorite Swimsuit Shots

This is, without a doubt, the hardest part to armchair-judge. Majority of the ladies really brought their A-game when it comes to showcasing their voluptuous bodies. And for a very good reason. This is the favorite segment of the pageant’s complete demographics. And much as I had difficulty trimming the 89 down to just 17 favorites, here goes my list in alphabetical order…

Miss Albania Xhesika Berberi

Miss Aruba Gillain Berry

Miss Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs

Miss Chile Vanessa Ceruti

Miss China Zilin Luo

Miss Costa Rica Johanna Solano

Miss Denmark Sandra Amer

Miss Greece Iliana Papageorgiou

Miss Korea Jung So-ra

Miss Kosovo Aferdita Dreshaj

Miss Nicaragua Adriana Dorn

Miss Panama Sheldry Saez

Miss Paraguay Alba Riquelme

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup

Miss Spain Paula Guillo

Miss USA Alyssa Campanella

Miss Venezuela Vanessa Goncalvez

So who’s the shapeliest, the most sensuous and the most confident in her swimsuit? For me, it’s a triple toss among Kosovo’s Aferdita Dreshaj, Denmark’s Sandra Amer and Chile’s Vanessa Ceruti. But three more ladies are hot on their trails, namely, Panama’s Sheldry Saez, Venezuela’s Vanessa Goncalvez and Spain’s Paula Guillo. This portion is really a battle between the Latinas and the Europeans and my take is that the latter have an edge this time around.

Who are your choices? :-)

Miss Universe 2011: My Favorite Headshots

Viewing all 89 headshots of the Miss Universe 2011 delegates is not a daunting task. But to choose the outstanding ones can be. Much as I would like to limit my choices to just 15 favorites, I decided to add 5 more because this is such a competitive batch that it would do some of the girls injustice if I don’t recognize their excellent portrait pictures. Here now are my 20 picks for this first segment of official photographs from the lens of Patrick Prather, in alphabetical order:

Miss Angola Leila Lopes

Miss Aruba Gillain Berry

Miss Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs

Miss Bahamas Anastagia Pierre

Miss China Zilin Luo

Miss Costa Rica Johanna Solano

Miss Czech Republic Jitka Novackova

Miss Hungary Betta Lipcsei

Miss Israel Kim Edri

Miss Kosovo Aferdita Dreshaj

Miss Malaysia Deborah Henry

Miss Mexico Karin Ontiveros

Miss Netherlands Kelly Weekers

Miss Panama Sheldry Saez

Miss Peru Natalie Vertiz

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup

Miss Puerto Rico Viviana Ortiz

Miss Sweden Ronnia Fornstedt

Miss USA Alyssa Campanella

Miss Venezuela Vanessa Goncalvez

Now….if I had to choose my best 5 headshots…hmmm….I would short-list Miss Netherlands Kelly Weekers (doll-like sweetness), Miss Kosovo Aferdita Dreshaj (stylish chic), Miss Venezuela Vanessa Goncalvez (well-chiseled perfection), Miss Aruba Gillain Berry (dignified beauty) and Miss Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs (classic looks).

Who are yours? ;-)

Miss Universe 2011: Meet the Media

Miss Venezuela Vanessa Goncalvez posing for photographers during the Miss Universe 2011 media junket.

I don’t want to read too much into the selection, but twenty Miss Universe 2011 contenders were handpicked to attend the media junket which saw reporters and photographers from various press groups dishing out their questions and flash bulbs to the ladies who were only too willing to smile and oblige. Could they be the favorites of the locals or the preferred spokespersons of the organizers or a mix of both? Anyways, here are the 20 beauties who were present during the same.

Miss Angola Leila Lopes

Miss Argentina Natalia Rodriguez

Miss Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs

Miss Bahamas Anastagia Pierre

Miss Bolivia Olivia Pinheiro

Miss Brazil Priscila Machado

Miss Chile Vanessa Ceruti

Miss China Zilin Luo

Miss Colombia Catalina Robayo

Miss Universe 2011 Delegates from Asia-Oceania are not about to get sidelined by the flashy Latinas and doll-like Europeans. In fact, they are getting more than their fair share of attention and are slowly inching towards the shortlist of several locals. True that sensuality is always half-missing in their aura, but there is nothing that can’t be learned in just a few days of mixing with the more smoldering beauties.

