We all know that Bb. Pilipinas pillar and fashion industry institution Pitoy Moreno is now old and weak. But his creations live on.
During the national pageant’s fashion show at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the second part paid homage to the design genius of the one and only Jose “Pitoy” Moreno. The ladies, divided into five groups of 10, paraded various lines that he came up with during his more active years in the last decade. Some of the pieces may already show age, but it cannot be denied that he is one of those who knows best how to bring out the elegance in a Filipina. His ternos, in my opinion, are classic and timeless. And while his more modern outputs can be subject of potshots from the younger generation of fashion designers, you can’t help but be amazed (and amused) at how he is still able to reinvent himself through more than half a century of conservative fierceness.
It’s a pity the old man can no longer attend the event and witness his masterpieces come to life once more onstage. But his hand in the annual beauty competition that has produced – and is continuously producing – worthy symbols of world-class Filipina pulchritude will remain forever etched in the history of Bb. Pilipinas and the country’s pop culture.
Mabuhay ka, Pitoy Moreno!
