And the Philippine Volcanoes are at it again!

The Philippine Volcanoes in their new underwear ad for Bench Body

Their first underwear ads for Bench Body caused quite a controversial stir after the gigantic billboards (especially the ones at Guadalupe Bridge) were removed by MMDA Officials for provoking more than just the desire to buy a bikini/boxer brief or two. It did not dampen the team that recently topped the A5N (Asian Five Nations) Rugby Championships – the country’s first-ever win. As a result, Bench owner was inspired to schedule a new photoshoot for the boys. This time around, they were asked to wear more traditional – albeit less traditionally-designed – lower undergarments. And with a lot of black grease slapped on their muscular bodies at that.

Do you like the new concept? Well, I patronize Bench Body regardless so with or without this ad, it won’t matter. What I love, however, is the commitment of all the members to play for national pride despite majority of them being born and raised in other parts of the world. ;-)

The Cover Photo that almost never was

Isabelle Daza on the May 2012 cover of Rogue Magazine

The photoshoot was nearly stopped by the cover girl’s mother. As a result, the concept was adjusted to show less skin and more of graphic details. And just when everyone thought things were already fine, a rift between mother and daughter expectedly ensued to fuel more fire to the already brewing controversy (sort of). All in a few days’ worth of drama for the May 2012 issue of Rogue Magazine.

Isabelle Daza, daughter of 1969 Miss Universe Gloria Diaz, is yummily bedecked in white and splashed with blood in a Dexter-ish pose complete with a murderous butcher knife and a beauty queen’s crown to complete the pose. The end result sets a trend-setting cover that veered away from the usually edgy dolled-up sexiness men’s magazines are known for. And I love it! :-D

The challenges of being a Miss Philippines Earth candidate

The Environment Challenge…..check.

The Cooking Challenge…check

…a Pinoy Games Challenge? Mmmmm….

…and a Singing & Dancing Challenge? More Mmmmmm…

The title of today’s post is more literal than anything else.

I can understand the variety of pre-pageant activities for Miss Philippines Earth 2012. And if it has anything to do with the environment (or close to it), I don’t mind. An environment challenge is imperative so that’s a green light. A cooking challenge veers away a bit, but since food and the environment have correlation, I would green light as well. But a singing and dancing challenge? What’s the connection? Practicing for rain dance perhaps? And the Pinoy Games challenge. What’s it for again? Hope it was just for fun and not part of the judging for Miss Talent or Miss Camaraderie or something.

Am I being mean here? I think the organizers should have expanded the environmental challenges instead because it is a goldmine of tasks to perform. At the same time, it will further educate the candidates on the more important causes of the competition. A Mother Earth Quiz Bee would be proper, just as a skills test on how to recycle some materials into better use. It should not be something that would align with a particular sponsor-company, but the other way around. Okay, ’nuff said. ;-)

Grendel Alvarado for Miss Asia Pacific World 2012

Grendel Alvarado, Miss Philippines for Miss Asia Pacific World 2012

Grendel Alvarado missed the cut as Official Candidate of Bb. Pilipinas 2011 when she was already 25. She must have thought that it was her final opportunity to join a beauty pageant and represent the Philippines abroad.

The winner of the one and only Philippines’ Next Top Model reality search (in 2007), Grendel thought too soon. Now at the ripe age of 27, she has been appointed as the Philippine entry to the Miss Asia-Pacific World 2012 to be hosted not by one, not by two, but three countries altogether. Japan, South Korea and China will take turns in handling this year’s proceedings. Probably because of the controversies that surrounded last year’s edition in Seoul, the tri-country hosting should provide a more transparent check-and-balance of all activities in order to redeem the smeared reputation of Miss Aisa-Pacific World.

Let’s hope this year will more than make up for what happened in the past. Of course, it goes without saying that we should at least support our candidate in the same. Grendel will be leaving for South Korea on May 24.

Good luck, Grendel! :-)

Bb. Pilipinas Grand Santacruzan 2012

Want to see our Bb. Pilipinas 2012 winners in person? Then head over to the Araneta Center tomorrow afternoon at 4pm for the annual Grand Santacruzan where Janine Tugonon, Nicole Schmitz, Katrina Dimaranan, Elaine Kay Moll and Annalie Forbes will be traditionally dressed and paraded around the Smart Araneta Coliseum area as Reyna Elenas for everyone to see and cheer upon. I am also anticipating the participation of past beauty queens in the same.

So if you’re free, the invitation is open to the public. ;-)

Will Naimah Abdirazack be the face of Bb. Pilipinas 2013?

image

Mutya ng Magayon 2012 Naimah Abdirazack

Her name and face evoke the sights and sounds of Africa, but Naimah Abdirazack is Pinay na Pinay and she is the newly-proclaimed Mutya ng Magayon 2012. The half-Filipina, half-Somali beauty from Sorsogon was a clear standout during the finals of the regional pageant as she took the competition by storm and wowed all the judges en route to being crowned most beautiful in the whole of Bicolandia.

image

The next question begs. Will she be the face of Bb. Pilipinas 2013? You see, winners of Mutya ng Magayon always end up joining the national tilt. And with the right training and polishing from the right handlers, she will be a force to reckon with next year.

Ilocos sizzles with the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 winners

image

The Ilocos Region was graced with the presence of the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 winners during a trip sponsored by Philippine Airlines and the provincial governments of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. Janine Tugonon (BPU2012), Nicole Schmitz (BPI2012), Katrina Dimaranan (BPT2012), 1st Runner-Up Elaine Kay Moll and 2nd Runner-Up Annalie Forbes were all treated to the warm hospitality of the Ilocanos as they visited the key cities of Vigan and Laoag.

I hope it doesn’t stop here. Since their respective competitions abroad are still several months away, Philippine Airlines should bring them to other local destinations like Cebu, Davao, Bicol and the like as some sort of tourism pitch, as well as getting the ladies closer to their countrymen. Don’t you think so? :-)