Right now, I heard it from the grapevine that Miss China Luo Zilin is getting favored left and right in Sao Paulo. Some rumors are even talking about MUO (Miss Universe Organization) grooming her for a possible win. Of course, take these talks with a grain of salt. The competition has just started and just about every candidate wants to get hold of the Miss Universe crown.

And as for the country sashes above, is it just me or does the previous style – where the letters are stitched into the cloth sash – still look more attractive? Oh well… ;-)

Miss Universe 2011: Outshine! Outsmile! Outpose!

The word of the day is ‘out.’ With Miss Universe 2011 in full swing, the name of the game is to survive the onslaught of gorgeous national beauty queens from all over. And by that, I mean…OUTSHINE! OUTSMILE! OUTPOSE!

The images below are courtesy of Foto Arena and OPMB Worldwide.

Miss Brazil Priscila Machado may not be the most welcoming host delegate, but it cannot be denied that she is in it to win it!

Miss Finland Pia Pakarinen is coming out from the cold Finnish weather to add more heat to Miss Universe 2011.

Miss Mexico Karin Ontiveros does not look bothered that the reigning Miss Universe titleholder is her compatriot Ximena. She is zeroing in on a back-to-back victory.

Miss Nicaragua Adriana Dom is not about to take the competition sitting down. She wants to stand out and become her country's first Miss Universe.

Roommates or not, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup (L) and Miss Korea Jung So-ra won't have difficulty communicating with each other since the latter speaks fluent American English.

Miss Costa Rica Johanna Solano may look shorter than her reported height of 5'9" in person, but she remains to have one of the sweetest faces in the pageant.

Miss Ireland Aoife (pronounce 'ee-fah') Hannon is bringing the luck of the Irish that her predecessor Rozzana Purcell had last year.

Miss Dominican Republic Dalia Fernandez plans to use those soulful eyes to wow Sao Paulo from Day 1.

Just wait for Miss Panama Sheldry Saez to unpack her luggages before turning the heat on. She is one of the forces to reckon with in the pageant.

Miss Trinidad & Tobago Gabrielle Walcott is one of the oldest delegates at 27. But don't let the number fool you into thinking that she will serve as big sister to everyone.

Getting into the carnival spirit, Miss Paraguay Alba Riquelme (L) and Miss USA Alyssa Campanella are. Who's fiercer?

Miss China Luo Zilin is fast becoming a favorite in Sao Paulo. Don't ask me why just yet. She's very tall and a master of the runway, though.

Miss Universe 2011: These girls have landed!

Below are some of the 89 confirmed beauty queens who have already arrived in Sao Paulo, Brazil for Miss Universe 2011. More of the delegates are scheduled to land or have already landed as I am writing this post.

Miss Universe 2011 fever is really on!!! :-)

Alyssa Campanella is out to wow them Brazilians in Sao Paulo!

Miss USA 2011 Alyssa Campanella

Smiling or not, Alyssa remains to be a striking beauty!

When Alyssa Campanella won the title of Miss USA 2011, she realized the dream of nailing a national title. Curiously, she achieved this by representing California and not her beloved New Jersey. Regardless, the US has a very strong chance of clinching another Miss Universe crown after Brook Lee became the 7th victor back in 1997.

The green-eyed redhead who stands 5’8.5″ is a native of Manalapan, NJ. She was Miss Teen New Jersey 2007 and placed 1st Runner-Up in Miss Teen USA of the same year. Thereafter, she started a modelling career that saw her gliding the ramp in creations by Sherri Hill, Scala, Serendipity Prom, Mon Cheri Bridals, Sophia Tolli, James Clifford, Rina di Montella, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Tilly’s. What amuses me a bit is that she also posed for book covers of romance and thriller novels.

Shapely Alyssa has the catwalk-savvy that can make her a pasarela standout.

But back to the subject at hand, gut feel tells me that Alyssa is going to be one of the hot favorites for Miss Universe 2011. Aside from her gorgeous face, curvaceous figure and vibrant disposition, she can steal the show from the Latina Divas, Asian Hotties and Euro Babes with an inner personality that speaks of warmth and sincerity. If you ask me, she could be a great winner and perfect spokesperson for Donald Trump’s pageant.

I can already see Alyssa making heads turn in Sao Paulo. She may not have the exotic skin and dusky features of a girl from Ipanema, but she certainly makes up for it big time with all the winning attributes of a woman who just might become the most beautiful in the universe in less than two months from now.

Lots of luck, Alyssa! ;-)
